I got to try some new archery, and I LOVE IT!
Huge thanks to Richard, Emily, Wojtek, and everyone else out here who let me learn with and from them, and were willing to put me on a horse with a bow. And massive thanks to Santos for letting me sit on his back and shoot arrows!
funny little headcanon is that i believe if victoria ever came out to her mom that shamsi would be like 'okay, that's fine. but i still don't understand why you do not want to go into surgery. all the other gay women are in surgery; do you not want to be a gay surgeon like yolanda and emery? what about your lesbian friend trinity, doesn't she want to do surgery as well? you can do better victoria'
a severe thursday warning is in effect. take shelter now.
the juxtaposition of lando in his slag era and oscar looking like a modern day prince in vanity fair like they’re straight out of ao3 for real

No, yeah, it's really cool that you turned out to be the rightful holder of the Mandate of Heaven, that's fantastic, but you do know that you can only cash that in to become the emperor of China if you're within Chinese borders. That's the actual hard part. There have been like 30 known people with the Mandate of Heaven in the past 15 years, they just keep getting tracked down and executed by PLA hunter-killer teams before they make it over the border. There's naval mines all across the South China Sea to catch any rightful rulers trying to sail in under the radar too. Real tough stuff.
Would have been easier a few decades ago, but there's been, what, two, two and a half trillion yuan poured into reconnaissance and R&D since then. They can pinpoint the rightful ruler of China down to a 100-mile region anywhere on the world now. Spy satellites. Hope I didn't scare you too much. If it's worth anything, I think you've got a shot. You could get on a civilian flight to Beijing and see if they're willing to tank the diplomatic hit of shooting it down. That actually might work. Nah, I'm kidding ya. Seven of them tried that and got vaporized. You're fucked.
fantasy: the kingdom has been ruled by one family for 10,000 years
science fiction: a new species evolved in 30 years
Very funny to see Ki-Adi-Mundi getting condemned for having "30 single parent kids" out there that he's helped to father even while he remains a Jedi and seemingly does not spend much time with his children and isn't in their lives all that much.
Like, we have almost NO IDEA what this culture is like. It would be SO EASY to assume that they have a system where they raise kids very communally, especially given the REASON why Ki-Adi-Mundi is given the permission to have kids anyway is because his species is DYING OUT and does not have enough men to help reproduce so everyone is required to do their part to keep the entire species from going extinct.
Ki-Adi-Mundi is HARDLY the only man on his planet who would theoretically have had to have many wives and help produce many children with them, so it seems unlikely that he is the only one who is a somewhat absentee parent to at least SOME of his wives and children, which would naturally lead to a more communal system where the women band together to help raise their kids.
All of his wives would've been aware of what he is and what his restrictions were. I'm not sure if we even know if the wives intentionally CHOSE Ki-Adi-Mundi to help father their children or if they were assigned to him randomly, but either way they would have been unlikely to assume that he'd be around all that much or be super supportive as a parent to literally all of the kids he was expected to help produce.
I dunno, I guess it just seems really ridiculous to place the most bad faith interpretation possible on this when we seem to have extremely little real information about the situation or most of the people involved.
Would you be interested in hearing my thoughts as to why Ki-Adi had to marry and not just donate genetic material?
Sure. I think I usually assume it's some sort of cultural or genetic thing, but I also haven't thought about it that hard since it's obviously something that's only an issue because of a later retcon, so feel free to elaborate on your own headcanon.
So I’d been thinking about it from the angle of, why did he have to marry rather than shipping off genetic material? I suspect the Doylist reason is that either the point was to give him a reason to marry, or the comic writers weren’t comfortable with single mothers like that. But I wanted a Watsonian reason.
Cerea as a planetary culture is rather tech-phobic. So, it would make sense that they don’t do genetic testing. That, combined with the population issues, would make it plausible that they put a large emphasis on tracking family trees and genealogy, to decrease the chance of inbreeding problems - in irl human populations, we’re generally okay with second-cousin marriages on the genetic front, but I imagine on Cerea they want more diversity. So, that means it’s plausible that it’s vitally important culturally to be absolutely certain who your parents are.
What has that to do with marriage? Traditionally, in numerous irl cultures, the husband is assumed to be the father, with the idea being if he doesn’t denounce the wife he’s accepting responsibility. In a society placing great emphasis on tracking paternity without genetic testing, it makes sense (to me at least) that it’s a fairly simple case of, children must be born within wedlock to stamp the identity of the father on them, so to speak. I also imagine that adultery (or at least adultery resulting in pregnancy) is extremely taboo, due to the risk of accidentally mixing close or semi-close bloodlines. There might also be a cultural of arranged or semi-arranged marriages to keep diversity wide.
So, what I imagine went down with Ki-Adi is something like this: I believe one condition of him being sent to the Temple was that he would come back to do his duty re population, and he did spend quite a few years as Watchman in the sector. I think he went back, settled as Watchman, found a few likely brides, married them, had children, and then reached a point where he was finding it increasingly difficult to leave Cerea for his duties elsewhere in the sector and realised he would have to choose between his family and the Jedi. I don’t think the Jedi would have pressured him one way or the other, and would have offered appropriate support if he did decide to leave, but Ki-Adi decided he was a Jedi first and Cerean second. He left his wives and children, probably making sure they had a good level of security, and returned to the Temple, maintaining a somewhat distant communication until…I think there was a major attack on Cerea in the Clone Wars that killed them all.
This is my thinking on it as well. The marriages were specifically to track who is related to who and by how many degrees in a society that does not rely on DNA libraries - whether from being tech phobic or simply not having the infrastructure for that.
It may also make sure that one man is not over-burdened with more genetic donations than any other and may help prevent accidental over-saturation of genetic material from one male line. Each man is limited to a certain number of wives and only one or two children are expected of them. Some may be given more wives than others of they produce more make offspring than other, as well. Just because there is a need for more men. But they would have to be careful about too much inbreeding and marriages make it easier for individuals to keep track of who they are related to than looking it up in a library would.

Yeah I straight up never got why Ki-Adi-Mundi got so much hate, it was such a new thing to me when I found out recently.

just saw a pigeon doing the puffed up courtship dance thing to another pigeon, and as he was strutting around he suddenly stopped for a split second to do a very brief preen-peck at his own side, then returned to the strutting around. and i surprised myself by instantly losing respect for the male pigeon in that moment, like come on man i appreciate you had an itch or whatever but how is she supposed to feel special when you're getting distracted by bullshit like that? which on reflection i don't endorse, i mean those are pretty harsh dating norms i'm imposing on these pigeons, from a total outsider perspective, for no reason. probably not all girl pigeons are as uptight about that sort of thing as i would apparently be if i was a girl pigeon, maybe she even found it endearing who knows, i don't know her. it's none of my business really. sorry pigeons.
Next up someone is going to claim that the Narnia series isn't kids books.
Kids books is probably not the best way to word it, you can enjoy them at every age, including your childhood, as you get older you may find new truths in them, but they're still good for any age.
definitely a trio written by the universe
Not the news i thought i would see in middle of writing my notes

There is one single aspect of Sabine's live action design I do appreciate and that is that her chest plate is flat. Compared to all the other live action Mandalorian women having visibly boob accomadating armor, hers is much more similar to the male characters. I like this a lot.
