Paddle on Juniper Run. Gorgeous trip, a bit warm. The water is always cool. In deep canopy it feels like air conditioning. Saw Anhinga, many Aligators and Smooth Azalea. Always a treat.

Suwannee River

Saying the Suwannee is magical seems a bit silly. For a lot of years I tried to explain this system. Took a lot of people on trips down the river. This painting belongs to John and Sally Ragsdale, and I am so glad they own it.

Alapaha Rise

This is a painting I made more than ten years ago. It is about a spot on the Suwannee River a few yards up river from the highway 249 bridge. The first time I found this place was on a paddling trip with Allison Watson. We followed significant flow into a rock wall off the river. Black water was pumping from a near perfect half circle rock hole. Limestone walls towered at least a dozen feet over our heads. Sunlight drifted through the oaks and bounced off the water surface. Ripples of light danced on the white rock walls.

The Alapaha River cuts a 200 mile long trail through southern Georgia before it joins the Suwannee. It’s journey twists and turns. The tea colored water travels on the surface for a ways then drops underground here and there. Depending on rains the river bed at the confluence varies from a slight trickle to a creek a few feet deep. The bulk of the river’s water flows from this rise.
