When Rook first finds Cole at the Lighthouse, there will be a short cutscene. Speaking to Cole afterwards triggers this conversation:
Rook: Anything going on I should know about?
Cole: Sometimes.
Rook: Are... You gonna tell me?
Cole: Heavy shoulders. Smiles that slip when no one sees. Questions with no words. You answer without being asked.
Rook: Right. Should've seen that coming.
Cole: I hear the hurt. You answer it. They don't ask for help. I tell you where the silence is loudest.
Rook: So, basic translation, you'll tell me if one of my friends needs me. Is that it?
Cole: Yes.
New Quest: In The Spirit of Compassion
Cole senses the emotional weight carried by those within the Lighthouse.
While he seldom speaks plainly, his observations may reveal when a companion has something important to discuss.
Check in with Cole whenever you return to the Lighthouse after major missions.
If there are no new companion quests available, Cole will say one of the following:
Rook: Anything I should know about?
Cole: They're quieter today. Not empty. Resting.
Rook: Everything alright?
Cole: Enough is.
Rook: Does anyone need me, Cole?
Cole: You should rest. They'll still be here tomorrow.
Rook: Hey, Cole.
Cole: Hello!
When all companions have been recruited, Cole may instead say one of the following:
Manfred is hiding spoons. Emmrich knows. Heβs pretending not to.
Assan ate something Davrin told him not to. Davrin is deciding whether to be angry or impressed.
Bellara lost her notes. Theyβre under the other notes.
Lucanis made coffee. Taash drank it. Neither of them is happy.
Neve knows who moved her chair. Harding doesnβt know Neve knows.
Taash is arguing with the kitchen. The kitchen isnβt listening.
Manfred waved at Spite. Spite waved back. Lucanis wishes they hadnβt.
If a companion has a new quest or conversation available, Cole will say one of the following:
Lucanis
He made coffee. It went cold before he drank it.
He's looking toward Treviso. His feet never left the Lighthouse.
He looks over his shoulder. Habit. Hope. He isn't sure which.
Family is supposed to catch you. Falling hurts more when they don't.

He says your name when you're gone. Softer than when you're there.
He looks for you first. He doesn't know he's doing it.
The demon is quieter when you're close.
He's practicing what he'll say. It never sounds as good when you arrive.
He wants to tell you something. He keeps finding another reason to make coffee first.
Harding
The Stone is quieter than she expected.
She keeps touching the lyrium. It answers. She isn't sure she wants it to.
She misses the roads she used to know.
She's trying to carry mountains with two hands.
She's smiling again. She's checking if it still fits.

She reaches for your hand before she remembers to.
She wants to show you every sunrise. Every one feels new.
She thinks she's changed too much. You haven't looked away.
She keeps saving stories to tell you later.

Broken things are easier to understand than people.
She keeps talking so the silence can't.
She thinks if she fixes enough, this one might hurt less.

Since Cole is apparently living at the Lighthouse now, I feel like we should establish a few ground rules. Mostly because nobody seems entirely sure what he is. βRook
Oh! I have a question! Is he a spirit inhabiting a body, or a body imagined by a spirit? Because those are completely different magical phenomena. βBellara

This may be oddly specific, but thatβs mainly because Iβm trying to see if my headcanon is similar to anyone elseβs.
Does anyone else think Emmrich would be an absolute saint to an autistic Rook, especially a romanced one?
In my own lore, heβs been married to my autistic Rook, Atticus, for decades, and he knows every one of his quirks, triggers, and hyperfixations. While I donβt headcanon Emmrich as autistic as well, I do headcanon him with generalized anxiety disorder, so I feel like he still is a part of the neurodivergent experience and would therefore be understanding despite those diagnoses not existing in Thedas. (You may be wondering why I headcanon GAD specificallyβ his fear of death is the biggest indicator for me; my mom and I both have anxiety and an abnormally intense fear of death is one of our symptoms).
For Atticus specifically, Emmrich is constantly making sure heβs getting a good diet, helping get him to a quiet place when heβs overwhelmed, and helps coax him into bathing when heβs having trouble doing it himself. He also knows that Atticus loves deep pressure when heβs sleeping and they spend most of their nights with Emmrich sprawled on top of Atticus like a weighted blanket. One of the reasons Atticus loves him so much is because neither of them even need to know the word βautismβ for Emmrich to be accommodating and loving about it.
In turn, I like to think Atticus is good at comforting Emmrich when heβs feeling especially anxious. Lots of hugs and kisses, distracting him by rambling about necromancy, making him tea, reading him books he loves.

My ideal vision for the Lighthouse post-VG is as the premier magical academy and research center in Thedas. Anyone is welcome, though its main patrons and student body are Veil Jumpers and the Mourn Watch.
It begins while Rook is trapped in the Fade. Emmrich and Bellara are working around the clock, searching for lost lore and experimenting with new arcane techniques. Myrna and Vorgoth assist whenever they can be spared from the Necropolis. Irelin and Strife are frequent visitors as well, both to offer ideas and resources and to (lovingly) bully Bellara and Emmrich into resting and eating. (Bellara x Irelin reunion perhaps? Emmrich being coaxed to bed by Strife, who holds him and reassures him that his brilliant mind will unravel this puzzle.)
And the intense search for ancient knowledge awakens something in the Lighthouse. The library acquires more seats and a larger table to serve as a workspace. The bookcases expand, and volumes unseen in millennia suddenly reappear. New resources begin appearing in the Necropolis and the ruins of Arlathan as well, as the efforts of the mortals prompt a strange resonance among the quasi-sentient loci of mana.
The resonance remains even once the gods are defeated. Bellara and Emmrich continue to meet regularly at the Lighthouse to discuss new theories. They invite their colleagues to join them and then open some sessions to younger acolytes. Informal discussions become formal classes. An exchange program is devised that sends Mourn Watchers to Arlathan to study ancient elvhen funerary rites and appease the spirits and sends Veil Jumpers to the Necropolis to explore areas previously thought inaccessible. The Caretaker ferries scholars to the spirit marketplace and trains alchemists and runemakers in techniques long lost to time. (Dagna is often on hand to explain the spiritβs more esoteric instructions.)
The Lighthouse expands and expands again, forming dormitories and classrooms and training facilities. Its lights brighten, its furniture acquires cozy cushions and blankets, and its broken statues and staircases reform. And whenever the fire in the dining hall starts to burn low, Bellara and Emmrich call back the surviving members of the Veilguard, and they share a meal and catch up on gossip and laugh and drink late into the night. And by morning, the fire is roaring merrily without receiving a single bit of tinder.

And yeah, getting involved with the Shadow Dragons was a CHOICE (anything tied to Dorian Pavus was a CHOICE, lets be honest).
But not even the Shadow Dragons had seen Rook coming.
βNeve, I just freed like a hundred slaves and now half the Magisterium is really mad at me.β
βNeve, I joined famous author Varric Tethras on a quest to stop a god and now the sky is falling and thereβs at least two more gods.β
βNeve, you know that famous mage killing crow assassin you mentioned? Letβs go get him.β
βAlso he makes coffee and wonderful foods so heβs doubling as our cook nowβ¦yeah I know heβs versed in every poison in Thedas. So what? Eat your porridge.β
And its just getting worse. As they toddle away from the Grand Necropolis of Nevarra, Rookβs eyes are fixed on the back of SENIOR MOURN WATCHER Emmrich Volkarin, because apparently Rook asked βdo you want to join our summer camp?β And the Mourn Watch said: βof course sounds like fun!β
Volkarin is talking excitedly to Bellara like the incredible nerds they are. And Rook is helping the skeleton butler carry what looks like three suitcases and half a library. Because of COURSE they are.
And their eyes remain fixed on the back of Volkarinβs coat. The way Rookβs eyes have been fixed on him all through their wild fight through the Grand Necropolis. A fact that nearly got Rook brained by Venatori several times.
βRook,β Neve says, testing the waters.
The eyes Rook turns to her are as soft as a hallaβs.
βOh Maker,β Neve closes her own eyes against the oncoming headache.
