Some of the fun of living in our Suburban Psuedo-Countryside are the infrequent animal encounters. On the way to school this morning, this little family attempted to cross the road. After dropping the girls off, I kept an eye out for the goslings on the return home. They had tried again to cross that road, and again my monster minivan startled them. The life we chose for our family is far from "normal," but it would hardly be considered "unique." And while there are many benefits of growing up in a new town every couple of years, it is little consolation to the tears that shine down these little faces. They are brave in their self-assuredness, fierce in their love and loyalty, and have already gleaned a global perspective that are lacking in many adults. We couldn't have asked for two more poised and gracious girls (fart jokes and all) and our hearts swell with pride at the people these ladies are rapidly becoming. "I have a feeling we'll be getting our pictures back," he said with so much certainty. "I have a feeling we'll never see any of it again," I replied with equal amounts of rationality. And who do you suppose was right? For someone who claims to have zero belief in any and all spirituality, he sure does have a psychic moment or two. Per day. He called thirty minutes after he left the house this morning, his exuberance shining through in the way he said hello. "The detective called," he told me, "and she says the camera was sold to a pawn shop two days ago!" We don't know if the pictures are still there or not. The detective says it'll be a couple of weeks to process the camera before it will be returned to us. "But she said she'll check the memory card when she goes to the pawn shop today." Fingers and toes crossed! We will keep y'all posted....

And just like that, a beautiful, sunny Sunday was smashed, a glittering pool of glass shards left in its wake. What was taken from the car amounted to about $50 - a mixture of old and new stuff, barely worth the energy it took to steal it. For my girls, it was a bigger loss. Stolen from them was their sense of security and trust in the world. A small piece of their lighthearted innocence that will never be returned. "Why would they DO this to us?" the little one had wailed. "Why NOT us?" was my complicated response. Children have the incredible power of forcing you to take a hard look at the world and attempt to make sense of the senseless ways we hurt each other.

This cat. So I've just finished a challenging Buti Yoga workout and am finally permitted to lay on the floor in Shavasana (where you simply lay flat on your back and thank the good lord you survived) when our newish not-so-little kitty saunters up and gently bites the meaty part of my hand.
