Tsaatan - The Reindeer People of Northern Mongolia - Part 1

The Tsaatan, or Dhuka, of Northern Mongolia are the last reindeer herders who have survived the test of time. They travel through the mountains bordering Siberia and rely solely on their reindeer for all their basic needs; milk from which they make cheese, their fur for clothing, the antlers for making tools and their meat for food.

The reindeer are used as a means of transporting their belongings from one place to another, where they set up teepees for shelter and make a new home for no longer than 3 months. During the summer, the Tsaatan move to new pastures with plenty of grass for their reindeer to graze on, in the hopes of them storing enough fat for the cold, brutal winters.
