It is, perhaps falsely, seared into my mind that we were one of Constantin’s only playmates as a child. From what I remember, he wasn’t fond of the other aristocrats.

Who could blame him for being picky with his company? He’s always been sharp enough to know the score: any person who befriends him gains proximity to his father’s power. We had no use for that as his dear, sweet cousin.

That’s the thing about Constantin. He speaks like a naive damsel, but he’s never been one. The man understands politics, social hierarchies, and how to exploit both for his own ends. He learned all this at the knee of an unloving father, and he has chosen to use the world to fulfill his greatest fantasies with us, De Sardet.

Constantin creates situations where he is vulnerable (his later illness not withstanding). His childhood. The bar at the beginning. He makes himself into a person who needs rescuing, because he wants someone to swoop in and do just that. Constantin wants to be treated as something PRECIOUS. He wants to be coddled and told he’s worth the effort to keep safe separate of his parentage.

De Sardet fills that role.

We save him time and time again by his own design, and so the final choice isn’t a surprise. Really. It’s not, not if you really think about it.

Constantin finds a way to preserve his life, but he doesn’t find value in it if you aren’t by his side like a knight in shining armor. He wants to continue the cycle of you protecting him from the consequences of his own actions, so he arranges a situation where you HAVE to choose him or kill him. If you choose him, you save him from the world that wants him dead and mold it into a playground to both your liking. If you kill him, then Constantin doesn’t have to live in a world where you forsake him. He dies at the hands of the person he loves most without the agony of living the rest of his life unloved.

If you aren’t going to treat him like the most important treasure in the world then Constantin would rather be dead. The power of a god is meaningless to him if he can’t have you.

I hate this man. I love him. I want to protect him as he hopes I will. I want to stab him for being so selfish and putting us in this situation to begin with.

Greeedfall of the only game I could never complete due to the agony of the final choice, and it’s all because of Constantin D’Orsay.

This game kept me up until 4:30 AM on a workday and left me ugly crying for a solid 10 minutes in front of my TV, 100% sober, because of this adorable frog uncle man

I may never emotionally recover and now I feel like I should stock up on tissues for the rest of the game
