i don't think jesse's parents were openly abusive or openly neglectful. i think they probably read every parenting book and took him to school on time every day and told him they loved him - and here's the kicker - jesse got fucked up anyway.
because jesse's a classic case of ADHD. talks a lot but doesn't think before he speaks, makes small mistakes, struggles in school, has raging rejection sensitive dysphoria. and for kids like him, those types of "good" parents don't work. suddenly their grand plan for their kid's life is off the rails, and it can't be their fault (because they did everything right), so it must be his. so they push him harder, with that quiet disapproval. they expect better, they tell him. he needs to work harder. try more.
but jesse has ADHD, so working harder and trying more don't work. so the pressure gets to his head and he's frozen in place and everything's his fault, so he just gives up. blink and he's failing his classes. blink and he never went to college. blink and they're kicking him out of the house.
and i honestly think that's so important - that sometimes, a kid will grow up in a house that supposedly has everything he could need in the whole wide world, and he'll get fucked up anyway. because he's got adhd, so he's still trying to fit shoes he'll never be able to fill. the same way that walter chases impossible ideals of masculinity, jesse probably spent his childhood trying to be someone he fundamentally wasn't ever going to be able to be.
and that right there is what fucks people up. not just downright abuse or neglect; just the simple fact that no matter how many parenting books your parents read, or how many times they say 'i love you,' they still look at you and see everything you aren't.
i talk a lot about el camino being a “quiet” movie and probably the best example of both that “quietness” and the movie’s realistic depiction of PTSD and the early days of “freedom” after extended abuse/torture is the shower scene at skinny’s house. a movie more concerned with turning jesse’s implied torture into a spectacle would’ve Amplified this scene—lingered more on his scars, lengthened his split-second flashback to being hosed, escalated his reaction to said flashback—but el camino doesn’t want to dramatize the quiet, achy reality of Living Through It. jesse has that brief flashback to being hosed and just grunts out a soft, involuntary “no” in the present moment. just a quiet “no”. el camino is as much about the absence of dialogue and sound as it is the dialogue. no answer to “did they really keep u in a. cage?” extensive silence during his flashbacks to mike and walt. no response to his parents after they beg him to turn himself in. the soft, scared “no” before reality returns. fuck, how can u sum up the experience of surviving torture and abuse with a long, quiet shower and a two-letter word??
as aaron paul gets older he should play a younger and younger jesse pinkman. i want a flashback to his chemistry class or something with an obviously 43 year old aaron playing him. by the time hes 60 he should playing elementary school jesse. just keep going

Literally watched the entirety of Breaking Bad wishing I was neck-deep in this bleakass hyper realistic nightmare world of drug dealing and murder just so there would be someone there in the show to treat Jesse like an actual person. Just screaming at my tv waiting and waiting so patient for someone to treat him like a human being for someone to notice that he needed help and give it to him and I was given morsels. Crumbs. Scraps, even. All these other characters too far up their own asses to even notice that he’s baby well y’all dead now huh
