“The city’s landscape is continuous transformation – a nuance of mass produced, yet individualistic buildings forming a whole. Concentrating on the vertical landscape of Toronto, each sequence studies the city through mass, voids, and contour.”
TODO - Concept & Intended Results
By scaling the city’s vertical landscape, it will become visually approachable. The vertical concrete landscape of our city will be turned into a pattern of abstract shapes – representing an undulating, dynamic and variegated grain of the core. This installation will be a visual presentation of a research synthesis of the growth of the Toronto figure ground, revealing that the urban landscape, although an outcome of mass production, is quite varied and multifaceted.
The city’s landscape is continuous transformation – forming a distinct pattern by placing various buildings together. Documenting this motion of growth will be achieved by abstracting the density of the downtown core. Concentrating on the vertical landscape, each sequence explores the nuances of repetitive components individually and as a whole.
Each unique 2-dimensional panel combined, will create a visually complex 3-dimensional study of Toronto. Horizontal-section of the buildings will be layered onto the translucent panels, and these frames will be positioned sequentially to reveal the range in building heights.
This series will evoke the city’s skyscraper evolution into three narratives: mass, voids, and contours. The mass will be presented through contrast of opacity and transparency. Voids will create a visual representation of the air surrounding the structures. The contours will show the outline of the buildings. Working with transparent materials, such as paper, vellum, and plexiglass, this materiality will be used to explore each study of the downtown core.
We are excited to announce that our cart design won the Big Picture award at The Stop's Night Market!!!

Having been the first time we worked together to design and build a cart we are very grateful for being chosen and we're thankful to have had The Stop support us along the way.

Through all the craziness with planning, designing, and fabricating the cart we continued to take each step with an open mind and a sense of humour ☺

Here are some more photos from The Stop's Night Market on Tuesday. So much good food we wish our stomachs had more capacity to be filled. A huge thanks to Chef Scott and The Stop's volunteers for serving up some delicious Fish Cake!
After weeks working in the workshop we have had our ups, downs, and a lot of laughter; we have completed our cart for The Stop's Night Market. Even with the vicious storm it just caused us to build-up more of an appetite for the food-filled evening.
Today we deconstructed our cart and rolled it down the street to a local high school, Central Tech, that specializes in a range of classes such as: woodworking, carpentry, plumbing, culinary, fashion, arts, and so much more.
We decided to donate our cart's plywood, 2x2s and other wood pieces to their woodshop facilities for high school students to use in their future projects. As a graduate of this high school I am very thankful to Central Tech for accepting our donation and a big thanks to Randy for accepting our offer! We salvaged a few pieces to become future DIY projects for the summer and we look forward on continuing to grow our mini herb gardens too!
If you picked-up one of our DIY takeaways from The Stop's Night Market you've received Sweet Basil Seeds! We encourage that you plant your seeds right away to begin your own little herb garden!
Plant the seeds approximately 3mm deep. You can use a jar or even a yogurt container to plant your seeds into. The seeds will sprout within 7-14 days. Avoid over-saturating your soil, we suggest using a spray bottle to water the herbs to avoid damaging the seedlings. The herb will grow to be 30-60cm (12-14") tall within 85 days depending on how much sunlight and water the herb receives.
Once the herb grows to be about 15cm (6") tall it is suggested to pinch the tops to encourage branching. Pick your Sweet Basil any time for fresh use and dry quickly to retain the flavour. Thanks for coming out to The Stop's Night Market and visiting our booth! Happy growing!!

Today was transportation and assembly day onsite in the Honest Ed's parking lot. We've grown and nourished our herbs for the past few months and we have kept the herbs from The Stop well watered and loved for the green wall. It was go time as we assembled the roof, top signage, and green wall but we managed to get the cart constructed safe and sound. (A shout-out goes to Kaitlyn and David for their help at the end!!) We're pumped for tomorrow night!!!
On our second last day in the workshop we used a DIY stencil onto reclaimed wood to complete the menu signage.
We have also completed the statistics regarding the percentage of food bank usage amongst certain groups and within the GTA.
Two more days until the event and we're scurring along finishing off little details.
We collected moss from a local creek to be incorporated into the cart's signage. Here's a preview of what we're aiming to finish the text with.
A week away until the Night Market and we have:
- constructed the roof frame - laser cut the statistics signage - picked up herbs from Wychwood Barns (and been in the process of growing our own herbs at home) - menu signage - cnc the top signage It's going to be a busy week!!! Lots of emotions running through us but we've de-stressed by finding creative ways to use the laser cut letters in a new perspective.

It's been a busy week! We have:
△ painted the counter/frame white △ assembled and attached the 2x2 statistics onto the frame △ constructed the roof frame We can't get ahead of ourselves, there is still lots to do. But now and then we need a little break by seeing if we can "fit" into any new piece!
We have set-in the screw deeper in order to place a wooden dowel ontop of the hole to create a seamless countertop surface. Our basic frame is finished and we've discovered our shelf space can fit one human each!
