BC: Of course I can! In the mid 11th century, Rabbi Yitzchak Alfasi, or the RIF, from Morocco created a new law code that solved halakhic problems and became the model of other literature. He was starting to get worried that people did not have text or language skills to study Talmud anymore, and knew that he must take action and codify. Though it looks like the Talmud and is sometimes even word for word Talmud, it is not the Talmud! It has the details of laws but is simpler because it removes argumentation. Also, unlike the Talmud, it only talks about laws in practice.

You: Where did Alfasi get the idea to create such a book?

BC: That's a very interesting question! At this time, there were so many different areas of Jewish life in the world, and the RIF wanted to create a binding and decisive codified law. This way, all the different customs could be regulated under one text.
