Rubjerg Knude is one of the most unique areas in Denmark, and it is a fantastic place to explore in all kinds of weather. On top of the 60-meter high sand dune stands a 23-meter tall lighthouse, which is an eternal reminder of times long gone. The lighthouse was decommissioned in 1968 because of blowing sand, which more or less covered it, rendering it invisible from the water. Before it was turned off, it served as a beacon in one of the most dangerous waters surrounding Denmark—Jammerbugten. Today, large parts of the structure are completely covered in sand, but you can still access the tower and see the amazing view from the top. The area around the lighthouse is no less impressive, and it resembles a desert. The blowing sand makes it impossible for plants to gain a foothold, so there is nothing but sand here. Steep slopes descend 60 meters down from the top of the dunes to the sea, and you must tread with care here. On stormy days, the sand will penetrate clothes, and the wind will be almost impossible to move through. Do not let that stop you, because this is an incredible experience in itself. Rubjerg Knude is the ultimate place to experience the rough character of the western coast of Denmark.

This is how you get there:

The path to Rubjerg Knude is simple. But the longer you venture into the area, the more challenging it gets. You park at Fyrvejen and move along the gravel path leading to the lighthouse in the distance. Once you reach the dunes, you can choose to approach the tower or go around the dunes towards the water. The entire area is littered with trails.
