“Okay,” I said, letting him pull me along again. “But I just want to get one thing straight. I did not do all this – you know, get myself exorcised and come up here and all – because I’m in love with you or anything like that.”

*Jesse, who'd stayed where he was, looked defensive. Spike was his baby, and you just don't go around calling Jesse's baby ugly.*

Suze: He's not so bad.

Gina: Are you on crack? Simon, the thing's only got one ear.

*Jesse starts rattling a mirror with his ghost powers, Gina thinks it's an earthquake*

Gina: All right! Another one!

*Jesse, still annoyed, makes a bottle of nail polish fly off the dressing table and land, open, on Gina's clothes in her suitcase*

Gina: *shrieks and dives to salvage her clothes*

*Suze shoots Jesse a dirty look*

Jesse: Don't look at me like that, Susannah. You heard what she said about him. She called him ugly.

Suze: I say he's ugly all the time, and you don't ever do that to me.

So, this thing just came across my dash complaining about how in books these days all of the special little snowflake female characters read books and drink tea and don’t conform to society’s standards of femininity and what not. I don’t really care but if you’re a person who finds this tendency irksome then I have a suggestion: The Mediator Series by Meg Cabot (or Jenny Carrol because half the series is under one name and the rest is under the other sometimes).

Suze Simon, the main character and all around BAMF, is a teenage girl from New York. She can see ghosts and helps them cross to the ‘other side’, whatever that may mean. Her mother marries a man from California and the story begins with Suze flying out to live with her new family.

A few things you should know about Suze Simon:

She’s a kick boxer

She’s capable of maintaining normal relations with guys whom she finds attractive (and guys in general). Suze isn’t socially awkward or in need of being “brought out of her shell.” Her outlook on boys is what society would deem normal for a teenage girl: some are yummy, some are jerks, and some are friends.

She’s capable of maintaining friendships with girls, for the most part. Is she a little more defensive around women than around men? Yes. Does this impede her ability to function in a high school or work setting? Not one bit.

She stands up for herself against men, women, and ghosts. Suze doesn’t give half a fuck who you are, she’s the only one in-charge of herself.

She’s quite willing to blow an entire summer’s worth of paychecks on a new wardrobe.

She’s stubborn and blunt and caring and no nonsense but she knows that her actions have consequences.

She pushes people away and tries to be self-sufficient, but she learns/knows how to ask for help.

Suze is a bit of a delinquent because of the whole ghost business, but she feels bad about it most of the time. This doesn’t stop her from doing what she thinks is right.

She wants a fairytale ending but whenever she lets that show she gets super embarrassed and defensive because it’s 'so out of character’ for her.

She has no problem pursuing other boys while her love interest, Jesse, keeps sending her 'mixed signals’. In his defense, they didn’t make 'em like Suze back when he was alive.

Basically, she’s a bad-ass who wears super cute trendy clothes and laughs while crushing your windpipe with her heels.

All in all, I am a pretty normal, everyday, American teenage girl. Except, of course, for the fact that I can talk to the dead.
