I DIDN'T THINK I WOULD DO THAT AHEAD OF SUMMER BUT I *DID!!!!*

Hello everyone! I am back with another piece of media I consumed! It was longer than the others, so I wanted to wait until I finished it to write my thoughts all at once. I'm not usually a reality TV watcher, so this was new for me. Thoughts incoming, just kinda mashed together from all episodes because I CANNOT do one-at-a-time, I'll go insane.

-LOVE the stop-motion animation opening, wow it's almost like my FILM is mostly stop-motion, look at that.

-I'm learning so much, I hadn't heard of Murray Hill or that style of drag king! I love how he performs, he kinda operates on cartoon logic in real life.

-the vibes are so different from a lot of reality contestant shows. Everyone actually gets along, which is nice. It's so much less stressful for me omg. Even when there were maybe tiny tense moments, they didn't devolve into Huge Arguments for TV

-a LOT of alt people! Henlo and Perka, even Buck Wylde, they have influences from more alternative scenes which was super coool. Love Perka's makeup omg

-lots of muscle contour, literary references, and dick jokes. perfect for inspiration for mr. hyde

-VINCENT PRICKS LMAOOOOOOO

-weenie and beefy challenge. i'm losin it

-mr von dyke it's ok we all feel like throwing up before the big performance. I used to have to go cry in the bathroom before applying my stage makeup.

-everyone was fabulous! I love how each person really had a different style of drag, they all had their own way of tackling the art form. It was so cool to see the range from more traditional-style kings to more alt ones. The rule seemed to be "be good at what YOU'RE doing."

Hello hello! I did a lot of stuff this week! Wowie!

-did more Boarding. The Board still calls and consumes, but I'm also running into some problems. I'm sort of getting into my own head a bit and worrying about film length, but I don't think I need to at the moment. arguing with my own head is EXHAAAAAAUSTIIIIIIIING

-specifically, the middle is hard to figure out. I want to do an experimental sequence, but I don't know how to put that in The Board. I also want to have the film be well-paced and not too *short.*

-i am rapidly realizing I should probably talk to a gynecologist about what a hysterectomy procedure actually entails.

-continued my series watch of King of Drag. I like it! The vibes are so nice. There's not a lot of Drama™️ so far, which I actually like. I'm not a huge reality TV person so that's perfect for me.

-went to a drag show IN REAL LIFE and it was SO GOOD!!! Kings performed to musical numbers every 30 minutes, highlights include:

-hercules group number at the end that also mixed in LOVE NEVER DIES????

-guy who smoked an entire cigar on the balcony.

-guest from another city with INCREDIBLE makeup who did a ONCELER NUMBER. WITH THE CUT LORAX SONG THAT WAS ACTUALLY GOOD. AAAAAAAAAAA

-performer who did theirs in sign language

-rocky horror number.

-performer sang live, it was his last day before musical college program. He was GOOD.

-it was a 10/10 experience. support your kings!! If you like drag queens you'll love their stuff too!! They're SO GOOD

-I also have been reaching out to more people, both in-person and online. People are much more willing to talk to me than I thought. I'm always nervous being like "so tell me about your life and your job" but they're always so nice about it!

-did some more BOARDING. this thing is a behemoth. I'm gonna have to flip it over soon and use the other side. I am also gonna run out of index cards. I'm truly lost to The Board

-working my way through King of Drag, AKA my next piece of media to review! It's six episodes so it's taking me a MINUTE.

-the Board still consumes me. I worked on it at a lovely little coffee shop and then it just kept going.

(My real inspo for this film's aesthetic is Muppet Christmas Carol, but that is sacrilege to rewatch in July unless it's an EMERGENCY)

-love the grain over all the footage, very nostalgic. I miss when films were kind of crunchy like that

-all the music sounds like it's live. Like it's not, it's pre-recorded, but it sounds like the stuff that would accompany those black-and-white films Live in the Theatre

-the muppets move in very wiggly ways. they wobble to their next location, moving from side to side. they always have a little ✨️shake✨️. they're also never completely stagnant when the focus is on them. If their hand is still, their arm is moving.

-the PUNS omg

-the establishing shot over the swamp and then the push in on Kermit ooooough

-the muppets don't smile or frown, their faces and bodies move/twist. kermit extremely expressive despite having no eyelids it's SOOOOOO GOOOD.

-the humans move theatrically it's so fun

-the music ✨️sparkles✨️

-KERMIT'S LEGS RIDING THE BIKE HAHAHAHAHAHHAHA

-the obvious cheat with the guy reacting to Kermit "getting crushed" but we don't see it...writing this down...

-EL SLEEZO CAFÉ "I AM THE OWNER" HAS LIVED IN MY HEAD SINCE I WAS SIX

-the muppets don't walk, they shuffle-hop

-went over my head that fozzie was probably stepping in for. burlesque.

-small crowd but feels large

-movements on puppets are jerky, but that adds to the charm

-"drinks on the house" and they go up to the roof. movie of all time

-big bird going to NYC to work in public television :,] (honestly I'd love to work on something like sesame street, it's a goal of mine to make public-access television for kids at some point)

-the sets are less colorful than the characters. Lots of brown, green, earthy tones. very much a summer day in the smaller pockets of the U. S., nostalgia-invoking. It feels very warm, literally.

-the "try hare krishna" gag being on the sign outside the church WJFJGMSMSKFNGKJD

-the HIPSTER CAFÉ with ORGANIC REFRESHMENTS this is incredible

-lots of fourth-wall-breaking, literally read the script to understand what's going on.

-the exaggerated puppet sleeping lmao

-the whole church moves with the rhythm of the song

-the way they "disguise" the car by painting it bright colors and sparkly and it WORKS by camouflage with a road billboard

-GONZO!!!! AND HIS CHICKEN WIFE!!! HELLO!!!!

-"why are you hopping" "because I'm HOPPING MAD"

-the car salesman getting scammed, go my muppets

-different types of muppets move differently. jack lumbers side to side, kermit is lighter, fozzie moves in circles, etc.

-real chickens and muppet chickens coexist in this world

-recreating iconic romantic scenes through this musical number.

-there's a lot of bits in this film that technically don't matter to the story, but they're fun and funny. I like that they were kept in.

-kinda theater-y backdrops, sky and moon very obviously not real. that's not a critique, i like it

-"motorcycle cop is a sweet nothing?"

-animal coming in to SAVE THE DAY. The SCREAM. I CAN'T

(yes I didn't do one last week shhhhhhhh it's fiiiiine)

-i have created the Board. The Board is a cardboard box my roommate left behind after moving that I am sticking storyboard index cards on. I draw a panel on the card, then stick it on with painter's tape. The Board has now taken over my life. i have so many other things to do but...the Board...it calls to me...

(This is me, currently, pasting things onto my board.)

-with creation of the Board, I have realized something about my creative process. I like to board first! this is opposite of the typical animation pipeline. Usually you design a character and backgrounds, THEN you board. On others' projects, I totally fit into this pipeline. On my own, I like to do an initial design, then board, then after boarding refine the design according to what I need for fabrication. When I board, I get to know the character more. I do initial sketches and design passes first, ofc, but with each panel the character becomes more alive. Maybe that's because of how I used to do a comic strip? the more I drew my characters doing their shenanigans, the more they worked for me? idk man psychoanalysis isn't what the blog's about

-there is also a smaller Board, a baby Board if you will, that has the last scene on it. That's the one segment I don't want to change

-really working on boarding has been the main thing. I will be reaching out to other consultants next week to HOPEFULLY get some interviews yay yay

-rewatched the muppet movie! review incoming >:] (i loved it obviously)

-problem-solving the scale of this project is, at times, really funny. for example: instead of making a whole puppet, why don't I make x character 3,000 feet tall and only do the legs? (This makes sense in context of what I'm doing I swear)

wrote a script draft and it was only EIGHT PAGES which is the GOAL!! Yippee!!

ONWARDS!!

-the lighting is SOOOO GOOD in this film, how it moves in circles on Evelyn and Waymond's faces during the In Another Life sequence, how it flashes different colors and feels so *chaotic,* ough it's so pretty

-we see a mirror with the family, then an empty mirror in shot 1. the mirror motif reoccurs throughout this film

-the film is an adrenaline moment from minute one, jesus christ

-circle motif starts with mirror, continues with joy staring dejectedly at the washing machine spin

-the characters talk over each other, the camera moves as fast as they do. one of my favorite camera moves is from behind a long row of washing machines, following evelyn and joy as they walk

-NOT THE IRS

-evelyn is harsh because she's stressed, feels she has to be. waymond is happier, but not ignorant of anything going on

-WAYMOND WANTS A DIVORCE OH NAURRRRR

-the entire set is always cluttered, except in a few key scenes (the temple with the bagel and the rock cliff are the spaces that come to mind.) There's always stuff, people, chaos.

-evelyn is constantly doing things, constantly busy, always on the move

-this woman and her dog WEFIBHZDVBVFOJBADVSOJ

-waymond transforming over the security footage omg

-when evelyn looks at the television and sees the actors, you can tell she's longing for something else. it's a familiar want a lot of people have, "what if I was a famous actress/kept up that creative hobby/etc."

-"not all parents are as open-minded as me" aka what parents who WANT to think they're open-minded say

-"you need to eat healther, you're getting fat" EVELYN

-on a serious note, evelyn doesn't know how to tell joy she cares, or be nice

-the part 1, 2, 3 is funnnnnnn

-waymond wants to repair things, but he doesn't know how to get her attention :[

-the physical performances in this movie are so good, especially Ke Huy Quan's when he transforms between waymonds. The actors all did absolutely incredible work, they really exaggerated the motions.

-I remember having no idea where this was going the first time. the audience feels as overwhelmed as evelyn

-these whack-ass instructions

-her "business ventures" EVELYN PLEASE DON'T COMMIT TAX FRAUD

-the fractured mirror effect is SO SO COOL, showing the different paths she could take. it starts at the IRS, then continues until the film's end and i love it

-deirdre talking about "following the story" WDOUHGRHERPIHIHPA

-the awards look like buttplugs. this won't be relevant, I'M SURE

-waymond and deirdre both say their "conversation is the most important thing happening right now"

-she sees alpha waymond in the mirror!

-throughout the film, the lives bleed into each other. evelyn commits an action in one universe, it's reflected in another

-tax auditor convinced by waymond's kindness...they have until 6pm tonight...

-SHE PUNCHED THE AUDITOR IN THE FACE???????

-the moving camera and the composition of the triangular pattern of the floor pointing to waymond in the shot where he eats the chapstick...cinema

-the action in this film is reminiscent of older martial arts action movies, which is obviously on purpose. the fight choreography is fast with a lot of kung-fu/martial arts moves

-waymond being uncharacteristically harsh omg

-"sorry, can't, too busy" "i want to lie here" EVELYNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN

-circle on the alternate deirdre's head...very interesting...

-the grandpa eating yogurt in the other room LMAO

-"she's an agent of pure chaos with no motives or desires!" is this how they see joy, perhaps?

-the production design is also so good, there are so many fun art/costume/set choices I love. everything is so colorful and yet so normal

-the description of things feeling Wrong feels more relevant than ever, unfortunately

-waymond wants to talk it out, but he's losing faith, and he knows evelyn regrets her choices. "i never said that" "you didn't have to" and what if I died. what if.

-the footage in the kung fu master/famous actor sequence is from Yeoh's film career!

-CLAIR DE LUNE?!

-introduction of new ability is made clear through use of slow motion, then the fight is sped up once we understand what's happening. film allows us to catch up

-her pushing joy to the limit and turning her into jobu is such a good metaphor for pushing kids to be "the best," and them becoming depressed adults because they feel like they have "wasted potential." joy cracked under the multiverse pressure, and the normal universe pressure

-a pet pig and a cigarette, jobu you're kind of iconic. she really doesn't give a shit about social convention. she is adamant about not being able to do something vs. not being allowed to do something. if she can, she will

-the organic ketchup omg

-the transitions between outfits just being cuts of her in the same place in different clothes

-jobu calling out evelyn for being most upset she likes girls thank you

-UNIVERSE WITH HOT DOG FINGERS AND OLD WOMAN YURI

-"nothing matters" "feels nice doesn't it" oh the initial appeal of nihilism ough

-AND HERE COMES THE GRANDPA WITH THE STEEL CHAIR!!!

-Evelyn with goals she never finished, dreams she never followed, her failures were successes for other things. She's "capable of anything because you're so bad at everything." She sees her current life as a failure

-oh the butt plug awards are revelant. okay.

-all the different versions of joy, and she's looking at everything with disdain

-"i know the joy and the pain of having you as a mother" AND WHAT IF I WAS STABBED

-joy and her mom are very alike. They have the same existential fear, the same feeling of "wasted potential." They both look at the present they're living as unfulfilling.

-evelyn sees what joy sees, and she decides to give up. nothing matters.

-the fight directly parallels what's happening in the mundane universe. she stabs waymond in one universe, and signs the divorce papers in the other. I'm SICK

-"every other universe screaming for your atrention"

-she messes up all her lives at once, kinestasis animation through the various universes

-the rocks at the cliff edge I gotta lock in

-joy hoped evelyn would have an answer after seeing it all, she still wants her mom to know what to do :<

-the slowest part of the film. Narrative slows down, breathes.

-there's only text on the screen but it's still compelling

-joy wants to die, and she doesn't want to do it alone. evelyn is still drawn to life and her "silly husband"

-waymond's whole monologue about his kindness being "strategic and necessary," cut with him talking to deirdre and evelyn being let go, oh it's SO GOOD!!! I love how this film treats waymond's viewpoint. As a generally nice person, I often get the same treatment waymond does, and when I first saw this movie it was so validating because YES!!! THAT'S WHY I'M NICE EVERYONE!!! IT'S ON PURPOSE

-"it's cold unlovable bitches like us that make the world go round" DEIRDRE

-the bullet turned googly eye

-"there are no rules. I'm gonna get you" OUGH OUGH OUGH OUGH WHY IS THAT SO MOVING TO ME

-her fixing everyone's various issues on the stairs is so funny. that one guy's back pain had me on the floor

-her almost letting joy go, but then turning back aaaaaaa

-"i would choose to be here with you" DON'T DO THIS TO ME

-not only does evelyn pull joy out of the bagel, but joy reaches out to grab her hand

-in the end, even though evelyn's big breakdown has passed, the other universes still call out to her

-no films this week, but I've been experiencing things IN REAL LIFE so that's fine

-have my first interviewee! not revealing names, obviously, but that is an accomplishment

-went to an open drag night at my local place (I am NOT doxxing myself right now) and it was incredible!

-First I did drag bingo with a friend, which I won twice and got a free shirt and drink, yay me! My friend and I made a little polka-dotted party hat out of the free cone water cup he got and the bingo blotter things. The hosting queen did an intermission show, which was really well done, and her jewelry was BEDAZZLED.

-to play you needed to donate to the trevor project, which of course I didn't mind. that was one of the big organizations when I was in high school, it's good to see it's still going strong. apparently they receive over like 40,000 calls a year, which is kind of heartbreaking. It's only increased since the election. It's good the service is around, especially when a lot of local call centers are no longer operating, but I hope we reach a time where we don't need it anymore.

-after that was a birthday celebration for a local king, and the open drag night. there was a wide diversity of acts, ranging from performers who'd been doing this for years, to first-timers who'd never been there before. I have some people to reach out to, even though cold-messaging people is a little scary. It was so cool to see the different aesthetics and personas people adopted, and how they tackled performing.

-They also passed out cake for the local king's birthday, which was super nice of them.

-figured out how to cut a character and STILL have the themes land. I reworked the treatment and it's looking super good!! I just need to figure out if there needs to be more buildup at the beginning...I got a really fun idea for the opening doctor's office scene from a friend :}

-the narration is fun, and it reads like a children's storybook, rather than being intrusive

-the transition between vincent and VINCENT PRICE is sooooo fun and silly

-however. perhaps don't dunk ur aunt in wax kiddo

-him and his zombie dog that doesn't even seem to mind being a zombie dog

-the lives of vincent and VINCENT PRICE blend together, the transition is really simple (just having a matching shot with the other version in the same place).

-no longer able to tell what's real and what isn't

-honestly this is actually pretty accurate seven-year-old behavior...

the amount of time I've spent worrying about this cat.

-the intro was so cool, i loved the slowwwwwwww crawl over the planet to the vastness of space, with the text slowly revealing itself. Really gave a sense of something *ominous.* also not afraid to use text to establish something right away!!

-the objects moving around and paper flipping by itself...the computer turning on...oooooo spooky. like nothing actually happens but it feels tense

-establishing the setting by going through the ship tunnels, nice nice.

-the door to the pods opens by itself, which feels. wrong. The pods themselves are unsettling until the lights turn on (waow the power of LIGHTING)

-kane, first to wake up, also first to die.

-SIGOURNEY WEAVERRRRRRRRR

-what little dialogue we get of the crew establishes character, Parker and Brett want their shares to be equal to the rest of the crew

-CAT CAT CAT CAT CAT!!! JONES THE CAT!!! OOOOOOH IF HE DOESN'T SURVIVE THE MOVIE I AM DOING SOMETHING DRASTIC

-lots of quiet as we follow dallas. a lot of quiet shots throughout the film where we follow characters around

-"it's not our system" 1. establishes that they're not near earth, and 2. establishes ripley is usually right about everything

-the traffic control call LMAOOOOO

-so they're a commercial towing vehicle stopped by a mysterious beacon, a little american gothic, like the huge open highways where truckers drive. (Alice Isn't Dead, anyone?)

-ash has a sharp memory, almost like...a computer...wonder what that's about

-lots of overlapping dialogue, natural sounding for a meal together. dallas also rarely yells

-was that an animal wail????? ship caught fire??? HULL BREACHED??? Holy shit that was out of nowhere

-they have wind chimes in the engine room. why is that funny to me.

-throughout the movie, there's a HUGE thing that happens, then a calm pause where it's explained, and then another HUGE thing atter you've been lulled into a sense of security. we actually learned about this in class (thank you professor)!! it makes the audience more receptive to exposition AND scares the shit out of them

-cold, primordial planet, flakes of carbon

-their BIG-ASS HELMETS lol

-color grading looks like those 70s and 80s sci-fi novel colors, lots of cold blue and orange-y yellow

-ripley not negotiating with parker and brett and them turning off the fog after she leaves LMAOOOOO

-this does illustrate something interesting. ripley is always treated as an equal, not a Girl Member of the crew. she isn't written the way someone who's trying Really Hard To Write a Woman™️ would.

-"quit griping" "i like griping" mecore

-huge fuckoff ship, makes the comms glitch, GIRL GET OUTTA THERE

-the giant alien inside that's looking through a telescope, and the alien looks like it's exploded, GUYS RUUUUUUN. (also once again we see a weird thing, then it's explained in a calmer moment)

-ripley finding out the beacon is a warning and ash not letting her go after them...suspicious

-oh the eggs are SO GROSS. I'm so squeamish why did I do this to myself

-when the face hugger jumps on Kane (HURK) we don't linger on it for long, we cut away immediately to them bringing him up

-ripley not letting them in because of procedure and ash letting them in anyway DESPITE being the scientific officer, and being a last-minute addition...SUSPICIOUS...

-ripley is also right, as we later find out. she is pretty much always right

-ACIDIC BLOOD??? CHOKING OUT KANE?? PUTTING SOMETHING IN HIS STOMACH??? EUUUY

-and...it's gone.

-the corpse falling on ripley scared me

-dallas is rash, ripley is careful. their dynamic is so interesting!!

-kane is better but not for long, something BURSTS OUT OF HIS STOMACH EW EW EW EW EW EW EW

-"DON'T TOUCH IT" ash you will die by my hand

-okay the baby alien running like a muppet made me giggle a little I'M SORRY

-the calm after is them throwing kane out of the airlock and having a funeral for him :<

-the use of lights flashing on and off in this movie is sooooooo good, it happens here when they're looking for the xenomorph, and later in the climactic scene. It makes things hard for both the audience and characters to see in a way that feels chaotic on purpose

-JONES!!! JONES HELLO!! HE GRACES MY SCREEN!!!

-brett looking for jones, yeah me too man

-everything is so. wet. euyyy

-oh. oh no. brett. brett look behind you, the alien molted LOOK BEHIND YOU AT WHAT JONES IS HISSING AT

-there's a lot of "AAAAAAA! wait phew nvm. OH SHIT AAAAAAAAAAAAAA"

-as soon as brett and kane gone, parker no longer cares about the shares. and no one throws it back in his face. I was expecting there to be some kind of argument about that, but was pleasantly surprised that there wasn't.

-damn dallas can't just google it :/

-oh the shot of the vent lines pointing at dallas with the flamethrower is so well-composed...the artistry...

-the handheld shot where she's running through the dark is so good

-james whale's status as one of the only openly gay directors at the time definitely influenced my reading

-love the effects! I have no idea how they made him invisible. Also every time a prop would just *float* i lost it.

-mrs. hall wears old-fashioned clothing, even for the period

-EVERYONE in the bar gossips, constantly. this is a gossipy town...

-the gag of the piano playing by itself made me howl

-the invisible man's entrance being far, then medium, then close made me giggle a little. also love how dramatically he's lit and framed in the open door, with a low-angle shot

-he has a low, gravelly voice, with a more careful rhythm. intimidating

-when setting up the room mr. invisible man just stands and stares out the window ominously AJDKFKGMGKRKFKFKKF

-lots of lovely moving camera work!

-character who closes the curtains to take off his bandages and show his true self...interesting...

-character must be bandaged and clothed to be seen, otherwise totally invisible and concealed (🏳️‍🌈 who said that)

-the people at the inn speculating why he's there is so accurate to a small town. that one guy being very invested in mr. invisible man having escaped jail is even more accurate

-when mr. invisible man's condition is revealed, we only see it for like a second. could have lingered a bit longer for emphasis

-he left his old lab without a trace? generally open man but with one terrible secret? keeps to himself and always draws the curtains? "it's a queer thing?" HMMMM... (yes I know "queer" was commonly used to mean "weird" but let me have this)

-mr. invisible man desperately wants to be left alone, to experiment and get back to what he was.

-the rules of filmmaking haven't quite set in yet, interestingly enough. the largest thing in frame is rarely the most important, the pacing isn't stuck to a three-act or five-act structure, lots of explanation. Not really something I minded, it's just interesting to see how films were structured before that became so widely integrated.

-he talks of how the entire world is afraid of him, now that they know what he is. "frightened to death," even. he seems to embrace being shunned by the world, after wanting to get back to it...interesting...

-he wanted to do all this for flora because he had no money and no respect, wants to be respected, feared, and powerful

-why is his death kind of sad :< "i meddled with things men weren't meant to" and he's actually nice to flora the whole movie, low bar but it is the 30s

-I'm totally reading into it very far, but I wonder if the invisible drug was at all inspired by the medical conversion therapy that was widely practiced. It "solves" a problem that doesn't actually exist (flora liked him without all the money and power), and causes more issues (the madness). Like it's a reach, but I thought of that.
