JEFF the Brotherhood - “Coat Check Girl” SXSW 2015 - OEB Score: 7; Popularity Index: 7 Pairs Well With…King Tuff, Thee Oh Sees, Weezer
Is JEFF the Brotherhood’s eight LP Wasted on the Dream setting up to be their Pinkerton? Taking a late-career, left turn on preview singles “Coat Check Girl” and “What’s A Creep”, JEFF the Brotherhood have suddenly upped their production value and pop-focused songwriting in classic 90s, power pop form. This will be an interesting case of fans of JEFF the Brotherhood’s harder edged side will be turned off, but ears like mine are now sucked into the party. Even better, it’s a good welcoming point to the band’s garage rock catalog. “What’s A Creep” does find some middle ground, but there’s still a relative polish to the band’s thriving metal riffs and dual-guitar solos (rock!!) on record. Wasted on the Dream is due the week before SXSW on March 10th.
New JEFF The Brotherhood? IT’S A CHRISTMAS MIRACLE!

JEFF the Brotherhood surprised show destroyed Dino’s featuring local rock band Gales
November 17, 2014
Photos and words by Amber Davis
To clarify: If you read our headline on our socials, they didn’t exactly destroy Dino’s. However, they did give one memorable night at one of Nashville’s oldest dive bars.
Through the grapevine we heard a rather funny story about how the JEFF bros were tagged on the bill. Openers - Pretty Vagrant - just moved from Phoenix, Arizona to Nashville and wanted to play a show. They called up a old pal from Gales to play with them.  However, they felt that they needed a bigger bill to add for the night. What did they do? Guitarist from Pretty Vagrant Googled ”Nashville Rock Bands.” And who popped up? Our hometown heroes and local rock legends - jeffthebrotherhood. Clueless of who this band was, they received their number stating “Hey man, so I Googled you. Wanna play a show with us at Dino’s?” In which they agreed the day before the show. News spread around Nashville as this could be a rumor, a troll, or the biggest surprise show before Dino’s gets their pretty makeover from Burger Up owners. Turns out the rumors became completely true.Â
We arrived right before Gales performed. These local dudes gave the crowd an entertaining start before the headliners performed. Lead singer - Dave Powell stated “Fuck it, this is me on Tequila.” They played a mix of folk-garage with punk antics such as drunkenly stumbling over the drums, playing in the crowd, and had a small mosh pit form.
We overheard two dudes during Gales "Yeah man, I read from No Country for New Nashville that there might be a possibility JEFF is performing. Rumor or not, I wanted to go.”
Once they left the “stage”, JEFF the Brotherhood squeezed by their fans to get to the back end of Dino’s. The show was delayed for a moment due to the low availability of awkwardly placed outlets. If you are an outsider from Nashville or have never been to Dino’s, this bar is so small a group of 10 people make it seem packed. However, there were at least 50 people in the room. Once, JTB found an extension cord, they kicked off. This lead to the crowd moshing and crowd surfing. Two songs in, and the power at Dino’s was out. Rick, the owner, pushed up the stage shouting the crowd saying “stop tearing up my bar! You can carry on but please do not wreck my place.” People started to shout “No more crowd surfing!” Once the power was back on, the crowd started to push further and started to move anymore. Then another outage happened. As we turned around (as a photo shown above) the ceiling tiles completely collapsed down. Rick rushed to the front again saying “This is my home, please be respectful.” Even though the final breaker shut down was over, the crowd started to calm down with at a minimum headbanging.
The night at Dino’s was completely surreal and reassuring of why we love Nashville. Â
We have loads of more photos from this one-night-only show here!
