jiara week day 5 - based on a book/movie/tv show

Summary: Short on options, Kiara moves in with three single guys. [aka the New Girl AU]

Kiara isn’t quite sure what she expected when she spur of the moment decided to move in with three single guys she'd never met. She figured they’d probably keep to themselves and that she wouldn’t have much in common with them. At least one was probably a slob and there would be a constant parade of girls in and out of the apartment. She'd have to use her meagre savings to buy noise cancelling headphones or she'd get stuck doing all the cleaning just because she was a girl. 

To be honest, she was fifty-fifty on the whole thing working out at all, but she was desperate.

Strangely enough though, she fits in perfectly. Between the practical jokes and the late night beers, the ridiculous made up games and random road trips in the communal beat up VW van dubbed the Twinkie for reasons she's still not certain of, it’s almost like she’s always been there. Like despite all the shit that’s happened, the stress and worry and constant fighting that led her here, she was meant to end up in apartment 4D.

“Is that mine?”

Kiara stiffened. Surely JJ wasn’t addressing her. “What?”

Her eyes slowly slid to his, as pleasantly as nails on a chalkboard. And sure enough, he stared back at her, clear blue flitting from her face to the stained emblem on her chest.

“My hoodie.”

“Oh,” Kiara said, because what the fuck else was she supposed to say? She landed him with a look she hoped was as unimpressed as she felt, and gave away none of the burning in her ears. Glanced down at the hoodie as if to study it, as if she didn’t already know exactly what she was wearing. “I don’t know. I guess.”

She figured this had to be the part where she melted into a puddle, or the building caught fire. No worse than the pain of slipping out of an elevator to go about her day after this shit.

“Guys, can we not,” he tries weakly, running a hand through his hair, desperate to keep his friends from fighting, to no avail. Pope and Sarah are already talking over each other, Cleo rolling her eyes and turning away while John B tries to play peacemaker. JJ’s hands start shaking, the way they always do when people are arguing around him - one of the many side effects of growing up with Luke. His jaw tightens and he chews on the inside of his cheek, his patience running thin. This is not what he wanted. “Sarah, it’s fi—" “Hey guys, can you all chill? I’ve got the champagne, it’s all good.” or JJ is christening his boat. Kiara isn't gonna miss it.

She waits for him. Cleo tries to pull her out of the way once  they’re out, and so does John B, but she stays close, the flame licking  at her heels until JJ is out that window, hand clasped in hers.

Her other hand flies out to his face for a second, fingers probing  for injuries, and when she’s satisfied that he’s okay, she takes a step  back, coughing loudly.

OR the missing jiara scenes we deserved in 3x09 and 3x10.

Maybe he was numb, desensitized to a lot of shit. Glass shattering, curse words flying, knuckles and ribs cracking.

But not to her.

A lot of JJ’s world bled together into something gray and empty –  a dull ringing in his ears, vision gone blank white, the faded black of an eye. But something about him and Kie always shone bright like glitter scattered over a dark canvas, screaming in color.

But this time? Standing on the dock, the scorching sun no match for her laser beam glare burning him alive – he has no idea what the fuck he did.

Jiara Bingo prompt - nothing to lose club

“Hi.”

The wrench in his hand goes skittering sideways at the sound of her quiet voice behind him, thudding into the dirt. When he turns and finds her standing at the edge of the driveway, his heart can’t help that familiar fluttering as he watches her draw closer – long tanned legs, a John B-esque shirt buttoned over some stupidly small thing that barely classifies as a top. Relief sings through his veins as he stares at her, all in one glorious piece.

He's paralyzed, remembering the way she’d run to him on the dock and thrown herself into his arms. The way he’d refused to let her out of his sight until he was forced to, their hands laced tightly together until her parents had led her away. He tries and fails to force his racing heart to calm down.

“Sup,” he manages, his greedy eyes taking her in.

JJ laughs, pouring an obscene amount of vodka in a solo cup before adding a splash of whatever red juice is nearby. “Can you believe everyone thinks me and Kie are a couple?”

John B and Sarah scoff as Pope answers for all of them. His deep chestnut eyes squint in disbelief under his pointed Spock eyebrows.

“Yeah,” he says as if JJ’s as thick as they come. “JJ, you’ve been a couple since the damn island.”

He doesn’t really know how to take that, least of all coming from Pope.

Except that usually when Pope says something he means it. And when Pope means something, it’s usually true.

“Well. That’s not how I saw that going,” JJ says, his tone light but a faint thread of annoyance lingering under the words.

She laughs. “Yeah. Me either. I thought…” She lets the words trail off, because she’d thought that JJ was about to kiss her there in the backyard at a stupid Halloween party. Part of her is disappointed, but a tiny part of her is secretly glad, because she doesn’t know if she wanted their first kiss to happen in such a public place, for everyone to see.

There’s a long moment that stretches out between them. It feels insurmountable, like he’s miles away instead of a couple feet from her. His eyes widen before they narrow and settle into a glare, though it’s not as harsh as she expected. Her heart pounds nervously, a frantic staccato. He shifts his weight as though he’s debating coming closer or continuing on by.

She wouldn’t blame him if he walked by and left her here. She’s kind of a mess and he likely doesn’t want to get involved in her emotional drama. Plus, he probably hates her.

Of course the first time they actually have an opportunity to talk alone in months, she’s a goddamn sobbing mess.

His mouth opens as though he’s going to say something, and she braces herself because she’s sure it’s going to hurt. JJ can be particularly cruel when he wants to be - always quick with a scathing remark aimed at what he knows is a sore spot. But then he shakes his head, an undercurrent of something she can’t catch flashing across his face. Then he looks away and he moves to walk around her.

He wants to bolt, but she lifts her eyes in that exact moment, and she doesn’t seem too shocked by his appearance. Almost like she was expecting him.

Her eyes flicker over his face, then his chest, his arms, his hands, his legs… she’s taking stock, JJ realizes. It makes him feel worse, somehow. When she’s satisfied that he’s still in one piece, she lowers her eyes back to her lap, pulling harder on the threads.

Does he always dance with girls like this? She’s seen him dancing sometimes with other girls, but has never spent much time analyzing it. Her stomach kind of lurches at the idea and she blames the combination of alcohol and JJ’s crazy dance moves.

But then she catches a glimpse of his face, catches the tiny flicker of uncertainty even as he tries to smother it with confidence. Sees the way he licks his lips before finding her eyes, a tiny smile playing at his mouth. She meets his smile with one of her own, a secret one that blooms slowly as she winds her arms tighter around him.

A feeling almost like excitement burns inside of her as they move together, her body perfectly aligned with his. In the back of her mind a tiny voice screams at her.

What are you doing? This is JJ - your best friend. Best friends do not dance like this.
