ancient beyond comprehension

for one. Yoko Shimomura composed a waltz of all things for the Sora & Riku game. a fucking waltz. do I even need to spell out to you how romantic of a choice that is? but besides the Soriku of it all, I also really like the way the melody perfectly transitions from the expected tempo of Dearly Beloved into the tempo of a waltz. it genuinely sounds like dropping into a dream, with all of the whimsy of the score for Fantasia 2000. which is perfect, considering that movie is literally one of the worlds in the game. (I'll address that elephant in the room in a minute.) Shimomura even snuck in hints of the game's world select theme, just to hammer in how dreamy this rendition of Dearly Beloved is.

the version in the credits is even better; the waltz portion lasts for longer and somehow sounds even more beautiful than the title screen version. it eventually transitions into a melody akin to March Caprice from KH1- triumphant and hopeful, as KH has always been. also, as the music swells at the end of the credits, we see Sora and Riku, walking side by side into the door of light. bruh. hello, opening cutscene poems from CoM/KH2 (iirc) finally coming full circle. Nomura knows people who use subtext, and they're all cowards.

then there's the elephant in the room. Symphony of Sorcery. the world in which Kingdom Hearts uses music diagetically for the first time in the entire series. the world where Sora and Riku find Sound Ideas, connect them to their own hearts, and then combine them to create a song so powerful that it single-handedly drives away the darkness controlling Mickey. a song that just so happens to be the original Dearly Beloved.

they did not have to do this. genuinely, they didn't have to turn Dearly Beloved into the Soriku song at all. it wasn't necessary for the main story, as they'd already done more than enough to establish that the bond between Sora and Riku's hearts is powerful. BUT THEY STILL DID IT. and now we live in a post-Symphony of Sorcery world, wherein the main theme of the entire series is canonically the song that Sora and Riku's hearts created together. Nomura is trying to kill me, I swear.

to make things even more gay, the world immediately following Symphony of Sorcery is The World That Never Was, where we see the combined Keyblade for the first time. we get no explanation for this- not even a proper name- and then for some reason, they decided to bring the gayblade back in KH3 just so Sora and Riku could free Mickey again with Dearly fucking Beloved playing in the background. oh my god.

the most interesting way to read this is that the combined Keyblade is a result of Sora and Riku's hearts being in tune. the gayblade is literally Dearly Beloved. imagine if that was actually its proper name. I'd roll into the grave immediately.
