Back home. What an adventure. I got this legendary piece of reading to accompany me on my journey and finished the last pages that I left to read after returning home. Prepared myself a cup of coffee from the ingredients I carried with me from the adventure and finished the book. Sucking in inspiration for the future adventures 😉 After finishing the book, I realized that I spent almost the same amount of time touring South Asia as Mr Fogg used to travel around the world. It was one of those moments your imagination and inspiration starts running like a wild horse. This is Thamel. The heart of Kathmandu what comes to where trekkers, hippies and tourists of all sorts gather in, surrounded with local businesses of course. A buzzing part of the city. This is a typical scenery from the street. Westerners strolling the streets, a local musicial dragging his gear around, motor bikes, tuk tuks and people from all walks of life mix up under the fireworks of colourful signs all over. An eagle flying over Kathmandu. This is an image I captured when on a little hike at Shivapuri National Park on the outskirts of Kathmandu. I wanted to share this because of a couple of reasons. First, it sums up well the beauty of the place seen above. This was a beautiful day with slight cloudiness to give a magical feel to it. Second, eventhough there are around 2 million people living in the valley of Kathmandu, you don't see a lot of high rises or any taller buildings for that matter, which makes the infrastructure relatively flat, which I like a lot. All this is due to the fact that the area is one of the most vulnerable what comes to earthquakes. Next to the eagle you see a set of buildings which is covered with green sheets. The eathquake of 2015 (almost exactly two years ago) almost brought them down and since then it has remained like that because they are figuring out what to do with it. A lot of buildings and historical structures were collapsed and destroyed as well at that time. It was a miracle that this set of buildings didn't fall down. This all tells about the forces of nature that we greatly need to respect. After all, we are all merely passing through the natures progress, and such a small part of the whole but we tend to forget that we are visitors to the whole, so we should respect the nature accordingly. I decided that it's time to move on from Mumbai. Plan is to get to Delhi, but not straight away. I want to spend a few days on the way so I figured out the train would be the best option. Good. I'll do it as any self-respecting adventurer would do. Randomly. So, I packed my bags, headed to the street from my guesthouse, stopped the first tuktuk I could on the fly, told the driver to take me to the central train station. When I got there, I got to the first counter I could find, and asked for the first train that would leave and the clerk said it's to Ahmedabad. Perfect, it's at least to a bit towards where I am going to. But "Sir, it leaves in 9 minutes, and you have to get the ticket from counter 36." Ok, that's cool, "Where is counter number 36." "It's in the other building, across the yard." Took all my bags and started running. Like hell. This might take time. Finally I found a counter where I could start explaining which train I should get to. I got everything done with a nice smile and chit chat. Positive attitude, that's the key. That took 1,5 minutes and I heard from the other side of the counter "You better hurry Sir, the train is leaving. Run." Did what I was told. Running to the main hall, trying to locate the right train, found it, ran, jumped in, put my bags down and the train started moving. Perfect. Just that I had no idea what kind of a ticket I had just bought. Quickly I found out it's a general ticket, no seat. Ok, where are these carts? In the other end of the train. Got through the train and found out that there are no places anywhere, except for somewhere between the carts. Standing. 8 hours. Well, it was one of the best train rides I have ever had. We were all packed in the corridors, everywhere. No one could sit who didn't have a seat. No room to sit on the floors, anywhere. Despite, or actually, only because of that we had so much fun during that ride, the people were super cool, very helpful with everything, and when arriving to Ahmedabad I had a good knowledge of where I was going to, main things to do very clear, hotel booked and all settled. What an interesting day again. I decided to take a walk in Mumbai for a few hours. The plan was to see more of the life on the streets. I thought I'd spend like 4-5 hours until the sun would set. I got moving around 2:30 pm. Before that I was just taking it easy and chilling and enjoying the vibe of the city. Well, I thought I'd walk up to Chor Bazaar from South Colaba to photograph the bazaar life. It's around 7 km. While I was walking, I got to watch people playing cricket, talked with people on the streets, took several portraits of people by request and just enjoyed every minute. Same thing continued at the bazaars where I had the chance to photograph people, animals, people with animals, interesting situations and the whole buzz. After that I decided to head to the Chowpatty beach for the sunset and after that I was going to head back to my guesthouse. I should have known better, it didn't go that way. At the beach I got surrounded with people who were interested in what I was doing there (in India in general, but also at that beach), we talked and I was requested again to take a few portraits of people. Well, some of these people were into Hare Krishna and they invited me into one of their temples close by, Sri Sri Radha Gopinath Mandir. I said, of course. What else would I have said ☺️ But I told them I don't have a lot of time since I had scheduled some work for the evening. The visit took almost two hours as I was constantly introduced to new people, activities, sites at the temple, there was even a birthday celebration of some kind of a master. And I got to enjoy one of the most delicious meals that they serve temple attendees. And then my new friends insisted giving me some presents and we had a long good bye talk. Thank you Prem for the gifts 🙌🏼 Most defintely was a nice surprise and definitely worth the time. Bombay. I somehow like that name a lot. This city has been an eye opener. I knew before coming here that I would experience something totally new. I have lived in Beijing for a while so I have an idea of what it is like in a city with a lot of people. But here, it is complitely different. You feel the people a lot more. The people is much more on the streets, not in tall skyscrapers and apartment buildings so much. This city is alive 24/7 like no other I have experienced so far. Well, after strolling around small alleys of really - I mean really - local life, watching kids swim in the ocean playing with all the plastic it carries, eating from some really delicious street food stalls and in general enjoying the city for 24 hours, it's time to stop for some refreshments at a nice joint in Colaba, Bombay. Sri Lanka, I will leave you with this picture. This tells a lot about what the time we had was about. I was able to enjoy your numerous beautiful sunsets, sit at the beach by the great Indian Ocean, listen to the majestic sound of the waves when the sun is setting while having a zip of cold beer. I got to witness some of the most impressive sunrises I have ever seen, all while enjoying your finest coffee. I got to experience the buzz and hustle of Colombo. Enjoyed all the delicious food you had to offer, really. To experience your cooking is such a priviledge. Selfie of the day. What a beautiful day at Madivaru island, which is one of the about 1200 islands in Maldives. It's a part of the Rasdhoo atoll - one of the 26 atolls of Maldives. I was there with a few friends, and when they decided to go snorkling, I decided to snap a quick selfie 😎 The island all alone for myself. Excellent. What is cool about this, is the ocean depth. On the inner side of the atoll (to the right) you get water depths of just below the knees down to 2-3 meter depths. On the outer side (to the deep blue) it gets really deep, really fast. First step to approx 17-20 meters, then fast down to 100 meters and then quickly to depths of 400-500 meters between atolls inside of Maldives. It's an incredible and mesmerizing feeling to stand on the side of the sudden deep and try to think and digest the reality of how small part of the nature you actually are. A face of a happy traveler. After a week in Colombo, Sri Lanka, it's time see the island a bit. This is a good example of some adventurous traveling. I have been thinking for a few days where to go next, and yesterday I thought I'd give a call to a friend who lives in Hikkaduwa, some 100 km south from Colombo. I tried to reach him in January vai email to ask if he would be around when I am here. I was not able to reach him. He lives part of the year in Finland, part in Sri Lanka. Yesterday, I happened to reach him on his Sri Lankan number and he happens to be in Hikkaduwa. Excellent. I just love it when things just click somehow and then there is the next direction like dropped from the sky. We decided and I definitely should get myself there. Hikkaduwa it is then. Now I got an Uber to the bus station, the driver even helped me to find the right bus and took me to it. The bus would be leaving in ten minutes. And happens to be with A/C. And believe me, if I would have gone and wondered around solving the puzzle around this particular bus station with the same outcome, it would have taken a whole lot longer. Again, some good interaction with the universe. And off we go. Adventure 2017 now started. This is the view from the hotel room in Dubai. It tells a lot about the place so far.
