Ted Turner, founder of CNN and media visionary, died on May 6, 2026, at the age of 87.
Born Robert Edward Turner III on November 19, 1938, in Cincinnati, he built a groundbreaking media empire. He transformed a small Atlanta TV station into the Superstation WTBS, then launched CNN in 1980 â the worldâs first 24-hour news network. He also created TNT, Cartoon Network, and owned the Atlanta Braves, winning the 1995 World Series.
A passionate sailor, he won the Americaâs Cup in 1977. Later in life, he became one of Americaâs largest private landowners and a major philanthropist, pledging $1 billion to the United Nations and supporting environmental conservation across nearly 2 million acres.
He is survived by his five children â Laura, Teddy, Rhett, Beau, and Jennie â along with grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Services will be held privately.
