George also took the wise old warrior/mentor figure and made him a snarky, sad desert hermit who could simultaneously trade banter with a droid and cut someone’s arm off in a bar. And *surprise* he is also related (by love and circumstance if not by blood) to almost everyone involved and had a hand in how that asthmatic robot, spunky princess, and wide-eyed farmer boy found themselves in the situations they were in at the start of the movie, as well as being the one to bring them together again.
