ASSESSMENT 1 final
For this assessment I chose the question, ‘can creative acts be rebellious when art and design has become canonised throughout art and design? What would a contemporary creative rebellion look like?’ For me this question stood out as I find interest in the heavy concepts behind ‘rebellious’ art. At first, I wasn’t entirely sure where to start, so I searched rebellion in hopes to trigger a thought.
Rebellion/rɪˈbɛljən
noun
an act of armed resistance to an established government or leader.
"the authorities put down a rebellion by landless colonials"
synonyms: uprising, revolt, insurrection, mutiny, revolution, insurgence, insurgency, rising, rioting, riot; More
the action or process of resisting authority, control, or convention.
"an act of teenage rebellion"
synonyms: defiance, disobedience, rebelliousness, insubordination, mutinousness, subversion, subversiveness, resistance, dissent, nonconformity.
The first thing that came to mind was the sex pistols. The most notorious rebellious band of all time, I thought somehow, I could factor them into my poster considering everything they stood for was defying government rules. This ended in the idea of appropriating their album cover for ‘never mind the bollocks’ changing the title from ‘never mind the bollocks here comes the sex pistols’ to ‘never mind the politics, here comes the creative rebellion’. however, I was unhappy with the outcome and thought it was too straight forward. From this I took a break to think for a while, I searched posters in google images and found most of what came up was old war propaganda. I decided to stick to my idea of taking something and recontextualising it, this time with the propaganda. I found a few references I liked and played around with some ideas before picking a well-known poster that reads ‘your country needs YOU’ with an image of a soldier pointing at the reader. I felt for this I could keep the quote as it is to refer back to the creative rebellion in which my poster represents. I replaced the image of a soldier with what is known as a typical ‘art hoe’ (a person with blunt bangs, a bob and septum piercing), a stereotypical artist. The artist is now saying ‘your country needs YOU’ as she points at you holding a paintbrush. As in to join her with creating art, almost like a war against boring confirmative society.
This is my poster.
This is the original poster.
Draft poster
Here’s a quick sketch of my final idea , an appropriation of an army recruiting poster. I replaced the soldier with a ‘typical art hoe’ but with the same writing of “your country needs you” expressing societies need for artists and creative rebellion. Now to just to re draw this bigger and better.
Poster plan
War posters I plan to try and re create into a creative rebellion poster ..
Never mind the politics
Poster idea - sex pistols appropriation
I decided to appropriate the sex pistols never mind the bollocks album to suit my concept. Sticking to the stereotypical rebellious facade of the sex pistols I changed the word bollocks to politics and sex pistols to creative rebellion.
A simple approach but effective.
Possibly my final idea.
Sex pistols- Sid viscous
One of the worlds most nutorious punk rockers that made rebelling mainstream.
Although I don’t agree with his way of life it is no doubt that Sid viscous was the king of rebelling. Any chance he could he would do what society told him not to do. He was anti-rules and anti-government he didn’t give a damn about anything but his reputation.

Final work
Starting this assessment I had no idea where to start. Considering my topic is vagueness I thought more upon my lack of ideas as a start. Does that make sense? No. But that’s the point. My experiments are vague and my final work is vague. I don’t entirely have a concept for this piece. The original idea came from my final work for assessment one, the photographs of a light box. All I knew is I wanted to use the light box as the main part. Throughout experimentation I grew bored of how the light box photographed and decided to focus more on the letters. The alphabet is an unconscious part of everyday life. In fact without it we wouldn’t even have the word vague. Where does the alphabet come from? Who created it? Who created words ? Letters and words are just a social construct. Once we tear down what’s ingrained in us about the English language, we could create unimaginable things.
Old English
The history of writing in Britain begins with the Anglo-Saxons in the fifth century AD. With ties to Scandinavia and other North Seas cultures, ancient Anglo-Saxon writing, called futhorc, was a runic language. Flexible, new runes were routinely added such that, although it first appeared in England with 26 characters, by the time of its demise (by the 11th century AD), it had 33.
In the seventh century AD, the Latin alphabet introduced by Christian missionaries had begun to take hold. By 1011, a formal list of the Old English alphabet was made and included all of our present letters except J, U (or V)* and W. The ampersand and five uniquely English letters, designated ond, wynn, thorn, eth and ash, were included.

EXPERIMENT #2
Words are just a figment of our imagination right ?
Who came up with the first word ? Or the word for word ? Or the alphabet inside the words? Anything could be a word if you want it to be? These are just words.
initial brainstorm/experiment assessment #3
For this assessment I will be experimenting the topic of ‘vague’. I have decided to try and continue on with inspiration from my final work in assessment #1 .
These are the final photographs/experiment for assessment #1
