Tribute to #MichaelJordan @jumpman23 for #TheLastDance @espn and the connection to my career with many of the best sports brands in history. We started in the industry together when the Jordan 1 hit the market in 1985 and I was an entry level Tech Rep @newbalance. I was a senior exec with @nike during the second #Chicago 3-peat 1996-98 then was sitting right next to Jordan as the Head of Sales @oakley in the boardroom in 1999 discussing footwear & one of the biggest sports feuds of all time. MJ was on the board @oakley and the face of the #xmetal eyewear line while being the number one shoe salesman @Nike. As an owner/partner of @converse in 2001-4 we used images of MJ at #UNC and the @usabasketball Olympic team to remind everyone where it all started wearing the @juliuserving #ProLeather. The Coronado Bridge is symbolic to San Diego which is my favorite city in the world. It has a few different meanings to me. I love to drive over this bridge admiring the spectacular scenery captured here by my good friend @jtdutraphoto. I cross the bridge often to visit our stores inside the Navy bases or to see my great friend Coach Eli. In college I watched a show called Simon and Simon that featured driving over this bridge and it made me long to live in SD someday. After finishing graduate school we moved to SD to stay forever but life has a way of changing the plans. Matter of fact I’ve moved to SD five different times because of great career opportunities (New Balance, LA Gear, Nike, Oakley, Converse) in the sports business always pulled me away. When we started our own sports brand called Cali Strong there was only one choice, San Diego, a city that just might be the most active place in the world. The bridge has another dark meaning that is more difficult to grasp. Many people know that one of my favorite things in life is being a mentor and friend to many superstars in business. They think I’m always there to guide and inspire them but what they don’t realize is that I need them more than they need me. Life is not easy but God, family and friends keep everything in perspective. Every time I cross the Coronado Bridge it’s time to contemplate life and choose to focus on the positives in a negative world. Be grateful for everything life provides. Moments like this make all the effort worthwhile. I have been honored to be teammates with many great people in the sports industry including 31-year veteran Oakley legend Scott Eilertson. He and his wife returned after experiencing the @calistrongusa retail-tainment store earlier and I happened to be there so we had to make a video and showcase his football skills for a free hat. We haven’t seen each in 15 years but when you’re brothers it seems like yesterday. I’m so proud of this young man for what he stands for on and off the playing field. Life is full of blessings when we stop and pay attention. These moments make us grateful for amazing memories and excited for future challenges. Most of all it makes me very happy!
