Otabek has had the Flowers a few times before, but they’ve never caught him off guard. Not until the first time JJ kisses him on the forehead. They stand there in each other’s arms for what seems like an eternity, and neither of them says anything. They don’t need to, not really.

(Otabek feels JJ’s shoulders tense beneath his hands, but when they separate JJ smiles at him like always, like nothing has happened at all.)

Isabella has only had the Flowers once, right before she confessed to JJ. They stopped when they got together, and she doesn’t see them again for two blissful years.

(Not until after the grand prix final, the night she watches JJ’s fingers drift too low, linger too long on Otabek’s back as he guides him to the dance floor.)

JJ has never had the Flowers. Not ever. And maybe he’s lucky that all he’s ever loved have loved him first, but sometimes he wonders what a broken heart feels like when it’s growing out of your lungs.
