Today I went to my local used bookstore! It’s still quite warm here but I rebelled against the 70 degree weather and wore a blazer. I love this store so much, it has its own cafe, a second floor, and an abundance of vintage books. I could get lost in them! Figuratively and literally. They have all sorts of books, from hardcovers to illustrations and art, from keto diet plans to metaphysics. The store also has a bunch of CD’s cassettes, and vinyl! I wish I lived closer, I would go here all the time if I could.
I have been to the other location, but this one I think I prefer more. To just feel the rigid spines of the hardcovers and to hear the rapid flipping of pages felt so welcoming. At that point, I was already drunk on the pursuit of knowledge and philosophy. I was happy to see that they had sections for Classic authors, such as Virginia Woolf, Oscar Wilde, and George Orwell. They also had individual sections for ancient philosophy that included Plato, Homer, and Aristotle. God, I love old, secondhand books. It’s like a transfer from one individuals experience to another’s. One of the most submissive and easisest form of communication is through a used book. You just feel a certain energy radiating from them.
I was excited to get three books that were at some pretty great prices. First, I got the “Oxford Latin Course: Part One” (11$) in the colored, second edition. I have wanted to get into studying Latin (Blame Donna Tartt!!) and try writing or speaking it one day. There wasn’t many beginner books but thankfully I found this one.
Second, I got “The Metaphysics” by Aristotle (6$) which I have tried reading online but it just didn’t feel right. I’m looking forward to reading this one! It was the only version in the Aristotle section so I was a bit lucky.
Finally, I got “The Iliad” by Homer (4.50$). In English class, I was able to read excerpts of the “Odyssey” which I enjoyed thoroughly, so I decided to get another one of Homer’s works. Plus, it’s in PERFECT condition! For such a low price?! It was too easy not to pass up. My heart feels filled. Just absolutely, indescribably content and joyous. What a successful book trip!
