In 1997, ten years after my father’s death, Pat Conroy gave a wonderful speech at the University of South Carolina reminiscing about his experiences as a student of James Dickey. This is one page from Pat’s hand-written text in which he talks about how much my father reminded him, at first, of his father, “The Great Santini.” But Pat loved my father’s writing, and his teaching, even more than he hated his own father’s brutality. — Christopher Dickey
