For the first years of Wally’s life, things were normal. He and his younger sister were born to Jessica Wallace, a single mother living in New Orleans. He was never told who his father was, and he never particularly cared to find out. At age five, his family relocated to Brooklyn, New York, where he spent the remainder of his childhood. His family wasn’t quite traditional, but it never bothered him. He had friends in school, a mom and sister who he loved dearly, and a talent for playing the trumpet. People would tell him that he was a musical prodigy and that he could really go places with his music, but that never happened, as he never got the opportunity to succeed.Â
Things started getting bad once his maternal grandmother and grandfather passed away in 2004 and 2007, respectively, but once the 2008 recession hit, everything really started going downhill for the Wallace family. Jessica lost her job early in the recession, and an inability to pay rent lead to the family being evicted and forced into a homeless shelter. For years to follow, Jessica was in and out of work, and the Wallaces hopped between different shitty apartments. The now teenaged Wally, confused and angry, began acting out. He had several minor run-ins with the law during his early adolescence, mostly for truancy and running away from his mother for days on end. He didn’t know the woman anymore and wanted nothing to do with her, yet the police brought him back to her without hesitation each time. It wasn’t until he was fourteen that his truancy lead to a month long stint in a juvenile detention center, followed by two more months a year and a half later.Â
In 2012, Jessica found a higher paying job and things started to turn around for the Wallaces. However, by October of that year, a hurricane swept everything away, including Wally’s last glimmer of hope for his future, and he was living in a homeless shelter once more. One fateful December afternoon, on a day he actually attended school, he found himself face to face with a classmate who had nothing nice to say. Wally snapped and began beating down on the school bully, eventually pulling a blade and stabbing him. It wasn’t enough to cause any serious harm, but was enough for a warrant to be placed for Wally’s arrest. At seventeen years old, Wally entered a guilty plea for assault with a deadly weapon, and was sentenced to 30 months in prison. He served the first three months in a juvenile facility, and served the remaining 27 in state prison. It was there that he met Diego Flores, a slightly older man from the Bronx who, just like him, was down on his luck.Â
After the two finished out their sentences in 2015, they both found themselves with no homes to return to. With nowhere else to turn, Wally and Diego managed to scrape funds together and travel north, eventually finding and settling in the small town of Barton Point. However, they were both high school dropouts with criminal records, so they ended up on the streets, surviving through squatting in abandoned buildings and banding together with other homeless members of the community. Wally became a caretaker of sorts, making sure everyone in his posse was fed and sheltered. He tried to push every homeless person he came across towards resources, but never took advantage of any of them himself. He had given up on himself, but Diego never did, and was constantly pushing him towards self-improvement. After befriending a local florist in 2019, he was able to secure a job at In Bloom Nursery in March of 2020. With this newfound income and a landlord who was willing to look past their histories, he and Diego were finally able to rent a two-bedroom apartment. Since then, Wally has gotten his GED and is finally starting to believe he has a future.Â
