Heathers 2018

Crucify me all you want but please hear me out.

The reason I like the new heathers is because it does maintain the point of the original.

One of the main arguments people make is that it’s not following the original idea, however the original 80s movie was making fun of things that were popular in that day and things that were generally cliché or modern in that time. New Heathers is playing on the ideas of what a teenager is today and what teen movies are like today and is making fun of it.

Another point brought up is that they’re antagonizing the LGBT characters, however when you watch it, note that they don’t necessarily do that. When in reality (spoiler) Betty Finn is the antagonist of the story and it follows how Duke and Mac are handling Chandler’s death. Veronica and JD are also pretty antagonistic in the show as well.

People are also complaining about the absurd language used in the show and why its “unrealistic.” The script writers intentionally wrote it that way and made it to be weird and larger than life. When you watch the featurettes and behind the scenes of the show, the writers wanted to make the new language corny and weird for the sole purpose of comedy and to be “iconic”.

Wardrobe was also another thing brought up. The heathers actually use their main color scheme and they incorporated the heathers to have their own style to reflect their personality. They were smart to make sure that each of them was distinct and that we were able to identify them based on style and wardrobe.

Next point is the representation aspect. Duke was one of my favorites because they made them human (even in this absurd world they built..) they made them relatable. People treated Duke respectfully and like a person rather than a villain. They also deal with the issue of how they use the women’s bathroom and one of the characters was quick to justify that they were perfectly fine and valid in the bathroom.
