He might not be able to watch the waves crash against the sand or hear the sound of it, but Qarl has realized a very important thingĀ :Ā he can be far from the iron islands and carry them with him at the same time, a bit of them, at least. He can be miles from it and still be home, in a way. Asha is his home, his safe haven, it cannot be otherwise.Ā
Ā Ā Soft curve of his lips soon becomes an amusement fueled grin, because she seems to have missed his point, the whole reason why he made them leave the comfort of warm spaces. This would have been far smoother on the islands, of course, where one of the traditional rites for marriage has the couple ankle-deep into the water, as they perform their vows before the drowned godĀ āāĀ this is the closest thing he could think of, without venturing too far. It might not be recognized by the law, and they might not be wed for longĀ (Ā if she agrees to itĀ ), he knows all of it, has held this truth in his heart for days, yet it is not relevant. Not when being able to call her wife even just once would be enough to fill his heart with joy.

āĀ qarlĀ .Ā āĀ Ā his name is spoken like a prayer,Ā fingertips rising to splay gently over his scarred but still smooth cheek.Ā asha has never been theĀ Ā godlyĀ sort,Ā but suddenly she finds herself overwhelmed with reverence.Ā Ā it can only be aĀ miracleĀ that they had survived this longĀ &Ā found themselves together stillĀ --Ā for she had prayed for that alone when sheād been imprisonedĀ &Ā trapped in that accursed blizzard.Ā Ā &Ā it may be so that qarl is too lowborn for her to wed,Ā &Ā asha may already have a husband awaiting her back in the isles.Ā but the world itself is coming to an end,Ā if the maesters are to be believed.Ā Ā &Ā asha intended to spend whatever time remained to her withĀ Ā qarl.Ā her free hand seeks his,Ā slips their fingers togetherĀ &Ā grips tightly,Ā their hands entwined tightly between their beating hearts.Ā Ā āĀ if you freely offer your hand to me,Ā then i will gladly take it.Ā Ā it would honor me to be yourĀ wife.Ā Ā āĀ Ā laughter bubbles up from her throat at her use of the unfamiliar word,Ā the sound joining with the soft song of the stream.Ā Ā all water flows to the sea, Ā asha knows.Ā Ā the creek will carry their vows to the ocean.
