An illustration of my amazing mom - who is a very talented cook! She makes pasta noodles from scratch (well, she makes everything from scratch) and makes everything with a whole lotta love. During our destination wedding trip in Antigua, I studied and did my three dives to become a certified scuba diver. Before this, I never even went under water without holding my nose! Part of the training involved the instructor pulling off your mask at 40ft underwater. This was so that you could demonstrate that you could recover should this happen outside of training. Having learned that you would need to decompress before resurfacing to prevent the bends, I knew that this was a potential life or death moment, even though my amazing instructor assured me no one had died under her supervision. So when the time came, she pulled off my mask; the salt water stung my eyes and my first instinct is to panic - but then something clicks. I calmly remember my training and successfully clear my mask. I remember this story whenever I do something scary that I don’t think I’m capable of doing. It makes me wonder what else I can do, so I look for what scares me. Now I know I can do the research and training to do it. If someone else has done it, why not me too? Being a freelance illustrator means you wear all the hats - creation, marketing, shipping . . . I have a background in graphic design, so I love branding! I’ve rebranded countless times, and each time is closer to my authentic voice than the last. But when you’re busy designing branding material, you aren’t creating products! I dedicate some time for this now, and once that time is over, I’m back to painting for my clients. After all, you’re why I’m here in the first place and even need a brand in the first place!
