I keep seeing the comments about it but if it turns out he really doesnt know sign language, it seems clear at this point that the reason is because he didnt want to learn it before. Like idk why that seems so strange? Yes, he wanted to protect her from a possibly abusive marriage; yes, he liked being around her, liked her as a person enough to care for her safety, etc.
But I feel like it's also clear my guy fully intended this to be marriage in name only. He didnt want to be close to her, he didnt want her to have feelings for him, he didnt want he himself to get attached to her, he had no intentions of even pretending to be a couple, he doesnt want to reveal any of his thoughts and feelings to her. Of course, he's not going to learn sign language when he never intended to speak with her in the first place.
In a lot of ways he is - or was - like her mom. He wanted her just to stay quietly and prettily in his house, do what he said and not make any trouble. He didnt treat her as a person so much so as a comfort blanket he wanted to keep because it made him feel better. And maybe that's the point. That we see him changing now as the plot of the story progresses. He starts seeing her for real, feels shaken when he realises that she has thoughts and feelings and wants and ideas independent of him of her mother, that she's not just a puppet on strings but an actual real human being that feels for him what he feels for her?
And to me that's what will make the scene where he finally wants to learn sign language much more impactful. Like he said in his speech during the interview - what if the couple had been able to communicate better? What if they had been more open with each other? What if they had made the effort to work things out? Would things have been different then? So he's starting to make the effort, starting to communicate with her and have her communicate with him.
