She gazed up at him, thinking it over for a second before nodding briefly, "yeah, of course, maybe, uh, okay… Do you think we should… Not hide but keep it low key for now? Just… Figure out for us how we want to be before we worry about everyone else? That’s a good middle ground, I think?"

  "Low key.." Jakob repeated with a slow nod, smiling "I can work with that, I like that" he leaned in to kiss her again, still playing with her hair. He couldn't usually cool down so quick after a freak out, but he figured it was Dominique's doe eyes that had done the trick.

The moment of silence before he put his arms around her was one of the longest of Dominique’s life. Dealing with anxiety meant her brain was always going a million miles a minute. She rarely slept full nights and she was consistently hyper-aware. But she felt her thoughts go totally empty while she waited for his response… and it didn’t feel much better. She kissed him softly, waiting for her body to stop shaking, “I’d just like to say that I’m a much better debater when I’ve been given time to prepare. Just for the record.”

"I don't doubt your debating powers" Jakob assured her with a smile, reaching forward to brush a strand of hair behind her ear and mutter "sorry for yelling" in a quiet voice, his gaze dropping to the floor.

Dominique jumped at his outburst, her body registering loud noises as something to panic about and she slid of the table. “Hey. I was just joking-” So this was what he was talking about. She felt her pulse starting to race while she tried to force her body back to calm. She wasn’t in danger. She wasn’t. “Stop it!” She took a step towards him, her hands raised slightly, “I’m not. I’m not anything. I’m not above you. Not even close. No one even notices me. And I don’t care. I don’t care what people say about you, I don’t care what they say about us if they see me kissing you, and I can’t remember the last time anyone made me feel like that, so I’m-” She took a shaking breath in, “So I’m giving you the option of walking away if you want to, because it’s yours, obviously, but if you think I don’t want to kiss you just as bad, then you’re an idiot and you probably should just leave. And- and also… also you’re dead wrong.”  No. Not her most eloquent moment. 

He stood wiggling his toes as she talked, still feeling the need to find a way to expel some of the energy he suddenly had. If Dominique wasn't here he'd have punched the wall but she already had an expression like a deer and he didn't want to scare her anymore. Felt horrible that he already had scared her at all. He couldn't help but laugh as her little speech ran out of steam, stepping forward to wind an arm around her waist and press a chaaste kiss to her lips.

Dominique frowned, her eyes narrowing. It didn’t feel like a win, when he conceded like that. In fact, she had a feeling his giving in was more about getting her off his back than anything else. She felt a wave of frustration and took a breath, trying to force it down. “Are you sure?” She had the contrary side of her just waiting to come out, the one that got her into fights,the one that reminded her of Molly, she took another breath until it came out like teasing instead of a challenge. “I was coming around to the idea of my secret boy kissing friend… kind of exciting even.”

He couldn't deal with the up and down of all this."Well fuck what do you want from me?" Jakob asked, a little louder than was entirely necessary as he pushed away from the table to pace up and down, his hands curling into fists and uncurling again because jesus christ he could not loose his temper right now. Not in front of Dominique. "because I know I already wanna kiss you every time I look at you but I also know people think I'm a total fucking loser and you're like an entire ten levels higher than me and... And fuck I don't know, just-" words were hard sometimes. He wanted to punch something. He should leave.

"I think you’re wrong." She wanted to wrap her arms around him, comfort him, somehow, but she wasn’t sure what to say. How to convince him that to her he wasn’t that person at all. "So… the other option is I kiss you… what? Where no one can see? I hope that I manage to find a dark hallway, and the boy I like, and on top of that, pray that no one is around so that I can kiss him? Seriously?" She shook her head, stroking a hand over his cheek, "Don’t ask me to be ashamed of you. I’m not. And I won’t act like I am." 

No one had ever really been ashamed of Jakob except Jakob. But there had never been anyone around to be proud of him, either. It had left him in a strange place. The only adult figure in his life was his waster of a dad, that was only example he had of the type of person he could expect to be. It didn't exactly instil confidence in him. "you can kiss me whenever you'd like too" he gave in with a shrug. She'd figure out on her own soon enough, so why not be selfish a little bit longer "dark hallway or crowded great hall"
