This was a question given to me and the other students on my course, which has really made me think and express how I feel towards Graphic Design.

What would the world be like? I can imagine that the world would be extremely dull and depressing. Design gives us colour, uniqueness and expression in many forms in more ways than others. We are able to be creative and visually see what an idea would be. Graphic Designers can specialise in many different areas such as advertising, web design, logo, creative/art director, photoshop artist – the list is endless.

Personally, I feel that Design in general has always played an important part within our society; being involved in the economies, social structures, the environments and of course the role in cultural developments too. Graphic designers have the role to create all sorts of visual concepts, either using computer software or by using hand rendered images/ideas allowing them to communicate ideas that captivate customers. Having design allows us to portray a message to something in the best way possible, it can be important for advertisements and promotional values.

Imagine a world without logos, advertisements, magazines, road signs, books etc. It almost sounds ludicrous when you think about it. No road signs, meaning no sense of direction. No packaging for items or branding would make the world very difficult in a sense that no one would understand what the product is, no specialised logos or branding on it etc.

If graphic design wasn’t around, I would pursue my wildest dream and become a lifeguard. However, I’m not the best at swimming (as I used to be) so I’d definitely have to take lessons to improve!

Overall, I think we can all agree that it wouldn’t be exciting or quirky, if we didn’t have someone designing new things or exploring different processes. It would be a very boring world.
