Pyropteryx- “fire-wing.” Coloring page.
Testing the waters for a new coloring book concept based on whacky/fictional dinosaur/bird hybrids (Paleobirds). Not sure yet if I have the desire to begin such a big project nor if the audience is there for such a thing, but I wanted to try some new tricks and refine the style nonetheless.
All 22 coloring pages from the book assembled as a PDF for limitless printing & coloring. Ready to print on letter-sized paper or to be read on a phone, tablet, or computer.
Uhhhh...I kind of forgot this existed until a customer randomly bought one the other day.
For three bucks you can instantly download a PDF of my coloring book and print/color the pages ad infinitum!

That Looming Feeling: Dead Weight
Despite herculean efforts, progress simply can’t be made.
8.5x11 coloring book depicting 22 legendary animals from around the world (Bigfoot, Nessy, Chupacabra and a whole lot more). Each page includes descriptions of creatures habitat, attributes & behavior. Plus, a handy map helps identify where in the world each legend originated. Pages are single-sided to reduce marker bleed and make it easier to detach and display your favorite coloring work.
Today is the final day to order a copy of the new edition of my Cryptozoology themed coloring book before I close shop for the rest of 2016. The latest edition is paperback bound (no more staples!) larger than previous printings, and each page is single sided to reduce marker bleed and allow you to remove pages for display.
I’m really proud of how these turned out. They’ll make a fabulous stocking stuffer, although at this point I can’t guarantee they will arrive before the 25th.

I took a screen shot about every 15 minutes or so while working on the Swarm Angler, the seventh and final piece in my Aphotic Zone.
I’ve decided to end the series here at 7, despite previous posts hinting at 8 or 9 paintings. I estimate this took me about 50 hours to complete based on the number of frames in the animation, which translates to about 4 months time from start to finish considering the constraints of my day job and the distraction of other artistic endeavors. I’ve been happy with each of the weird fish/crustaceans/mollusks that I’ve cooked up, and confident in how my skills have developed. However, I’m anxious to move on to other concepts instead of spending another 8 months or more at the bottom of the ocean. One thing I really look forward to is working once again in oil paint on actual canvas and loosening up a bit from the relatively intense burden of realism I placed on myself for this series. More to follow on this new direction soon, or at least as soon as I get to it.
A bit more on the process shown above for those interested:
As you can see, the vast majority of the work is done in the black and white shading phase. I use the “Real Oils” mixer brush from Kyle Webster’s Megapack brush download. It’s hard to overstate how much these tools have expanded my horizons as a digital artist. I really enjoy watching the image slowly come into focus with increasing detail and complexity and to watch how certain features change over time. Once I’m mostly finished with shading, I set the value layers to multiply (under blending settings) and color on another layer underneath them. This approach can limit the range of color and leads to an overall darker look, which wasn’t a big problem given the setting for the series and how it allowed me to focus on texture and light source. I like to keep each major subject/portion of the canvas on its own layer so that I can manipulate them separately. This is also apparent in how the number of layers increases drastically toward the finishing point of the painting.
The Swarm Angler
Many species of fish and amphibians utilize mouthbrooding, a tactic in which parents gather their offspring inside their mouths to shield them from approaching danger. The female Swarm Angler contorts this ability for a darker purpose. Female specimens grow so large that they remain virtually immobile by the time they reach adulthood. As all energy is diverted toward gaining mass, she sheds her ability to produce light and lure-in prey. Instead, she allows her vibrant offspring to venture out into her small territory, attracting the attention of would-be predators. After a time, she emits a pheromone from the appendage on her snout that signals her children to come home, baiting the curious predators into her cavernous maw. In exchange for unwittingly bringing food to the table, the offspring get their fill of scraps and the relative safety of their mother’s mouth. The sheer quantity of her swarm ensures that enough offspring will survive to establish the next generation, even if the majority are lost in the dangerous game of bait and switch.
Part 7 of my speculative biology paintings that depict imaginary deep sea creatures. Next week I’ll share an animation that shows my process from start to finish. Prints available soon!

Slowly but surely coming into focus. Pretty happy with the texture on this gurnard in the #grisaille layer. The prey in the latest #digitalpainting in my series #aphoticzone. #wip
Value underpainting complete on a small piece that will relaunch an older concept using some new (to me) oil painting techniques. Going to try glazing over the b/w layer to provide muted color, but first need to let this dry for a while. A process remarkably similar to my digital technique. #oilpainting #grisaille #thatloomingfeeling #selfportrait #liquin #tinybrush
