When I shared this post on Jikook’s connection with Please, A LOT was still yet to happen. I put a little bit of everything in there so if you’re interested and are not aware of THE band aids lore from 2016 I suggest you read it before you continue.
When I posted it, Jikook had already given signs of being particularly into the song, especially Jimin, dare to say mainly him, but nothing more. A few glances. But, of course, we could already sense that something about this song got Jungkook too and that, overall, Please was their song already.
In the name of that I wrote the post and digressed a lot but genuinely never expected Please to become this obviously meaningful for Jikook.
And allow me to say, allow me to say what I always say, which is
Out of ALL songs. ALL of them.
Jikook chose the one about staying together, being down for this bond even through hell and on the worst days, because all you want is each other, to please each other, to be together.
I asked myself why it still shocks me. Why I still feel surprised and so emotional when Jikook give signs of relating to something romantic or of identifying their bond with romantic gestures and lyrics. But now that I think about that post, I remember mentioning the origins of “I Am You, You Are Me”, and of course the matching band aids in 2016 and bla bla bla.
And I get why it touches me, still.
It’s because there’s a thread. A long one. And it has been going on for ages. For years. It’s that consistency, that commitment, that passion that makes me emotional. Because if I think of all the songs Jikook have shared that were probably for each other, and of all the tiny little times throughout the years that they’ve looked at each other and said “I Am You, You Are Me”, and if I think of how they wore those band aids, 10 years ago, and of how still to this day they’re looking at each other and saying “stay with me on my worst day”, well… that long thread becomes a huge love letter. A testament. That we witness in tiny little parts, and that started with small gestures, with lyrics, plasters and shyness.
Don’t know how many of you are aware, but recently I started posting Jikook moments going back to Jimin’s crush era, that I refer to as such because it was his crush the most obvious and expressed one. And I shared this moment of Jimin dancing for Jungkook. At the end of the video you also see a phone case, Jimin’s phone case, which Jungkook had written all over.
This helps me with explaining two points I made above. The first one being on how “Jimin’s crush era” was actually Jikook’s crush era, because someone drawing hearts all over your phone case and your name is definitely on cloud nine, and the second one being on how Jikook’s love makes us all emotional because it lays on a 10+ years long thread of joy, childishness, and challenges.
One of the most common arguments when you put such evidence in front of people it’s “well, they probably dated but broke up and stayed good friends”. I’m not here - and I’ll never be - to prove anything to anyone about anything let alone two people’s relationship that’s not explicitly confirmed for me neither; but I must say those arguments are senseless.
Because it’s so obvious how these were explicit signs of crushing, of feelings, of tender love blossoming- and I’m not just referring to the phone case, I’m talking about all of it. All of it was coherent with the age and time and context Jikook were at, and to assume that all of this, at one point, disappeared, just because it changed its form, it’s something I don’t agree with.
Jimin and Jungkook are still the same guys who did that. Who wore those band aids in 2016 - Jungkook is the same guy who listened to Zico’s song saying “all night long we kiss each other and together, all shabbily, we wake up in the morning: suddenly you’re seriously so pretty” and thought of Jimin.
They’re the same guys who teased each other in such a childish way, who drew hearts all over the other’s phone case and hugged the other screaming “please come on a date with me! Stay with me forever! Hold my hand!”.
Do we really believe they either grew out of it - while keeping to flirt, travel, share hotel rooms - or that they tried it out and then called it off? To assume that it means that people are either blind, unaware of all the signs Jikook give that are not less important or loud than they were back in 2014, or that people think relationships don’t evolve, and that in order to be something - or for us to keep assuming they’re something - Jikook should still be covering each other’s names with hearts, or screaming “date me and kiss me and accept my love” forever.
They still do it. They still do all of that. Just in different ways, shapes, colors. Because that initial phase of yearning, and confusion, and push and pull, and testing the waters, and diving in the waters HEAD FIRST while hiding it to the world, is gone. They’re more stable now.
But this is not what I wanted to say. It was an uncontrollable digression. All I came here for was to praise Jikook’s bond with the song Please, to remind you all of how special it is that out of ALL songs and lyrics Jikook relate to this one for themselves, once again with a romantic and committed meaning behind.
And I guess I just wanted to share how emotional it makes me to imagine Jungkook drawing hearts on an object that belonged to Jimin, all over it, and all around his name. Like we used to do on pieces of paper or diaries when we had a crush on someone. With kissing faces, smiley faces, little hearts, heart eyes, smaller and bigger hearts, a cute “sis” with another heart.
And “little did we know” refers to us all, because we definitely had no idea how serious their connection with Please was gonna become and how often they were gonna show it, and we had no idea how deep and meaningful in general Jikook’s bond was gonna get; and I’d like to say that Jikook are included too, that they had no idea either, but I think it wouldn’t be correct.
Because if you fight so much and endure so much to keep a relationship alive, whatever its nature is, especially when people fight against it instead, becoming reliance, support, presence and care for each other, then you must know there is something that could last that’s worth it all.
I don’t know if they ever imagined it getting so big and profound, but Jungkook did write “love” on that phone case, on the right corner at the bottom. With a tiny heart next to it. So maybe he wished for it, or maybe, just maybe, he did know that Jimin guy was eventually meant to stay.
