⋆ ⭒˚。 [ rafael vitti, cismale, he/him. ] was that JOÃO OLIVEIRA i just saw over at _HANG OUT SPOT_? you know, the THIRTY-TWO year old ONLINE COMIC SHOP OWNER that’s been around _TOWN_ for TWENTY-EIGHT YEARS. people around town say they can somehow both be TACTLESS and COMPASSIONATE, but if you were to ask them, they’d probably say they’re more like tent camping, broken skateboards, the amazing spiderman, horror icons, found footage nerd, water in a coffee mug, summer nights, vintage trucks, a cold lager. guess i’ll just have to stop by _HOUSING_ and find out !
full name: João Antonio Gabriel Santos Oliveira
nicknames: johnny, jay
age / DOB: 32 / nov 2
pronouns: he/him
years in willow glen: 28 years
song: the grand optimist by city and color
aesthetic: tent camping, broken skateboards, the amazing spiderman, horror icons, found footage nerd, water in a coffee mug, summer nights, vintage trucks, a cold lager.
johnny was born and raised in california, to a single mother, and is the eldest of 3.
the family moved the few hours to wiilow glen to be closer to his mother's family.
this proved to be a mistake as time went on. johnny's uncle took over the fatherly role, but was a hard ass and strict on the kids, especially johnny.
this was because johnny and his uncle, luis, spent an awful lot of time together. he forced him to join baseball, he forced him to join soccer. and the times with his uncle continued until he reached his teenage years. even though it's been a while, johnny carries the baggage with him.
despite his childhood, he's pretty much a goof ball and can be a smooth yapper. he's only actually funny about half the time, but being funny, kind, and compassionate are some of the few things he's good at. he's very much into everyone being loved equally and openly. sometimes, he just finds himself in trouble.
due to being home all the time and being homeschooled, johnny didn't have much experience making new friends. he stayed in touch with his old ones, but time eventually took over and made them drift apart. this means that, sometimes, his matter-of-fact attitude in more serious times can come off as extremely rude.
on the flip side, you could probably tell him anything in the realm of possible and he'll believe you. he won't believe the sky is green, but will believe you if you said you know a celebrity or have been skydiving. he'll also trust you with the basics of life until proven otherwise, sometimes recklessly.
put all of this together and you get johnny. a goofball who hates intimacy (emotional and physical) and sometimes can seem like a dead ass buzz kill or grump on his off days. sprinkle in some (justified) depression for flavor.

she makes a face when he clarifies what he means. she knows she is not the nicest person. but she thinks she's at least better than that. "unless you are looking for legal advice, i do not talk to people in exchange for money. i simply do not talk to people who i do not want to talk to." she shakes her head. "the people who make those 'jokes' are childish and stupid. it is not funny." she had always thought so.
she sighs, "i will most likely pawn him off on someone else at the firm so i do not actually have to deal with him. or simply inflate the cost for his attitude." she replies. she very rarely inflates her fees, but she does if anyone, her or her team, is mistreated by the client. a tax on them being rude or entitled. "i am a family and property lawyer. he wanted legal advice in the middle of an event when i was not working, and got upset when i gave him my card instead."
johnny knew she probably didn't mean it like that, but most people either hated or didn't get his sense of humor. it was just... bad. he wasn't very good at being funny, but he sure did try. while there were probably full grown men out there who still found those kind of 'pranks' funny, he knew it was a 'boy thing' that was mean and stupid. "i think it's more of a shitty guy thing anyway," jay replied, shrugging. he thought more highly of women, or anyone really, than men. "a guy was just tryin'a make a joke, and give a compliment." sometimes, johnny actually was just nice.
"oh," he whispered, listening to her tone and grammar rather than the words themselves, she liked to use whole words and her tone seemed more serious for a casual conversation. but then again, she was annoyed.
johnny did his best not to take on her behavior, something he always struggled with when talking to people. he had no idea why he did that, maybe to make the other person seem more comfortable? it probably drove others away in reality. "i envy the commitment you had to build a career," he offered. "i'm just a manager at a store. i didn't even go to college. i wasn't very good at school." he also thought it was cool that she was working and mom-ing, but didn't know if he should mention it. was that nice or annoying? "proud of you for that."
"i would offer to buy you something but i'm getting the feeling you don't really like me," he joked.. half-joked. "i'm sorry this is what you get when you pull in a stranger," he shrugged out, running his fingers back through his hair to brush it out of his face as he stretched back to straighten his posture.
where: anywhere that works for your muse (coffee shop/park/bar) @jasperstarters
he rolls his wrist, tilts it toward the light, squints, like the angle might change the verdict. the small stickman, frozen mid-wheelie on a tiny skateboard, offers him absolutely nothing in the way of reassurance. “okay,” he says slowly, more to himself than anyone else, then glances sideways at the person nearest to him. “be honest. like… aggressively honest.”
he lifts his arm between them, rotating it so they can see it properly, finger tracing just beneath the fresh ink without touching it. “is this,” a pause, “funny-bad, or just bad-bad?” he exhales a laugh through his nose, half-defensive, half-amused. it's ironic he even asks, because his arm (and other body parts) still carry a bunch of other 'funny in the moment' tattoo choices. will he ever learn? “because last night it felt like a fun idea to let a stranger stick-n-poke me. like a ‘this will absolutely still be funny when i’m eighty’ level decision.” he looks back at it again, eyebrows knitting together. “now i’m wondering if i just permanently committed to a stickman who thinks he’s tony hawk.” his gaze flicks back to them, hopeful and already bracing for judgment. “don’t sugarcoat it. i can take it. i think.”
there wasn't much interesting happening in johnny's life, so when a random stranger begged his attention in a bored bar, he just had to oblige. brown eyes darted over the tiny work of art, a wrinkle appearing between his brows as he twisted up in deep analysis. "i would say you have simultaneously made a mistake, it is bad, but it is also funny," he offered, face quickly relaxing before he hovered the opening of his beer bottle to his lips. "i think it depends on how seriously you take life," which was just another weird thing johnny absolutely would say. offer them nothing, jay! a real answer would be too easy.
he finished off the bottle with a large gulp, accidentally hitting it onto the countertop a little too roughly. "i think you've got yourself worked up over something tiny that can easily be hidden or covered and ultimately doesn't matter. i also think you should absolutely never cover or hide it, because i think it's funny... mostly. but we both gotta know here that you're only asking because you want someone to agree with or reassure you. so, what do you think?"
she is usually rather aware of her surroundings, and a part of her does feel a bit bad for interrupting him when he clearly does have headphones in and so many times people do not want to be bothered when doing so. but she decides she needs the distraction more and therefore it doesn't matter that much. he can always ignore her or call her out. the latter would still give her the distraction needed.
she plasters on a smile when he obliges her, "avoiding a rude potential client of mine." she replies quietly. perhaps her own social skills are not the best. but she does want to avoid the other guy in case he continues to try asking her legal advice outside her working hours. "pay me for what?" the french woman asks, head tilting as she frowns.
jay listened to her reasoning for this weird interaction, moving in the seat across from her to get comfortable. "pay you to talk to me," he answered, half-joking, half-serious because look at her. "you know, the joke everyone played on the ugly kids in middle school. 'ask them out as a joke' and stuff... i didn't do that, by the way," he clarified, without admitting that a couple times he was the recipient. usually, it was because of his eyebrows, unruly hair, or gap between his front teeth. thank god middle school was way over and he grew up.
his brain leapt back to the beginning of their interaction, his brow furrowed as he removed his headphones and laid them on the table top. "why would someone who is so rude you'd avoid them be a potential client?" client sounded so professional, a position johnny didn't hold himself. "what kind of job do you have where you have clients? what did he do that was so rude?" he asked, being nosy and not thinking too much about catching her immediately off-guard.

open starter — @jasperstarters
location: the bean scene.
she had not taken the day off fully, but had opted to remain out of the office, deciding to work remotely in the morning and then take the afternoon with her daughter and the pets since she did not have any client meetings. she’d completed everything she needed for the morning while settled in the corner of the bean scene where she was on her third cup of coffee and had her daughter along with her. she’d forgone the stroller for the day, opting for baby wearing as she worked.
she’d stopped working by now, instead closing her laptop and simply enjoying her day. she takes a sip of her coffee, glancing around at the people coming and going for a bit until she recognises the same person who had demanded legal advice at that party the other night — which she’s already done for the day and he’d called to demand time today, so she ducks to look at her coffee for a moment as she debates her escape.
she waves over the first person to walk towards her table, knowing they’re likely headed towards the nearby empty table that was empty mainly because she’d scared off a handful of people already. “hi! have a seat!” she gestures to the chair across from her. “how have you been?”
music blasted through johnny's headphones, probably loud enough for those around him to hear it. who couldn't love modern baseball, right? so he couldn't care less. it was enough to drown out the incessant noise of people chatting around him and baristas calling out orders with names. his computer was open, mouse moving through different spreadsheets, pretending like he knew what he was doing. there was software that did all of this for the shop, but the owner insisted he go through eventually manually to double check. good idea, but sometimes a redundant. sales were nearly always the same, as was customer turn out for events. they had a slight dip every so often, but they'd just reup their strategy for the next month. gotta appeal to the nerds to keep a comic store in business. nerds, and collectors.
standing up, johnny slid his laptop under his arms and headed over towards a trash can to toss his to-go cup, but was shopped by gesturing and mumbling from a woman nearby. his eyes darted to the empty seat in front of her she gestured to, lifting one of the earphones off to hear her voice. "what are we doing?" he whispered, pulling the headphones off completely and leaving them to hang around his neck. surely this had to be a joke, not only did anyone barely speak to him, but let alone a pretty person in public. "did someone pay you?" he joked, or.. half joked, taking the empty seat across from her.
