On the Recent Press Release About Me
It appears that an individual working at a firm professionally representing me on some fronts had a few facts about me wrong. Some of the claims this person included in a package meant to promote my writing that was recently sent without my knowing to a news agency and wound up being published by several outlets are simply misleading.
I am not at all invested in the Democratic Party. Its leading self-described âdemocratic socialistâ figures- Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Cynthia Nixon, and the like- are nothing more than welfare capitalist gatekeepers that work to keep people with revolutionary potential from discovering the blueprint to actual democratic socialism.
Nor do I have any meaningful interest in the 2020 United States presidential election or any other contests between bourgeois/capitalist political parties. And before anyone asks, I do not believe that any of these parties can or should be reformed into genuine democratic socialist parties. We democratic socialists must form genuinely and explicitly democratic socialist political parties of our own. Entryism isnât, never has been, and never will be, the way to go.
And unlike the author of the package in question might have you believe, I donât speak of the lands under the control of the United States government collectively as âthe countryâ or see myself as an âAmericanâ. I am a Southerner. As the usage of my home as an environmental standard race to the bottom and labor devaluation tool and the gentrification and cosmopolitan bourgeois commodification of its cities and many of its rural landscapes, along with the countless other contemporary âdomesticâ atrocities of national non-self determination, among them the management of the Hurricane Maria Crisis in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands âof the United Statesâ and the continuing expansion of the US Department of Defenseâs presence on Guam, demonstrates, this âcountryâ that is spoken of is a prison of nations under the whip of a bloc of capital that locally legitimizes its rule with its âAmericanâ state. As a left-wing nationalist and proletarian internationalist, I canât play along with the lingo it uses.
Just clearing that all up.

All Ideology Is Religion
The traditional and prevailing popular and academic definitions of religion are products of awful taxonomy and deep confusion that work to keep people with revolutionary potential who see themselves as âreligiousâ and people with revolutionary potential who presently see themselves as ânon-religiousâ from developing full class consciousness and coming together to overthrow the forces of capital. If we democratic socialists wish to build a movement capable of realizing universal government by an informed, class-conscious global working class, we must realize how flawed these definitions are and take them on with vigor.
All of the traditional and prevailing popular and academic definitions of religion are very narrow. They fail to recognize the commonality between the things they acknowledge to be religion and the belief in the non-scientific and non-rational they do not acknowledge to be religion- among this belief, âsecularâ morality their users and upholders, lay, clerical, monastic, and academic, almost never even first acknowledge to be non-scientific and non-rational. The popular definitions include only belief in the non-scientific and non-rational and ritual mandated by the non-scientific and non-rational that has traditionally been described as âorganized religionâ and belief in the non-scientific and non-rational and practice of ritual mandated by the non-scientific and non-rational directly derived from such âorganized religionâ and believed in and practiced by individuals who do not belong to or strongly associate themselves with any âorganized religiousâ institutions, while the academic definitions only include this belief and ritual historically mandated by what was historically seen as the non-scientific, non-rational, or âsupernaturalâ, but which is now seen by those who practice it as mere post-religious âtraditionâ or âcultureâ (what is now seen as âmundaneâ and may in fact be seen as fully devoid of any inherent moral value in itself, even on a âsecularâ level, as merely having âfunâ or âcomfortingâ effects that are morally positive in a âsecularâ sense on those who practice it), and âspiritualityâ or âmysticismâ.
Itâs amazing that these definitions have stood until this day. If we seriously consider Humeâs guillotine- that is, the acknowledgment, first articulated by David Hume in his A Treatise of Human Nature, that oughts are not conventional isâs, we quickly come to understand that belief in the existence of non-theistic moral truths, belief in the existence of moral laws of the universe not created by any deity, is belief in things which are non-physical and inherently non-empirically observable, non-scientific, and non-rational- belief in moral prescriptions not at all unlike those traditionally described as âreligiousâ .
When we categorize things, we must organize concentric circles- we must put all categories of things similar in any ways into larger categories. We must recognize all things that are non-scientific and non-rational to be non-scientific and non-rational and be able to put them together into one box. Yes, âsecularâ ideology is moral essentialism. Yes, simple belief on the part of non-theists and non-personal theists in right and wrong is belief in the existence of non-scientific natural facts all the same. Yes, even though they are not thought to be the creations of a creator God by the non-theists that hold them dear, âsecular moralâ truths are not scientific rational truths- they are inherently non-empirically observable, non-scientific, non-rational truths-religious truths!
The common people of the world need to be awoken to the fact that virtually all people believe in the existence of non-empirically observable, non-scientific, non-rational facts, that virtually all people are moral essentialists. They must be brought to see that antagonism on the part of those people with revolutionary potential who deem themselves âreligiousâ towards people with revolutionary potential who donât on the simple ground that those who donât are ânihilistâ or âamoralâ is misguided and pointless. And similarly, they must be brought to see that antagonism on the part of those people with revolutionary potential who are religious but do presently do not see themselves as âreligiousâ towards those who do on the simple ground that they are not âfree thinkersâ or âbelievers in the non-scientific and non-rationalâ is misguided and pointless.
Those traditionally defined as âreligiousâ must no longer be censured by those not for their simply believing the moral truths of the universe to be of divine origin, and both the self-aware âreligiousâ and people traditionally defined as ânon-religiousâ need to be awoken to the fact that those they have not considered religious believe in the existence of non-scientific and non-rational moral facts all the same.
Whether people consider the principles they believe in to be divinely-created or not is not is never the problem. Whether they simply believe in âfairy talesâ or indulge in âwoo wooâ, if some of us choose to look at religious lore and âspiritualityâ as such, is never the problem, either. Whether their principles clash with the principles of democratic socialism, the morally prescriptive facts of democratic socialism, and whether their religious lore or âspiritualityâ somehow motivates them to challenge or point away from the principles of democratic socialism, is. Do any of the things someone believes to be the moral facts of the universe point away from the moral facts of the universe? Does any of the religious lore they may believe in and the âspiritualityâ they may indulge in, motivate them to challenge or point away from these moral facts? That is the real litmus test. As long as something is not getting in the way of good prescriptive religion, it must be tolerated.
And, yes, we democratic socialists must fully realize that our belief in the principles of democratic socialism is religion.
And so, in closing, I put forward this definition of religion.
â Religion is belief in the existence of anything which is ânon-rationalâ and cannot be scientifically observed or investigated- anything which is âsupernaturalâ, anything which is âhiddenâ or only ephemerally observable and cannot be objectively/scientifically established to exist/existed/have taken place, or anything which by definition is not objectively/scientifically observable- from belief in the existence of a god or gods, to belief in an afterlife, to belief in spirits, spells, or curses, to belief in the existence of divinely-created or non-divinely created moral truths. A religious belief is a belief in the existence of a specific thing which is âsupernaturalâ, âhiddenâ or only ephemerally observable and cannot be rationally or objectively/scientifically established to exist/existed/have taken place, or by definition non-rational and not objectively/scientifically observable.
Any collection of beliefs in âsupernaturalâ things, things âhiddenâ or only ephemerally observable and cannot be objectively/scientifically established to exist/existed/have taken place, any system of metaphysics, or any ideology or moral/ethical system, whether or not it is non-theistic- (that is, any collection of oughts), is a religion. Any worldview that is not nihilistic/amoral is a religion. So is any nihilistic/amoral worldview that is also theistic or holds that anything âsupernaturalâ exists. Some religions are the creations of and only held by singular individuals.
One can follow multiple religions. Someone can, for example, be a Vatican II Roman Catholic, anti-nationalist internationalist, and moderate animal welfarist with no general qualms with the consumption of animal products. Another person can believe no deity to exist, be a nationalist of their ethnic group, state capitalist, and universally anti-animal product vegan animal welfare activist.
Yes, not all religion is ideology, but any and all ideology is indeed religion. Yes, even the simple holding of the neurological phenomena of raw pain, pleasure, and love to be the possessors of moral value is religion. To believe in the existence of moral truths is to believe in the existence of things which cannot be proven to exist through rationality or science. One cannot establish the existence of moral good and evil through rationality and science. One can use rationality and science to help answer some moral questions after he or she has accepted the existence of good and evil, but he or she cannot use rationality and science to establish the very existence of good and evil- the concepts of which belief in form a non-rational foundation that every moral system is built upon. Non-rational and non-scientific presuppositions are accepted before the scientific and rational go to work in any religious/ideological system.â

When We Ruminate Upon the Simulation Question, We Waste Our Time
I am infuriated by the fact that millions of very bright âsecularâ people continue to spend significant amounts of time brooding over the question of whether the reality we live in is the âoriginal/naturalâ reality or some sort of computer simulation constructed in it or a pre-existing simulated reality.
There is absolutely no way of scientifically or rationally knowing whether we are or whether we are not living in a computer simulation. There never was. There never will be. This is an âisâ that will forever remain scientifically invisible to us. No ârationalâ or âscientificâ inquiry into the matter can be anything more than mysticism.
Scientific laws, whether known to exist or yet to be discovered that some reference to or plan to reference to prove that we are not living in a computer simulation could simply be scientific laws particular to a specific computer simulation- the inability to construct a comprehensive reality simulation could simply be something scripted into a simulation.
And just as we canât just look at patterns in the universe and scientifically or rationally know that theyâre all proof of the hand of some ânaturalâ god, we cannot look at patterns in the universe and scientifically or rationally know that they are proof of the hand of some programmer.
For that matter, if we were indeed subjects in a computer simulation, we would be the moral equivalents of intelligent beings of our exact sort, wholly incapable of knowing whether they are or are not ârealâ, not living in a computer simulation. Our experience would be identical to theirs. Either way, we are genuinely sentient beings, not video game characters without consciousness and feelings. Either way, we genuinely hate and love. Either way, we commit acts of genuine good and evil. The absolute universal moral truths most of us believe to exist are, yes, absolute and universal- they apply in the ârealâ reality and all simulated realities that may exist. Whether we are made of actual flesh or are âinorganicâ material not aware of its being âinorganicâ material, or whether we are living in the ânaturalâ reality or a computer reality is not something that matters at this point.
Am I saying that there is anything wrong with people having absolute positions of faith on this front that may or may not be backed up by intricate mystical thinking? No, so long as those who hold these positions acknowledge that these positions are religious âisâ (as opposed to âoughtâ) positions that cannot be supported by science and rationality, and so long as these positions never  reduce them to jaded emotional mush or shut them off from participation in political struggle.
Those who are wasting time on or, God forbid, losing sleep over this matter, just need to consider the points I laid out here and move on with their lives. We have real work to do. We must remember that distractions like this one are deliberately pushed to the fore- we must never forget that the forces of capital love anything that intellectually distracts or inspires lassitude in those they oppress and who, if they were inspired, confident, and fully conscious of their oppressorsâ schemes, might meaningfully organize into a revolutionary democratic movement and stand a chance of removing them from power. Let us tackle the actual problem at hand and stop getting hung up on uselessly distracting things like the simulation question.
