This is the only picture I have ever seen of Louis Dumaine. He played with a lot of the early jazz guys but he and his Jazzola 8 recorded a tune in 1927 called “Two wa bac a wa.” It is not an Mardi Gras Indian song, but I think it is the first time a Mardi Gras Indian phrase was used as a song title. Maybe it was the first time a Mardi Gras Indian phrase was used in the world outside that culture. Given it is Carnival Time and everybody’s drinking wine, I am thinking of such things.
