I think one of the most interesting parts of learning a new language is getting yourself involved in the culture. And for me, one of the most interesting ways is watching movies. With that in mind, I made a list of French movies worth watching :)
Demain Tout Commence
Samuel lives his life without ties or responsibilities, at the edge of the sea under the sun of the south of France, near the people he loves and with whom he works without too much fatigue. Until one of his old conquests leaves him a few months old baby, Gloria: his daughter.
I love how this movie has an unexpected plot twist and how beautiful this story is.
La Famille Bélier
In English: In the Aries family, everyone is deaf except Paula, 16 years old. She is an indispensable interpreter for her parents on a daily basis, especially for the exploitation of the family farm. One day, pushed by her music teacher who discovered her a gift for singing, she decides to prepare the contest of Radio France. A choice of life that would mean for her the remoteness of her family and an inevitable passage into adulthood.
The fact that this movie has deaf-people representation, good songs and is a coming out of age (is that the term?) gets me every time.
Il a dejà tes yeux
Paul is married to Sali. Everything would be fine if they could have a child. Until the day Sali receives the call they have been waiting for so long: their adoption record is approved. He is adorable, he is six months old, his name is Benjamin. He is blond with blue eyes and is white. They are black!
I like how the Congolian family conservatism is explored, contrasting with the liberalism of the French-Congolian couple.
J'ai tué ma mere
Hubert Minel is a brash young man of 17 who does not like his mother at all. He despises her cheesy clothes, the kitschy style and the crumbs of bread that always remain in the corner of her mouth. In addition to these traits, the relationship between the two is based on manipulation and guilt. Confused and divided by a relationship of love and hate that makes him more and more obsessed, the boy lives adolescence that is both typical and marginal, marked by new artistic experiences, friendships, sex, and abandonment.
A quebecois version of “We need to talk about Kevin”, but better imo.
Amour
Anne and Georges, two music teachers, cast a peaceful retreat in their Paris apartment. A happy time, before a small stroke hits Anne. The operation offered to them ended in failure and Anne was soon victim of a second attack. This is the beginning of a painful decline for her and that of a difficult fight for him.
Obviously, you’re going to cry a lot. But it’s totally worh it.
In English: The story of a family of women that life has often jostled, but has managed over time to tame the tumults.
In English: Poland, December 1945. Mathilde Beaulieu, a young intern of the Red Cross responsible for treating French survivors before their repatriation, is called to help by a Polish nun. At first reluctant, Mathilde agrees to follow her to her convent where thirty Benedictines live cut off from the world. She discovers that many of them, who became pregnant in dramatic circumstances, are about to give birth.
In English: François is a young French teacher of a 4th class in an ordinary college deemed difficult of the 20th arrondissement of Paris. He will have to face his pupils: Esmeralda, Souleymane, Khoumba and the others. François does not hesitate to leave the academic framework and push teenagers to their limits in order to motivate them, even if they sometimes take the risk of excess.
In English: A conductor remembers the music teacher who influenced him and goes back into the past. In 1949, Clément Mathieu, professor of unemployed music, was appointed supervisor in a re-education center for minors. Step by step, he will try to introduce his students to music theory and singing.
In English: Philippe Mars, divorced computer engineer, tries somehow to lead a quiet life, between a son college suddenly became vegetarian, a girl obsessed with success, a sister artist painter terribly shameless and an ex-woman who works at TV. The accidental irruption of Jerome, a slightly disturbed colleague, completes transforming his existence into chaos.
In English: A satisfied customer never comes back, that is the motto of the Tuvache house specializing in a singular business: that of suicide. In this shop, one finds indeed everything to put an end to its days, poisons with the pistols, while passing by the ropes, the sabers or the daggers. The business flourishes and, paradoxically, one could say that the Tuvache with the sad mine are happy bosses.
Le Source des femmes
The Women’s Fountain presents a story set in a village between Africa and the Middle East, where women are responsible for fetching water used by families. For this, they need to walk great distances under scorching sun, while their husbands stay at home drinking and playing. One of the villagers is engaged to Leila, a Frenchwoman who has lived in the area for some time. The girl does not accept the tradition and decides to put an end to this, demanding that the men start to get water. Because it is an extremely sexist community, the solution is to make a “sex strike,” which, among radical Islamists, causes many problems.
Un Sac de billes
Two Jewish brothers fled all over France during the German occupation in World War II, trying to find their family again.
Spoiler: You’re going to cry. A lot.
Thank you sm!! Sorry my reply is so late!
