Biography:
Once upon a time, Jake Hawk was a well known actor. He got regular work in both movies and TV shows, appearing often in magazines and web articles. He had a reputation for not taking things seriously and Jake had worked hard for that reputation. He partied whenever he could and refused to ‘grow up’ and settle down. He was extremely vocal about his desire to never marry or have kids, saying either was too much responsibility for an idiot like him.
When the virus outbreak began to spread across the world, Jake recognised the signs. He had been in a zombie movie (The Dead Rise 2. Not heard of it? Probably for the best!) that had a remarkably similar plot to how reality was playing out. Before the virus reached Vancouver where Jake lived, he packed up some necessities and was intent on disappearing into the Canadian wilderness until a vaccine for the virus had been found and distributed.
He was about to leave his home when he heard the cry of a baby from one of his neighbouring apartments. He nearly left without thinking twice about it but he couldn’t in good conscience. Jake followed the noise of the baby’s cry until he found the baby girl, who appeared to be about two years old. There was no sign of her parents. He quickly packed some formula, some diapers, and some other baby essentials, grabbed her stroller, and took the baby with him. He had no clue how to look after a small person like her but he wasn’t prepared to leave her behind. Nope. No way. Maybe he’d find someone along the way more suited to raise a child than he was.
The harshness of the Canadian winter wilderness pushed Jake south and into the US. And something weird was happening: he was getting really protective of the little girl. He had named her Erin and told her stories that probably weren’t appropriate but they made her laugh and that was all that mattered to Jake. Jake never liked the look of any survivors they encountered on their travels so he kept Erin with him. It wasn’t easy but he wasn’t going to endanger her for the sake of his selfishness.
When Jake and Erin were in what used to be Texas, Jake was hunting food for them when Erin wandered off. Jake went into a panic when he realised Erin was missing. However, she hadn’t gotten far. She had found another kid who appeared to be all alone. Cody, aged 12, had been surviving on his own for the last three years after his parents had been killed by zombies. Jake insisted that Cody stay with him and Erin.
Jake, Erin and Cody found three siblings who had also lost their parents in Arkansas. Again, Jake insisted Cassandra, 11, Leo, 9, and Willow, 7, come with him and his other kids because he couldn’t leave them behind. He called his collection of kids his Mighty Hawks (a play on a movie reference none of the Hawks understood but they didn’t argue so the name sticks) and he tried his best to not only protect them but also teach them how to survive.
Recently, Jake had picked up on rumours of the Redwood Community. He has brought his Mighty Hawks to Redwood with the hope of giving them some kind of stability and normalcy amongst the chaos of this post-apocalyptic world. Both Cody and Cass have taken on a lot of responsibility by helping look after the younger Hawks. Jake wants to give them both some of their childhoods back before it’s too late.

Jake whisks Renee away from Redwood for a short while so she can take a break from things.

Jake Hawk
-Jake was still a little unsure if this was going to be a good idea but instead of worrying about that, he chose to lean into the idea that this little trip out of Redwood will hopefully help Renee. She has been through a lot recently and needed some space to take a break. She wasn't going to do that herself so Jake is now stepping in.-
"You ready to go?"
-He gives Renee a smile as he shifts his backpack filled with supplies so it sits more comfortably on his back-
Renee Brandon
-Renee still wasn't sure where they were going or if this was actually a good idea, but Jake seemed pretty adamant. So she packed up a couple necessities and a first aid kit before slinging her bag over her shoulder- Yeah, I think so....where are we going?
Jake Hawk
"You'll see soon enough. It'll only take us about half an hour to get where we're going."
-Jake, holding his bow in his dominant hand, just in case, motions with his other hand which direction they'll be heading-
"I promise to get you back before sundown."
Renee Brandon
-Renee nodded and looked back towards her place. It was one of Andy's first times left alone with the boys and while she knew he'd be okay, she still worried just a bit- Alright, alright.
Jake Hawk
-Jake can see Renee is still stuck in her thoughts instead of relaxing. But he allows it for now, given she's leaving Redwood and her boys for a short while.-
"You OK? What's on your mind?"
Renee Brandon
Yeah, I'm okay. -the response is so automatic she doesn't really realize it- It's Andy's first time alone with the boys. I guess I'm just nervous.
Jake Hawk
-Renee quickly follows up her automatic answer with more information, preventing Jake from using their safety word so soon into their trip.-
"That's perfectly understandable. Andy does have the support of his siblings and the rest of the town if he needs it."
Renee Brandon
Yeah, you're right. I think it's just the mother's instinct about leaving your kids for so long with someone new. I mean, he's their dad but he hasn't been alone with them yet. Hopefully it's not overwhelming.
Jake Hawk
"Yeah but I bet the boys are looking forward to some quality time with their dad. That's gotta be good for all three of them in fact, right?"
Renee Brandon
They are, especially Oliver. He was still really little the last time he saw Andy. I had to remind him that dad is still healing and might not be able to do everything he wants to do just yet.
Jake Hawk
"But right now, they get to spend time together and create new memories."
Renee Brandon
-Renee smiled as she walked along Jake- That they do. You should have seen his face when he saw Andy for the first time. I don't think I had ever seen him so happy. -Renee hummed happily as she recalled Oliver's face until she realized what she was talking about- We can not talk about this if you don't want.
Jake Hawk
Jake gives Renee a small smile-
"I appreciate that but this is important to you. They're your family after all, right?"
Renee Brandon
Yeah, they are. -she nudges him- Oliver and Henry spent the whole day drawing pictures and even handmade a banner for him. Oliver basically cleared the couch the second Andy walked through the door. Henry was a little shy at first but he enjoyed bedtime. Andy got to read them their bedtime story, although Henry definitely didn't fall asleep. He was a little too excited to sleep.
Jake Hawk
-Despite a bitter taste of jealousy burning at the back of his throat, Jake smiles as Renee talks more about Andy and their kids. He ignores the jealousy, deeming it unwarranted and instead focuses on the positive of Oliver and Henry getting their dad back-
"Some bedtime stories stir up my kids to the point of them not sleeping. Anything that involves dragons gets Erin way too excited for sleep."
Renee Brandon
Oh yeah, I try to steer clear of dragons. The library had a copy of How to Train Your Dragon and I thought it would be a good idea to show the boys and now, Henry is absolutely infatuated with Toothless.
Jake Hawk
"Henry has good taste! Toothless was Leo's favourite for a long time. Leo reckons he's now too old for those kind of stories but he still has a copy of it in his room. Don't tell him I told you that!"
Renee Brandon
-Renee laughed as she pretended to zip her lips together- My lips are sealed. Yeah, Henry loves Toothless but the problem is he'll see black cats and instantly think they're the dragon and try to bring the kitty home. Pretty sure I had to apologize to Mayra about Henry trying to catnap her kitty multiple times.
Jake Hawk
"So what you're saying is Henry should get a black kitty for Christmas?"
Renee Brandon
-Renee laughed as she shrugged- I'll make you a deal, Jake. If you can miraculously find a black kitty for Henry, you are more than welcome to give him one for Christmas.
Jake Hawk
"Got it. One black cat for Henry for Christmas. Just don't tell my kids because they've been bugging me for a pet of some kind for weeks!"
Renee Brandon
Well if you're getting Henry a black cat you're going to need to get Oliver something too. Can't have you playing favorites.
Jake Hawk
"What does Oliver want then?"
-They came across a particularly thick growth of bushes. Rather than go around it, Jake pulled some of the branches back to give Renee enough space to walk through.-
"After you."
Renee Brandon
Well, Oliver wants a horse. He so very much wants to be a cowboy. -Renee was getting ready to go around the bushes when Jake parted it- Where are we going?
Jake Hawk
"You're gonna need to talk to Cass about Oliver's present in that case. Horses hate me!"
-Jake follows Renee through the overgrown bushes and lets the branches he held to one side fall back into place behind him-
"You'll see soon enough. Shouldn't take us much longer to get there."
Renee Brandon
All of the horses are too big for him. I'll tell you what, though, if you get him a cowboy hat or something, he'll be the happiest little boy. -she walks through the bushes as he pushes them away, being mindful not to get snagged on any- So secretive.
Jake Hawk
"Well, I kinda promised not to tell anyone about the place we're going. Hence the secrecy."
Renee Brandon
-Renee looked back at him with a quizzical yet intrigued sort of look- Isn't taking me there breaking that promise, Jake?
Jake Hawk
"Yeah but I figured you're worth it." -the words are out of his mouth before he thinks about it. But at least it was the truth.- "I trust you not to get me into trouble!"
Renee Brandon
-Renee's face flushes and her smile turns less mischievous and more sweet and endearing. There wasn't any point in hiding that, especially from him- I won't get you in trouble. Promise.
Jake Hawk
-he notices the flush in her cheeks and how her smile changes. He really shouldn't try to read too deeply into this but he can't help himself. For the time being, he nods in acceptance of her promise. He bumps his hip against hers as they continue walking-
"Good, thank you. See, I knew I could trust you!"
-Up ahead of them in the distance, the low rumbling sound of falling water can be heard. They're getting close to their destination-
Renee Brandon
-she stumbles a bit and laughs as she bumps right back into him- Course you can trust me, Jake. -she hears the waterfall and she looks to Jake with a sort of excited disbelief before stepping closer and closer and only stopping when the waterfall comes into view- Wow.....this place is beautiful....
Jake Hawk
-He grins back at her when she realises where they're headed. He lets her go up ahead of him to reach the waterfall first. As she admires the view, he stands next to her, paying more attention to her than the beautiful scene in front of them.-
"Knew you'd love this place."
Renee Brandon
-Renee was aware of Jake standing beside her but she was too enamoured by the view to notice that he was staring at her. She only realized that when she turned and looked at him- You were right. I can't remember the last time I went and saw a waterfall like this.
Jake Hawk
-when Renee looks at Jake, he snaps his eyes forward to try and hide how much he had been staring at her. He knew he had been caught but he wants to try and pretend differently for the sake of his pride.-
"Come on. Let's find a spot to sit. I brought some food so we can have a picnic."
Renee Brandon
-Oh Renee had caught him staring and the way he tried to hide that fact was adorable. She laughed as she took his hand and gave it a squeeze- Thank you for this. -she let go of his hand as she walked towards a flat looking area and lowered her bag onto the ground before sitting and leaning against it- Picnic, huh? Don't tell me you got sandwiches in there.
Jake Hawk
-He tries not to think too much about how his heart skipped a beat when she held his hand and instead focuses on putting one foot in front of the other as he follows Renee over to the flat looking area.-
"What if I do have sandwiches in here?"
-He asks with a cheeky looking grin. Before sitting on the ground, he puts his bow and bag down. Once he's sat down, he makes sure his bow is close enough for him to grab quickly in case of emergencies. He opens his backpack and pulls out a couple of squashed looking peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
Renee Brandon
Well, if you have sandwiches, I will be pleasantly surprised. -she tucks her hair back behind her ear so that it's out of her face and watches him sit down. Her weight shifts a little as she curls her legs to one side and when she sees the sandwiches she laughs a bit- Alright, I am pleasantly surprised. -she's laughing as she takes one from him-
Jake Hawk
-He laughs as Renee takes one of the sandwiches from him-
"I figured if I brought food, you'd stay a bit longer and, y'know, actually take a break for yourself for once. Instead of rushing back to town and back to work."
Renee Brandon
-Renee shot him a look but it wasn't as fierce as with that smirk on her face- I'm not that bad.
Jake Hawk
"Right, yeah. You're not exhausted and close to running yourself ragged at all."
Renee Brandon
-she laughs and playfully nudges him with her palm- That sounds like a normal Tuesday. -she laughs as she takes a small bite of her sandwich-
Jake Hawk
-Jake takes a bite from his sandwich and laughs quietly- "Am I gonna have to effectively kidnap you every time you need a break?"
Renee Brandon
You know, you just might. -she manages to swallow her sandwich before she laughs again- I never really had breaks growing up. I was either taking care of my sisters or going to school or doing sports to earn scholarships for college. And then med school didn't allow for breaks or parties. Hospitals, you were almost always on call and then Oliver came along.....I'm pretty sure I've been going non stop since I was a kid.
Jake Hawk
-Jake listens as Renee describes her life so far. He gives a whistle when she finally finishes her list- "Yeah, definitely kidnapping you for future breaks. You ever heard of the phrase: can't pour from an empty cup? I know I'm coming at this with a much more lax work ethic than you and I truly admire your determination to help as many people as possible. But you gotta look out for number one a little more, no?"
Renee Brandon
I do look out for number one, although both Oliver and Henry are number one because I can't choose favorites. -she was hard on purpose but in a way, she wasn't lying. Her boys would always come first, no matter what- Well if you do, let me know ahead of time so I can plan appropriately.
Jake Hawk
-Jake rubbed his hand over his face to hide the brief expression of frustration. Of course Renee's kids should come first but that wasn't the point he was failing to make. But he wasn't here to argue with Renee since that wasn't going to be relaxing for either them-
"Got it. Due notice will be given prior to each kidnapping."
Renee Brandon
-Renee laughed softly before taking a bite of her sandwich- Just gotta make sure the boys have someone to watch them. -she playfully nudged him- Thank you for this, Jake.
Jake Hawk
-He puts on a smile as she nudges him- "You're welcome. Although I might have to think of other ways to get you to relax since we won't be able to come out here each time I 'kidnap' you."
Renee Brandon
Why not? -Renee leans back on her hands as she looks at the waterfall- I kind of like it out here. It's quiet and there's something relaxing about a waterfall.
Jake Hawk
"No one else is supposed to know about this place for one." -Jake took a bite of his sandwich, gave it a couple of chews before continuing- "And for two: we might not always get to leave Redwood. Like if we go into a lockdown situation or something. Not that I'd be trying to force you into taking breaks during such a time but you never know!"
Renee Brandon
-Renee had been watching the waterfall for a minute, just taking in the view of it all. She was smiling but it did soften just a bit when she looked back at Jake- Yeah, there's that...-she takes a deep breath- I'd like to think something like that won't happen, but I guess that's just the world we live in now, huh?
Jake Hawk
"Gotta make the most of the now, right?" -Jake says, casting a weighted look at Renee before forcing himself to look away, reminding himself she was off-limits. If he was going to make the most now, he would've pulled her into his arms and... The rest of that was only going to torture him so no point in finishing that thought.-
Renee Brandon
Something like that, yeah. -she felt the guilt settling in her stomach, although she wasn't sure what she felt the most guilty about right now - that she was spending time with Jake instead of Andy, she was enjoying being with Jake, she hadn't given Jake an answer when she was sure she knew the answer or the thoughts she was currently having but didn't think it was good to mention- You know you're amazing, right?
Jake Hawk
-In the time it takes for Renee to consider whatever thoughts she's having, Jake finishes his sandwich. He wipes his hands on his trouser legs before planting his hands on the rock behind him and leaning back, his legs now stretching out in front of him. When her compliment comes, he's not expecting it and so he blinks at her a couple of times before softly laughing-
"Yeah I know but I like hearing you say that."
Renee Brandon
-she looks at her half eaten sandwich and sets it aside on her pack. Not that she wasn't enjoying the sandwich, rather she just wanted her hands free before she fiddled with it and dropped it on the ground- I mean it, Jake. You are. I know things have been hard and weird and you had every right to move on from everything. I wouldn't have blamed you if you did. And it sounds selfish but I'm really glad you didn't. -she pinched her lips together as she watched his reaction to see if he was maybe getting at what she was very badly suggesting-
Jake Hawk
-Jake listens as Renee talks, his eyes narrowing just briefly as he considers what she is saying (or not saying in this case). He pushes off his hands so he can sit up straighter since this was getting serious and he needs to pay attention. Or else he could screw this up and finally lose whatever shot he has with Renee-
"I nearly did. Move on, I mean. I thought about it, even kinda fooled around with someone else. But it wasn't the same. They weren't you so... Yeah. Back to waiting to see if you might choose me."
-He doesn't look at her as he talks, unsure if saying all of this is the right thing to do. But if she is going to try and be honest with him, he should at least do the same for her.-
Renee Brandon
-did she feel kind of jealous that he had fooled around with someone else? Yeah, a bit, and she couldn't help it. which should have been indication enough that there was no point in holding it in anymore- Well, I don't think you have to wait for long. -she was picking at her boot laces- I still need to tell Andy, but I wanted you to know first, even though I don't know how things are gonna work out and it might still be weird, but.... -she was at a loss for words and she laughed at how awkward this was sounding- You get what I'm saying, right?
Jake Hawk
-Jake doesn't mean to hold his breath as he watches Renee fiddle with her boot laces but he does anyway. Because is this finally it? The very thing he had been waiting for? Pining for, even? He wants to jump to his feet and scream with joy at the sky above his head but he doesn't. Renee hasn't actually said the words he wants to hear out loud yet. He does, however, reach over and put his hand on her back. A tentative motion, as if he's testing the waters with her-
"I think so. But in the interest of being all above board before I start making all kinds of wild assumptions: you've made your decision and it's gonna be you and me together. But you still gotta talk to Andy. Right?"
Renee Brandon
-Renee is very, very aware of the fact that she hasn't flat out said what she's wanting to say because she doesn't know exactly how to say it. Well, she does, but she wants to say it the right way and every way seems awkward and wrong. His hand on her back actually relaxes her and she looks into his face. A smile falls across her face and she nods- Yeah, Jake, that's what I mean. You and me.
Jake Hawk
-Jake just... grins back at her. Hearing her say those words, you and me, out loud was what he had been waiting to hear from her for so long. His patience was finally paying off. There was still work to be done for both of them as they went forward but at least now they are actually going forward together. He leans in and places a kiss on her shoulder. Does he want to kiss her properly? Fuck yeah but it's not right for him to do that yet, not until she talks to Andy first.-
"At the risk of ruining the moment, can I say 'fuck yeah'? Because I really wanna say that!"
Renee Brandon
-That stupid, dopey, adorable grin on his face makes her heart melt just a little. She half expected him to lean in and kiss her and boy she knew she wanted to as well, but she knew she owed it to Andy to discuss things with him first before she did anything physical. But still, he kisses her shoulder and she takes that with a laugh and a nod- Go ahead and say whatever you want, Jake.
Jake Hawk
-He threads his arm around her as he shuffles himself to sit up close to her. He's not going to kiss her, he's not, but he is going to sneak in a snuggle if he can. He just wants to feel Renee nestled against his body for a little while before they need to head back to Redwood. When she gives permission, he gives her another one of the grins he saves just for her before pumping his fist in the air-
"Fuck yeah!"
Renee Brandon
-his arm appears around her and she smiles while scooching closer to him as he moves in closer to her. Why not, right? It was just the two of them out here and she had finally told him she wanted him. There was no harm in leaning against him and being cuddly together, right? But she does lean away as he pumps his fist into the air and she laughs. A genuine, heartfelt, full laugh- You are ridiculous.
Jake Hawk
"Yes, yes I am. Thought you had picked up on that already."
-Jake declares that proudly. If Renee couldn't tell, Jake's demeanour has become more relaxed, as if all is right in the world for him now. It wasn't: he had 5 kids to worry about, zombies were a continuing issue and winter was closing in fast. But for now, everything was as good as it could ever be and he was so grateful.-
Renee Brandon
I did, but I just wanted to remind you. -this feels good. It feels right. Like how things were before Andy reappeared in town. Almost every single stressor in her life seemed to disappear as she enjoyed the moment with Jake. Just the two of them and nothing else- And I wouldn't have you any other way.
Jake Hawk
"That's really good, especially that last part."
-He really wants to lean in and kiss her but he doesn't. He can't do that to Andy. He's already done enough to mess with that man's life without adding to it all. For now, it is enough for the two of them to sit together, their bodies nestled together as they watch the waterfall.-
"Thank you, Renee. Genuinely. Thank you."
Renee Brandon
-Renee's laugh quiets down to more of a hum as she leans into him. If Jake is trying to hide the fact that he wants to kiss her then he's doing a bad job because she can see it and honestly, she wants to too, but she owed it to Andy to at least give him the head's up about them before they started showing it. But she did rest her head on his shoulder and interlock their fingers because why not? But she does look up at him with surprise in her smile- For what?
Jake Hawk
-Jake looked down as Renee threaded her fingers with his. A faint smile appeared on his face at how natural this all felt to him. In previous relationships (if you could even call them that!), this kind of affection wasn't easily given from Jake; his heart just wasn't in it. Obviously it was entirely different with Renee.-
"For choosing me. For being you. For putting up with my dumb shit. For countless other things you do to make everything better. Thank you."
Renee Brandon
-Renee smiled up at him and felt a warm color flooding her face- You don't have to thank me for that, Jake.
Jake Hawk
-He nodded before smiling at the sight of her blushing cheeks-
"OK, fine, but I'm gonna do it anyway. What are you gonna do? Stop me?!"
Renee Brandon
I could certainly try. -she was laughing, although her thoughts on how to stop him were maybe not the best ideas until she had a talk with Andy-
Jake Hawk
-Jake was having very similar ideas and also had the same mindset of not following through with any of them until after Renee talked with Andy-
"I feel like that's something we can figure out later, huh? So I won't push it. But when I can push it? Phew! So much of you stopping me!"
Renee Brandon
-The blush that was already in her face burned a bit more because obviously he was tuned in to the same wavelength she was. So instead she laughed and playfully nudged him- So much, huh?
Jake Hawk
-He laughed as she nudged him.- "So much stopping that I won't even know how to start up again. It won't be a permanent thing but yeah, for at least ten minutes, I'll stop."
Renee Brandon
Oh, ten minutes? -she laughed as she leaned away from him just to give him a teasing, incredulous look- Just ten minutes?
Jake Hawk
"Yeah ten minutes minimum. Maybe more. I mean, we'll find out eventually but my prediction until proven wrong is ten minutes." -He laughing, his words punctuated with bursts of more laughter.-
Renee Brandon
-Renee's face is red from laughing and just thinking of being with Jake. She almost wanted to rush home to have that conversation with Andy but she also didn't want to cut short their date- Alright, tiger, I'mma hold you to that.
Jake Hawk
"Tiger? Oh, I like that." -Jake laughed, trying not to get too caught up in how much he liked seeing Renee blush and laugh and joke like she was now. Despite wanting to keep the conversation upbeat, Jake frowned as the next words escaped from his mouth before he could stop them.- "Do you know what you're gonna say to Andy?"
Renee Brandon
-This was such a nice breath of fresh air and she really was enjoying herself fully with Jake. She didn't want this to end, but at the mention of Andy her smile faltered just a bit and she leaned into Jake- I don't know. Probably something along the lines of I love him and I will always love him, but I also love you and I'm not the same woman he married... -her cheeks blushed as she realized what all she had confessed and she avoided looking anywhere but at Jake's face-
Jake Hawk
-As she leaned into him, he draped his arm around her shoulders. He resisted the temptation to pull her any closer, knowing they were already treading a very fine line as it was. But then Renee said what she did and Jake thought time had stopped-
"Wait. What?"
-She was avoiding looking at him but he cupped her face and made her look at him-
"Run that second to last thing past me one more time so I can know for certain what you just said."
Renee Brandon
-Renee had almost hoped that he hadn't heard what she said and could gloss right on past it, but obviously he had and she felt his hand on her face and how it was turning her to look at him. She bit the inside of cheek as her eyes caught his. Well, she couldn't deny it now, right?- I....I love you, Jake.
Jake Hawk
"Holy fucking shit."
-Those words were definitely out of his mouth before he could stop them. He had to sit there, processing what Renee has said and figure out his genuine response, not the curse-filled knee-jerk one.-
"Why?"
-OK, that was also a follow-up knee-jerk reaction to her declaration. He shook his head as he tried to regain control over his dumb mouth-
"Wait. Don't answer that last one."
-God, he wanted to kiss her, have that action tell her all he needed to say. He had never been in love until he met her so he had never said those words to someone before, besides his kids. He told them he loved them all the time. But that was a completely different situation. With Renee, it was all unknown and therefore terrifying. It was also sublime and what he wanted more than anything.-
"I- Yeah, I love you too."
Renee Brandon
-that reaction seemed so on brand for Jake that she just had to laugh, albeit it was definitely nervously. The entire time she waited for him to say something back she felt like time had literally frozen and she was wondering if there was maybe a way to recover in case this had just done a little too far. His question as to why had her heart seemingly drop because that, while she did know and could answer, was maybe opening the can of worms too much and could really backfire in her face but he followed it up and she breathed out- It's awkward, right? I made it awkward. We can pretend.... -but then he said it back and her words died on her tongue. Instead she smiled a real, genuine, relieved smile- Really?
Jake Hawk
"Yeah, really really."
-He laughed then, all of relief that he had finally admitted that to himself and to the woman he loved. Because of their self-imposed rules of not getting intimate until Renee had talked to Andy, Jake resisted the urge to kiss her and instead rested his forehead against hers.-
"Only took me 45 years to fall in love but I finally did it!"
Renee Brandon
-His laughter was infectious and she couldn't stop herself from laughing. Especially his little proud accomplishment at the end- Well, it's never too late to do something. -She looks up into his eyes- I'm just sorry it was the most complicated person you had to fall in love with.
Jake Hawk
"I'm not sorry. Not in the slightest."
Renee Brandon
-Renee laughs as she loses herself in his gaze. Damn did she want to kiss him and it was so tempting. His lips were right there- I really want to kiss you right now.
Jake Hawk
-And he really wanted to kiss her too. But he knew they probably wouldn't be able to stop at just one kiss.-
"Talk to Andy, then we can kiss."
Renee Brandon
You drive a hard bargain, Jake. -She ends up pulling away but just because if they stayed like that any longer she was gonna kiss him-
Jake Hawk
-It hurt when she pulled away, taking her warmth with her but Jake knew it was for the best.-
"It will be worth it, I promise."
Renee Brandon
Oh, of that, I have no doubt. -She does reach out and take his hand. She could settle for that soft touch for now-
Jake Hawk
-He sits back now, knowing it really is for the best for now. He smiles as she takes his hand-
"The Hawks are gonna freak when we tell 'em."
Renee Brandon
-Renee laughs as she leans back and stares at the waterfall- I'm not sure how the boys are going to take it. I know before Andy got here they were happy I was happy, but now their dad is back so.... hopefully they're not too mad.
Jake Hawk
-Guilt bubbled in Jake's stomach, threatening to ruin this wonderful moment for him-
"I mean, they were part of the prank to lock us in the same room during Prom. I know things have changed drastically since then but still."
Renee Brandon
That they were and Henry absolutely loves you. Oliver, too, of course. You're Inspector Bulbasaur.
Jake Hawk
-Jake wanted to ask if being Inspector Bulbasaur was going to be enough when the same guy is the reason why Mommy and Daddy aren't together anymore but he figured that was too big a question to unpack now- "The Hawks all adore you. But that ain't a hard thing to do since you're so fucking adorable."
Renee Brandon
-Renee laughed- No, the Hawks are adorable and you do an amazing job with all of them.
Jake Hawk
-Jake laughed too- "They don't make it easy for me, that's for sure. But I think every parent has that, no matter how many they have."
Renee Brandon
Well, they gotta keep you on your toes. I think it's a silent pact between all kids. Never make it easy.
Jake Hawk
"Just you wait until yours are teenagers. I thought they'd be easier somehow but they're not."
Renee Brandon
I don't want to think about that. They're still my little boys and I want to keep them that way for as long as I can.
Jake Hawk
"Maybe your boys will be different. My teenagers were already teenagers when I found them. The incredible levels of sarcasm and sass were already installed!"
Renee Brandon
I'm hoping for that. Since they were born I wanted them to grow up to be respectable gentlemen, although I think the whole rebellious teenager thing is something everyone has to experience at least once....I just hope when they do get to that age they don't try something stupid like sneaking out of town.
Jake Hawk
Jake blew out a breath. "Yeah, I'm waiting for the day, or more likely night, Cass gets escorted back to the house by security for trying to sneak out. She's the most likely to try, that is until Erin gets older."
Renee Brandon
"Doesn't that terrify you?" She knew that their roles were different in town and he spent more time outside the walls than she did but still, he knew what was out here.
Jake Hawk
"I'm scared shitless about it." He didn't bother to sugarcoat it. Renee was one of the very few people he could be honest about this kind of thing. "The kids know the risks of going out of Redwood but Cass is the kind of person to do her own thing, especially at the moment. She doesn't want to listen to me warning her about the risks. She wants to see the risks for herself and make up her own mind. I think the only reason why she hasn't tried anything yet is because she'll have to face the Council if she gets caught."
Renee Brandon
Renee listened to him before rubbing between his shoulder blades. "Have you thought about taking her out yourself so she's with you?"
Jake Hawk
Jake managed a small, tight lipped smile as Renee rubbed his back. He leaned slightly in towards her. "I was thinking of asking someone like David to take her out. If she's not gonna listen to me but insistent on going on, I want her with someone I trust. I trust David. But that can only happen if he agrees to it."
Renee Brandon
"David, huh? Well, I mean, he is super serious and watchful. I could see him being good to take her out and see what it's like out there. It might be funny, too."
Jake Hawk
The weight on his chest felt as if it was ever so slightly lighter now. Talking about Cass to Renee had helped and Jake was grateful for that. He gave her a smile that communicated that for him without the use of more words. "I'll talk to him when we get back to town. Speaking of," Jake's expression took on a regretful shadow. "We better head back soon."
Renee Brandon
Renee noticed the fading light and nodded. "Yeah, you're probably right," she muttered as she pushed herself up to her feet. "Thank you for this, Jake. I really needed it."
Jake Hawk
Jake packed up their picnic, making sure to leave no trace of them having been there behind them. He got to his feet and pulled his backpack on. "You're welcome." He gave her a smile and held out his hand to her to hold as they walked back to town.
Renee Brandon
Renee was double checking that they had everything and covering their marks. She slid her bag on her back just as he held out his hand. Renee's smile only grew as she took his hand and let him lead the way.
Jake goes to see Cole to say thanks before it's too late.
@colcreznik
Cole Reznik
-he was getting bored. naturally. being stuck in a jail cell with nothing to do could that do. now cole knew and understood what it was like for the inmates to the prisons he worked at. tapping his fingers against the wall his back was leaned against to the beat of a song stuck in his head, he heard the precinct door open- I hope that's you, Renee. Anyway you can fetch me a book or art supplies to pass the dying time? -once the person came to view, he realized it wasn't renee- Oh, hey Jack.
Jake Hawk
"Hey Mole," Jake replied back with a smile. "Sorry, I haven't got a book or anything. Just lunch." He held up the paper bag he had brought with him from the Community Centre. He put the bag into the tray in the cell door for Cole to take whenever he was ready. "Dumb question but how're you doing?"
Cole Reznik
-cole smirked at his new name - might as well. he then shrugged to answer jake's question- Living the dream, Jack. Living the dream. -he moved toward the door, happily taking the bag- This wouldn't by chance be a medium rare prime rib with loaded fries? I used to think about what my last meal would be and I think that would be it.
Jake Hawk
"Unfortunately, no. No prime rib or fries. It's boar steak and root veggies. I would say close your eyes and imagine it's the same but it's really not. Sorry."
Cole Reznik
It's whatever. Thanks anyway. -cole dropped the bag to the bench before facing jake- Whaddya doing here?
Jake Hawk
He leaned against the cell bars, his arms loosely crossed. "Came to say thank you for doing what you did with Renee. Wish it didn't cost you as much as it has done though."
Cole Reznik
Oh, come on, man. -cole chuckled, shaking his head as he took a seat- I'm the same fucker who planned on making a move on your girl if that damned biter hadn't come out of nowhere. There's no need to thank me. I'm not a fucking hero. Thanks for the food but, you ain't gotta be here.
Jake Hawk
Jake wasn't so much a fan of Coke hitting on Renee and guessed that was what caused the slap he saw. But he wasn't going to dwell on that now. "No, I don't have to be here but I am anyway."
Cole Reznik
-he folded his arms across his chest, letting out a sigh- Listen, I got Lord knows how many more hours left of this shit, and I don't wanna spend it playing ring around the rosie so - just say your thank yous and get shit out.
Jake Hawk
Jake narrowed his eyes slightly, weighing up his options here. "Alright. Thank you for saving the woman I love. I know there's no way I can repay what you did, even if you were being a slimy piece of shit beforehand. So yeah, thank you."
Cole Reznik
-cole let out a loud bellow of laughter, putting a hand on his stomach- Slimy piece of shit. That's a new one. Bravo. And you're welcome. Just make sure you fight for her. Life's too short not to do or say the things you want.
Jake Hawk
Jake cracked a grin as Cole let out a burst of loud laughter. There was no way for Jake to repay Cole for what he did but at least he made him laugh before... Yeah, before. "Oh I plan on fighting for her," he said. "She knows this already but I'm in it for the long haul. Even if the long haul ain't that long because-" he motioned in the air to indicate the near endless reasons of why life was not guaranteed to last all that long "-reasons!"
Cole Reznik
Good. Take it easy, Jake. Hold 'em close a little longer even if they fight you. -of course he meant the children jake had taken in, since cole wasn't able to do it himself with his own son- Now get outta here. No good spending your time here.
Jake Hawk
Nodding as Jake got to his feet, he was suddenly aware that this would likely be the last time he'd see Cole alive. And yet he was at a loss of what else to say to the doomed man. Anything his brain tried to cobble together didn't feel big enough for this moment. Instead, Jake gave Cole a salute before walking away.
Jake left the precinct and went back to his house. It was tempting to seek out Renee but he knew how busy she was with a new influx of patients so he went home instead.
"Hey Pops," Cody said as Jake let himself in. "You ok? You look kinda pale?"
"Yeah, I'll be fine," Jake muttered before pulling Cody into a big hug, the same kind of hug Cole wouldn't be able to give his own son ever again. After a long moment, Jake let go and gave Cody a sad looking smile. "Wanna help me with dinner?"
how tall are you? what's your zodiac sign (and do you think it suits you)? what languages do you speak? do you play any instruments?
"I'm surprised you didn't also ask what my favourite dinosaur is (it's stegosaurus) or if I could only eat one type of cookie forever, what would it be (Oreos).
"Onto your actual questions! I'm 6'2". I'm a Scorpio, which suits me because scorpions are cool. I speak English and maybe enough Spanish to order a beer. And I tried to play guitar to impress girls when I was a teenager. Long story short: it didn't work!"

"I think you already know the answer to that, Ikelypuff. Actually I think most of the town already does but anyway. Yes, I have wanted someone I can't have. Thank you for your question."

In which Jake and Renee get locked up by their kids during the Redwood Prom.
@reneebrxndxn
Jake
-It wasn't like Jake had been waiting all night to see Renee at the Prom but really, that was exactly what he had been doing. Sure, he had socialised with other Redwoodians and he was having a good time. But he really wanted to see Renee, all while trying to not seem like that was who he was waiting for. Dealing with the Hawks helped. He was currently following Leo who really wanted to show his Pops something; that something being Renee.-
"Hey."
-Jake said to Renee as Leo said something about needing to find snacks, almost like he had planned this.-
"You look amazing."
Renee Brandon
-after finally getting out of the stupid supply closet, Renee had intended to go back to the prom and try to enjoy herself but opted to hang out in the hall outside of it for a moment to compose herself. She was leaning against the wall, steadying herself when she heard Jake. Her head shot up and she looked over just as Leo disappeared- Hey. -she pushed off the wall a bit to stand up straighter- Thanks, although I don't know if that's completely true right now. You look good... -he really did- ....are you having fun at the prom?
Jake
-He smiled as she complimented him, her opinion meaning more than anyone else's in his mind. He glanced back at the main room of the Community Centre where people mingled and danced-
"Yeah. So far this Prom has been way more fun than my previous one. How about you? You
having a good time?"
Renee Brandon
Oh, you know, it's prom. It has it's ups and downs. The boys are having fun and everyone else seems to be enjoying themselves, so that's good. -she follows his gaze into the main room before looking back at him- I take it the Hawks are enjoying themselves too. I've heard a lot of laughing children tonight.
Jake
-he noted how she didn't really answer his question but he decided to leave it where it was for now. It's too early in the conversation to bring out their 'safe word'.-
"Yeah, they've been loving this whole night. It's good to see them be kids, y'know? Like Cass and Cody have been hanging out with their friends all night and Leo, Willow and Erin have been dancing up a storm between the three of them."
Renee Brandon
-a smile drifts across her face- It is. I think I even saw Erin dancing with Oliver a few times. I'm glad they're enjoying themselves. -she contemplates whether to ask or not but decides to ask anyway- You dance with anyone tonight?
Jake
"Willow has insisted on a couple of dances but that's it so far. You?"
Renee Brandon
Just the boys. I've been preoccupied with making sure the snack bar is stocked and cleaning up spilled punch.
Jake
-Jake let out a snort-
"So basically you've been taking care of everyone else but yourself. That's not having fun, Renee. For once, let someone else take care of the clean-up."
Renee Brandon
I'm a mom, I can't help it. -she laughs a little as she shrugs- And I like feeling useful. Plus, the less mess there is now, the less mess we have to clean up once everyone heads home for the night.
Jake
-opens his mouth to argue some more about this but realises that will be a waste of time. Instead he shakes his head.-
-Before he can try to divert the conversation in a new direction, Erin runs up to them-
"Quick, you're both gotta come with me! No time to explain!"
-With that, Erin takes off, heading through the crowd and out of the Community Centre. Jake glances at Renee before running after her-
Renee Brandon
-Renee notices how he's about to say something but doesn't. She doesn't think it could be anything to warrant their safe word but she was about to ask when Erin runs up to them. She's running outside and with Jake following after her, she takes a second to remove her heels so she can run after them. Her heart is pounding as her motherly instincts kick in and she worries something might have happened to one of the kids-
Jake
-Jake doesn't wait for Renee to catch up as he chases after Erin. She leads him to the library, standing by the front door for a second to make sure he had followed before ducking inside. He followed her in to find her leading the way to one of the study rooms on the ground floor. In there, he found Cass sat on the floor, her head in her hands.-
"Shit, Cass, honey, what's wrong?"
-Jake crouched next to her and put his hand on her shoulder.-
Renee Brandon
-it takes Renee a minute to catch up, her legs definitely shorter than Jake's, but she follows them inside the library. She quickly spots Cass on the floor and she moves to kneel next to Jake- Honey, are you hurt? What happened?
Jake
-Cass waited until both Jake and Renee were next to her. From outside of the study room, Jake heard Cody yell: now! Cass jumped up to her feet and dashed out of the room. Oliver slammed the door behind her, leaving Jake and Renee alone in the room. Jake could hear a collection of giggles and shouts from the other side of the door, plus the distinct clicking noise of the door being locked.-
"I think we've been tricked."
Renee Brandon
-Renee looked over her shoulder when she heard Cody and was frozen in surprise as Cass ran out and she saw her oldest close the door. It didn't take long to put two and two together and she sighed with a shake of her head.- I think you're right. -she pushes herself to her feet and tries to open the door, not being surprised that it's locked- Oliver....Mom needs you to open this door right now.
Jake
-He doesn't even bother trying to open the door. Instead he walks over to the desk that sits against one of the walls in the room and leans against it to watch Renee negotiate with Oliver-
"Do you think this has anything to do with Operation Bulbasaur?"
Renee Brandon
Sorry, Mom, but Erin said not to let you out just yet. -Renee sighs as she hears the kids run off and goes to sit down at one of the desks.- I think this very much has to do with Operation Bulbasaur. Erin seems to be the ringleader.
Jake
-he shakes his head in disbelief-
"Yeah, makes sense. You know, one day Erin is gonna rule the world and we'll all be at her mercy."
Renee Brandon
I would not put it past her. -she laughs a bit as she leans against the desk and holds her head up- How long do you think they're going to keep us locked in here?
Jake
-He glances at his watch-
"Either they let us out quick to end the prank or they all get distracted by the Prom and we're in here until Lucien gets back and finds us."
Renee Brandon
-Renee looks at the door before back at Jake- I think we might be in the latter category. Pretty sure I heard them run off already.
Jake
-On the one hand, he gets it. The kids had obviously picked up on something happening between Jake and Renee and wanted to do something to help that along. He kinda wished they had thought of a different plan than locking them in a room together but he guessed they had good intentions.-
-On the other hand, Jake didn't want to be locked in this room with Renee all night. Not when they still hadn't fully resolved everything that was going on between them and her with Andy.-
"Don't suppose you've got a deck of cards on you, do ya?"
Renee Brandon
-when he asked about the deck of cards, she laughs and shakes her head- I left them in my other skirt, I'm afraid. -she looks around the room- think there's any paper and pencils in here to play hangman or something?
Jake
-He smiles as she laughs, not stopping himself from showing how much he adores hearing that sound from her. He nearly says something about other things they could do to pass the time but he knows that's a bad idea.-
"Or we could play eye-spy?"
Renee Brandon
Eye spy? -she smiles and huffs a laugh- Yeah, that works. Although I don't know if there's much in here for us to guess.
Jake
"It's either eye spy or we have to create a new game ourselves. Or else we'll have to converse and we both know we're terrible at that!"
Renee Brandon
-she manages a laugh but it sounds a bit more hollow- Yeah....and we used to be good at talking. -she looks around the room- So....I spy with my little eye something......green.
Jake
-he starts looking around the room for something green but stops. He figures 'fuck it'. They're locked in here together, might as well hash things out so to speak.-
"Time out. Circle back to 'we used to be good at talking.' I know things have gotten really complicated between us and I know we're trying our best to navigate our way through all the mess but c'mon. Are things really that bad between us now?"
Renee Brandon
-She breathes out a long, loaded and tired breath- No, that's not.... they're not that bad, Jake. It's been a bad night and I'm one more wrong move away from breaking down, so please.....I spy something green."
Jake
-He studies her for a long moment, weighing up the pros and cons of pushing ahead and trying to get her to open up about why tonight had been so bad for her.-
"Eye-spy is really what's gonna help right now?"
Renee Brandon
Yes? -she pauses because even she doesn't believe that- No? -yet that didn't feel right either and she cradles her face in her hands for a moment as she takes a deep breath- Just so we're clear, getting tricked by our kids to getting locked in the library with each other is not what's made this a bad night.
Jake
-He watches and waits as Renee works through this, whatever this might be. The urge to walk over to her and hold her is strong but he ignores it for now.-
"I can think of much worse ways to spend an evening, for sure. I promise I won't Bulbasaur you right now. We'll play eye-spy, if that is what's gonna help but you can't keep whatever's bothering you bottled up. You know that, right?"
Renee Brandon
Yeah. -she breathes the word out. she eyes him with a grateful stare but he's also right and she knows it- I got locked in a supply closet.....with Ike, which went as well as one might expect. Shortly after I ran into Vi, who Ike had told about what happened and she was under the impression that I had intentionally tried to get him killed which wasn't true, but that doesn't seem to matter because no matter how many times I say it's my fault and try to apologize or make up for it, it's not enough. It's never enough. I say one thing and everything gets worse and I don't know what to do.
Jake
-It turns out he doesn't need to spring their safe word on her since Renee lets the details of her bad night spill with very little prompting. The urge to take her in his arms rises up again, enough to make him move from his perch on the desk to grab a chair and sit next to Renee. He can't hold her but he can be close to her.-
"Fuck the bunch of 'em."
-Had Renee acted foolishly by running into that clinic before it had been cleared? Yes, incredibly so. But there was nothing that could be done to change what had happened.-
"Sometimes all you can do is apologise and the person you apologise doesn't have to accept it. After that point, all you can do is carry on but show you learned from whatever mistake you had to apologise for."
Renee Brandon
-Renee watches him come to sit next to her and she can't help it. She leans against him, her head on his shoulder. He doesn't need to wrap his arm around her and maybe she shouldn't be leaning against him like this but she needs it- Vi thinks I should step down from the Council....and I think she's right. I can't do this, Jake.
Jake
-For less than half a second, his posture freezes as Renee leans into him and puts her head on his shoulder. But he then relaxes, despite himself.-
"Then step down. But do so because it's your own choice and because that's what's best for you and the town."
Renee Brandon
-She breathes out a heavy sigh- What do you think I should do?
Jake
"I think you should give yourself a break, in every sense of the word."
Renee Brandon
-The ghost of a smirk appeared on her face as she rolled her head so she could look up at him - A break, huh? I think you need to teach me what this magical break thing is.
Jake
"Jeez, have you ever let yourself relax? Like ever?"
-He's gently teasing her at this point, hoping that by maybe making her laugh, she'll feel a little better.-
Renee Brandon
-She managed a small laugh- I don't have time for relaxing, Hawk. Have you met our kids?
Jake
"That's why there's this wonderful thing called babysitting in which you get someone you trust to look after your kids for a couple of hours while you look after yourself. C'mon, surely you're heard of it?"
Renee Brandon
Oh I have. In fact, I utilizie that any time I have work to do. -she's smiling a bit more relaxed now- Not sure where I can go, though to get away and relax. There's not many places around town to go that don't remind me of work that needs to be done and outside the walls aren't exactly that relaxing.
Jake
-He can see the more relaxed nature in her smile now and he relaxes a little more himself-
"You need a new hobby. Something to take your mind off of everything else."
Renee Brandon
Well, if you have any brilliant ideas, I am all ears. -she pushes off his shoulder, rolling her shoulders before a shiver runs through her- I am really regretting not wearing something a bit warmer.
Jake
-Without waiting to be asked, Jake shrugs off his jacket and hands it to her-
"That's what you get for choosing fashion over function."
Renee Brandon
-she eyes him as he shrugs off his jacket and hands it to her- In my defense, I thought I would be chasing Oliver and Henry around the whole community center. -she takes the jacket and loops her arm through the sleeves to slide it on over her- Thank you. I'll give it back whenever we're freed.
Jake
"Yeah, best laid plans and all that. I'd offer to run laps around the room with you but I can't imagine how we'd explain that if someone other than our kids find us in here!"
Renee Brandon
Honestly, I think if someone caught you running laps around here, people might not question it as much. -she breathed out as she curled her hands into his sleeves to keep them warm- I don't think we'll have to worry about that. It's quite believable that our kids locked us in the library together. Just a shame we'll miss the rest of the prom.
Jake
"What do you think we're missing right now? What gossip is being made right now that we'll hear about tomorrow?"
Renee Brandon
-Renee hummed as she sat back in her chair- I don't know. I don't pay much attention to town gossip. But people are probably getting drunk, I'm sure someone has snuck off with someone to hook up, Cole got into a fight with someone so he might be looking for round two.....oh yeah, and they'll crown Cass and Sol as prom king and queen. What about you? What do you think?
Jake
"OK, back up: who's sneaking off with who to hook up? The weirder the combo, the better!"
Renee Brandon
Hmmmm..... -she taps her chin with her the edge of his jacket- Zack and Ike. That would be volatile as hell.
Jake
"Oof, OK. Yeah, you're right: volatile as all hell! Alright, who's fighting who? Apart from Cole since you've already mentioned him."
Renee Brandon
Oh no, I chose who is sleeping with who. You get to choose who is fighting who.
Jake
"Alright. Fine. In that case... Fleet and Cass but it's not a fist fight, it's a singing fight and it's real close between the two of them!"
Renee Brandon
Oh, that would be fun to see. Too bad we're stuck in here and missing it. -she laughs a little as her arm drops back to hugging herself- What other gossip do you think we're missing?
Jake
"Someone's made David laugh and I'm not there to see it. Nicki and Val are playing a drinking game and getting way too competitive about it. Cian and Cass are having a pun-off and it's a tight race."
Renee Brandon
-Renee laughs, leaning her elbow on the desk and cradling her head as she watches his face- Sounds like one hell of a party. Too bad we're missing it.
Jake
"Yeah, well, there's not much we can do about that unless we're willing to wreck a door and then explain that to Lucien in the morning."
Renee Brandon
Yeah, I don't feel like being on the wrong side of Lucien's wrath. -she hums her laugh as she sits up- Too bad there's not music in here. We could throw our own little mini prom in here.
Jake
"Neither do I."
-He laughs too.-
"I'd offer to sing but that would only put a damper on things, believe me!"
Renee Brandon
Oh, you can't be that bad of a singer.
Jake
"I'm not about to demonstrate now so don't even try it!"
Renee Brandon
Oh, pleaasseee. -she pleads and gives him her best puppy dog face-
Jake
"Ugh, the puppy dog eyes! How dare you!"
-He crosses his arms and shakes his head-
"The only person I'll sing for is Erin and that's only because she doesn't yet know how flat I am."
Renee Brandon
-she lays it on him a bit more, waiting to see if he'll crack- Please......
Jake
"Jeez! Fine! But you can't watch me. I know that makes no sense; just humour me."
Renee Brandon
Okay, okay. -she smiles victoriously as she turns in her seat so her back is to him and waits patiently for him to start singing-
Jake
-At least she honoured his request by turning her back to him. He turns in his seat too so they're now back to back. He shakes his head as he takes in a deep breath and considers what the hell he's going to sing. After disregarding the first few songs that come to mind, Jake starts to sing 'Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now' by Starship. Was it a cheesy as all hell song? Yeah but it was a classic and he's kinda hoping Renee will join in to sing along with him to hide how bad he thinks he is-
Renee Brandon
-Renee sits patiently, watching out the window as she waits for Jake to sing. Then he starts singing and she bites down on her lower lip as she listens to him. He's not bad at all and she enjoys his singing in silence while swaying in her seat to the song-
Jake
-He can feel her swaying along to the song as he sings and he takes that as a good sign, that maybe he's not so bad at singing after all. Not that he'll be singing karaoke in the Community Centre any time soon. When he reaches the part when the woman singer takes over, he nudges Renee with his elbow, indicating that's her cue to join in-
Renee Brandon
-she's been humming along but she's caught off guard when he nudges her- Me? -he can't see it but she's blushing. She takes a minute to recall the words before very softly taking over the song-
Jake
"Yeah, you."
-He grins as she starts to sing, her voice soft but he can hear every note in the silence of the rest of the room. After a couple of moments of just listening, he starts to smack his hands on his thighs as if he was playing drums to accompany her. When she reaches the chorus, he joins in with singing along with her-
Renee Brandon
-she looks over her shoulder at him as she sings, wishing she could see his face and see if she was as bad as she thought she was. but he doesn't laugh or do anything except starting to play the drums on his legs, which she takes as a good sign and keeps singing even when he joins back in-
Jake
-This is going better than Jake could have ever expected. Not that he was planning on a repeat performance any time soon. They reached the end of the song and Jake clapped his hands-
"Not too shabby, huh?"
Renee Brandon
-as the song ends and he claps she laughs and turns around- Yeah, not too shabby. You're not a bad singer, by the way.
Jake
-He's conflicted about her compliment. He wants all the praise he can get but at the same, he can't quite believe she means it, just saying it to be nice, even though he knows Renee wouldn't bullshit him for the sake of it.-
"Thanks. You're good, you know?"
Renee Brandon
You don't have to lie, you know. I cannot carry a tune. You only think I sounded good because you were singing.
Jake
-He turns in his seat so he can face her with the look of disbelief he's currently wearing-
"You think I'd lie to you?"
Renee Brandon
-Renee sits up a bit and quickly realizes what it was she said- Oh....no, that's not what I meant. I just meant that..... -she smiles awkwardly and shifts in her seat- Gimme a second to pull my foot out of my mouth.
Jake
-Almost immediately his face softens and he gives her a gentle smile instead-
"Just take the compliment, Brandon."
Renee Brandon
-Renee laughs awkwardly but in relief- Alright, fine. I will take the compliment.
Jake
"Alright, good."
-He gives her a smile and looks back around the room before letting out a chuckle-
"Back to eye spy?"
Renee Brandon
-she glances around when he does and nods- You still haven't guessed what I saw that is green.
Jake
-He looks around the room, really looks, trying to spot this green thing. He doesn't spot it yet so time to make a wild guess-
"Tree?"
Renee Brandon
-Renee laughs as she shakes her head- Nope, try again.
Jake
"Frog?"
Renee Brandon
Close, but no.
Jake
"Don't tell me there's a Bulbasaur in here?"
Renee Brandon
I mean, the voice of Bulbasaur is, but no, there's not one in here. -she laughs as she shakes her head-
Jake
"But I wasn't actually Bulbasaur, I was Harry who's consciousness got swapped into a Bulbasaur- You know what? That's not important. Something green, something green, that's like a frog but not a frog."
Renee Brandon
Oh trust me, I know. Oliver would watch that movie on repeat, if he could. -she laughs as he keeps looking- Do you give up?
Jake
"Do I look like the kind of guy to give up so easy? A toad? The Incredible Hulk? Other such green things!"
Renee Brandon
-Renee was laughing harder and harder with each thing he named off. She shook her head as she felt how warm her face was- You can't just give some blanket statement like that! That's cheating!
Jake
"Why not? Who said it was cheating? How dare you?"
-At this point, he's just saying stuff to make Renee laugh more-
Renee Brandon
-Renee can't even get a word out, she is laughing that hard. She has the bury her face in her hands because she's laughing and struggling to breathe but in a good way- You are ridiculous!
Jake
-Jake is now laughing too. It feels refreshing for the two of them to be laughing like this.-
"Fine! I've run out of green things. What is it?"
Renee Brandon
-Renee takes a minute to compose herself before holding up a finger while standing up. She walks over to one of the desks and picks up a green pen that was sitting on top of it- Tada!
Jake
-He watches as Renee pulls herself together and walks across the room. He groans loudly as she picks up the pen.
"How was I supposed to see that tiny thing from here?!"
Renee Brandon
-Renee puts it down and starts laughing again - I'm a mother, Jake. I see everything.
Jake
-Jake grins as Renee starts to laugh again. It's a sound he'll never tire of after all.-
"Everything? You didn't see how our kids were gonna trick us and lock us in together."
-He cants his head to one side and clicks his tongue.-
"Not that I saw it coming either so I shouldn't mention that ever again!"
Renee Brandon
You're right, you didn't see that either. And it was your little mastermind that came up with it. -her laughter quiets just a bit as she nudges him- Your turn.
Jake
-He acknowledges the fact it was his kid behind the plan with a short hum, his lips briefly setting in a thin line. But he shrugs that off and starts looking around the room for his object to spy-
"Considering you see everything, I'm guessing you're gonna get it in, like, one guess. I'd bet on it, actually!"
Renee Brandon
Oh yeah? What are you willing to bet? -she doesn't think she will but if he wants to make things interesting, why not?-
Jake
"A dance."
-The words are out of his mouth before he can stop them. Dancing led to certain things the last time they tried it, the same certain things Jake was trying his best not to think about.-
Renee Brandon
-Renee ponders it for a moment. It could be a bad idea, but they were alone in here. Where was the harm in that?- You're on
Jake
-He grins as she accepts the wager-
"So, in that case! I spy with my beady little eye, something that's... yellow."
Renee Brandon
-Renee ponders in thought as she glances around the room. Her eyes are scanning for anything remotely yellow- The glow of the lights from the community center?
Jake
-He looks smug-
"Nope!"
Renee Brandon
Damn. -she looks around again- My hair?
Jake
-He continues to look smug as he shakes his head-
Renee Brandon
You know because you bet I would get it on the first try that I technically win this bet, right? -she laughs a little as she looks around- The book on the top shelf?
Jake
"You might have won the bet but you haven't yet won this round of eye-spy because that's your third wrong guess."
Renee Brandon
-Renee laughed as she shook her head- Alright, I give up. What is it?
Jake
"You didn't even list all the possible yellow things it might be!"
-He gets to his feet and walks over to the bookcase on one side of the room. There he picks up the yellow object: a small rubber ducky-
"I can't believe you didn't see this!"
Renee Brandon
-Renee laughs as she watches him walk victoriously over to the rubber ducky- Maybe I cheated and didn't say it so I could win the bet. -she was teasing, of course-
Jake
-He hands her the ducky-
"I reckon you should keep that as a souvenir for prom night. Did you really cheat? And here I was thinking you're an upstanding citizen!"
Renee Brandon
I will treasure it forever. -she laughs as she takes the ducky and shakes her head- No, I didn't. I'm just as fallible as anyone else.
Jake
"Well, you won the bet. You want your prize now or..."
Renee Brandon
-Renee laughs under her breath as she sets the rubber duckie down on the desk and stands up- I think now is a good as time as any.
Jake
"I just wanna make it clear: I'm not singing and dancing at the same time, OK?"
Renee Brandon
-she laughs and shakes her head- That's fine, I can live with that. But I do get to ask what song you're singing in your head so I at least know what rhythm you're imagining.
Jake
"Will 'What's Up' by the 4 Non-Blonds work for you?"
Renee Brandon
Yeah, that'll work just fine. -she laughs as she wraps her arms around his shoulders gently-
Jake
-He makes sure to put his hands in perfectly respectable places and they start swaying together to the imaginary music.-
"Having fun?"
Renee Brandon
Yes, loads of fun. -she smiles as she sways with him. She does feel a bit silly dancing to non-existent music but it fits with Jake- You?
Jake
-She seems to mean it when she says she's having fun. He gives her a smirk-
"Considering nothing has gone to plan for tonight, I wouldn't change a thing."
Renee Brandon
Nothing? And what did you have planned tonight?
Jake
"Getting tricked by my kids wasn't on my itinerary."
Renee Brandon
Really? That's shocking.-She laughs- what was on your itinerary?
Jake
"Hmm, let's see..."
-Jake is about to list the various activities he had hoped to indulge in tonight but the sound of someone running down the corridor outside, followed by someone banging on the locked door interrupted him-
"YOU BANGING YET?"
-Erin yells followed by the sound of her laughter. The sound of more rapidly approaching footsteps echo down the corridor as the rest of the kids join Erin on the other side of the door.-
"How many times do I have to ask you to stop asking that?"
-Jake yelled back to his youngest. He looked back at Renee-
"I'm so sorry about her."
Renee Brandon
-It took Renee a second to register what Erin yelled. When it did, her face turned beat red and she covered her mouth to stifle the laughter- Did you teach her that?
Jake
-For half a moment, Jake is appalled that Renee would ask him that. But then he remembers that, actually, it's pretty on brand for him.-
"No, I didn't."
-He goes over to the door and tries the door handle again. It's still locked-
"You gonna let us out?"
-There was a scuffle on the other side of the door, with raised voices between the kids as they argued about whether or not to let their parents out.-
"Do you promise we're not in trouble if we do?"
"I'll promise that if all of you promise to never try anything like this again."
-Jake glances over at Renee to see if she wants to add anything as the kids discussed the terms of the agreement some more-
Renee Brandon
-Renee can't help herself and laughs as she watches Jake walk over to the door. She can hear the kids on the outside as they discuss their next steps. So she walks up next to Jake- You have until three to open this door. One.....two...... -she smirks at Jake victoriously as the door unlocks and opens-
Jake
-Jake is impressed as Renee uses her stern mom voice. As if on cue, the door is finally unlocked and it swings open. Jake is now faced with his Hawks and Renee's kiddos. The majority of the kids look fairly sheepish. Except Erin. Because of course she looks as proud as punch about this whole thing.-
"We're gonna have a talk about the pitfalls of imprisoning people against their wills, Squirt."
-He tells Erin who just grins up at him, no regrets to be seen in her demeanour as she starts to fill her Pops in what he had missed-
"Willow gave Mr David a flower crown and he wore it."
Renee Brandon
-Renee turns her attention to the other side of the door as it opens and she gives her boys the look. But she softens and holds her arms out so her boys can run up and hug her- Sorry, Mommy -her boys said it unison and she shakes her head as she kisses the top of her head. She picks up Henry as Erin tells Jake about David and she can't help but laugh- You should go see if he's still wearing it. I don't think you'll want to miss it.
Jake
"You gonna be OK?"
-Jake blurts the question out before considering how Renee was obviously going to be OK but he doesn't take it back.-
Renee Brandon
-the questions catches her off guard and she gives him a smile with how sweet he is- I'm probably going to take these guys home. Henry has tired eyes. But, uh....I feel better. You go have fun.
Jake
-Not for the first time tonight, Jake is nearly overwhelmed by the want to take Renee into his arms. He resists and instead gives her a smile.-
"Thanks for the dance."
-With that, he turns his attention back to his kids.-
Andy could only nod faintly as Jake spoke of his experience with this place he was being led to. Andy feared he'd already said too much and didn't want to allow himself to give up any more personal information than he already had. Hopefully, this Jake guy wasn't bullshitting and Redwood really was a place he could get back on his feet before continuing his search.
Despite his own paranoia, Andy was finding it more and more difficult to keep up the usually icy demeanor that had served him so well in the years since society's collapse. Empathy was, after all, often a foundational piece of those who had dedicated their lives to being healers and maintaining a cold, aggressively closed off persona was exhausting in and of itself.
"They killed the group I was travelling with." Slowly but surely, Andy was finding his way through the fog that had clouded his mind. Yes, if he turned his head too quickly his head would still spin and it took him a few moments longer to form the right words than usual, but once they finally came out, those words were beginning to be less and less slurred. "They found out I was a doctor before the collapse and thought I'd be good to keep around."
Andy then coughed and spat onto the ground beside him. He exhaled slowly as he brought the back of his hand up to wipe at his mouth. "What'd you do before everything went to shit?" Andy asked. No, he really didn't care as he wasn't in the mood to be making friends and was fully planning on hitting the road as soon as he was able anyway. But at least the conversation would pass the time and keep his mind occupied on something other than the searing pain shooting through his side.
Jake winced as Andy described the circumstances that led to him being hauled around with that pair of fools. It was another reminder how lucky Jake had been through the end of the world so far. He had seen some shit in the last five years and had some of his own close calls but nothing like Andrei had experienced. The sooner Jake got Andrei back to Redwood, the better because then Andrei could heal up and get back to looking for his family, his own happy ending in all of the chaos.
"I was an actor," he said as they continued the slow walk back towards Redwood. Jake was purposefully not taking such direct route back to avoid anyone trailing them back to the haven but also not diverting too far since Andrei was still in a bad way, needing medical care urgently. "I think the only reason why I survived for as long as I have done is because I starred in a zombie flick once!"
Jake managed to fill the time it took to reach Redwood with stories from both his acting career and surviving with the Mighty Hawks. The imposing walls of Redwood were soon looming over them and Jake was bargaining with the security guards about letting Andrei in. With one of the guards' help, Jake got Andrei to the Precinct.
"I know this isn't the most welcoming place to bring you initially but we gotta follow protocols," Jake explained. "We'll get the Doctor to come check you over a.s.a.p. and someone from the Council will be in soon too." Jake looked over at Andrei. "You gonna be OK, man?" Kind of a silly question but Jake felt as if he shouldn't just leave Andrei here, even though the internal security team were here to keep an eye on him.

Jake definitely wasn't bad at fighting. Ares had thrown a punch with full force, but Jake diverted it pretty well, using Ares' momentum against him. If that punch to the throat had been a proper one, it would've definitely choked the breath out of Ares. The disengage was a good move too - giving both of them time to recuperate. The raider still kept his fighting stance as he seized Jake up, keeping him in his vision. Cody's whooping was a contrast to the silence between the two men, both of them tense from the fight.
But this wasn't really a fight. It was play, nothing more than that. It was good to learn techniques, but if you wanted to learn fighting, you had to get physical. There needed to be a threat, stakes, at least the knowledge that you could get hurt. "C'mon Jake, this is a fight - no need to be soft with me. I can take it." Ares taunted from his spot, eyes still focused. The thrill of fighting someone was making him feel energized. He wanted to teach Jake something. See what the guy had in him. And maybe he just wanted to beat someone that wasn't a dummy.
"That was a weak as fuck punch. Think you can do better than that?" Ares grinned and took a step in Cody's direction. He obviously wasn't going to hurt the kid - but he wanted to see if he could wake up those protective instincts. See what he was capable off in a real fight. "Do you really think you can protect your kids like that?"
Jake narrowed his eyes at Ares as the other man tried to goad him into a full fight. Jake simpy wasn't in the mood for this, especially in front of Cody. Cody had already seen more than his fair share of violence and trauma already and it was Jake's responsibility to protect Cody from seeing any more of that, particularly if it was unnecessary. This 'fight' was supposed to be for training purposes, not Jake and Ares beating the shit out of each other in front of Jake's son.
Annoyance started to boil inside of Jake at how Ares dared to call into question his ability to protect his kids. This was all part of Ares's ploy to get Jake to take a proper swing at him and Jake shouldn't take it personally but he did; it stung the part of him that was always questioning if he was doing enough for his Mighty Hawks.
Ares took a step closer to Cody and Jake's gaze went to his eldest son. Cody was glaring at Ares, also taking offence to Ares's comments. "Dude, you're being out of line," Cody said in a measured tone. "Pops protected us plenty out there." Cody then surprised Jake by stepping closer to Ares instead of increasing the distance between them. Jake might not be prepared to fight Ares but Cody apparently was.
Jake swallowed down his own annoyance about this situation and stepped up so he was stood between Ares and Cody. He turned his attention directly to Ares. "I've just met you," Jake said to him. "And I want to like you but right now, you're pushing your luck. I'm not fully fighting you in front of my kid. You want actual punches thrown at you, go ask someone else because you're not getting it from me and you're definitely not getting it from Cody. Stand down, dude."
