I remember a much younger me, crumpled on the floor of my kitchen, weeping into a bottle of tequila, crying because I was afraid of being in love, afraid of how powerless it made me. The softness of my worn dress absorbed the tears, calves showing out of the edges as I crouched, leaning against the wall, so it would hold me up. I thought that if I drank enough tequila I could make the shudders stop, the terror of potential loss, the fear. The fear of being abandoned by someone I valued so much, or the fear of it ending, as all things do. Intimacy can be a death sentence, love can be death sentence. Love is not the survivalist’s field; it is not getting by: it is slow motion, and then suddenly the brakes are hit and you are slamming through the windshield.
