I find it very interesting that he has always been associated with the fallen angel…

Their very last moment.

I saw an engraving from 1804 which depicts Saint-Just kissing Robespierre goodbye and since then I cannot stop thinking about it. Some other illustrations also show SJ comforting Maximilian before guillotine.

We know that he hardly spoke before his execution except “Adieu” to Maxime. I personally interpret his silence as some kind of resignation, for he knew his speech no longer held any power to change something. But even then, he decided his last word would be a farewell to a man who he only knew by his miracle.

Maybe after everything in the mortal world ceased to matter, the only thing remained was his genuine feeling, his love.

It’s already Thermidor 5…

I find it interesting that in most movies, Saint-Just crosses his arms like this and stands silently after his Thermidor 9 speech is interrupted.

What is he looking at? What is he thinking? Why does he remain silent?

He gazes somewhere far away, beyond all the slander and the malice that fill the hall at the very moment. He already made the choice to die, and thus his gaze and mind wander into the far future after everything. I would like to think the crossed-armed gesture as some kind of comfort gesture, something he tends to do when he is stressed or faced with others’ spite. I will apply the gesture when playing him…

It seems like Thermidor has finally begun…

The moon phase of his birthday (August 25, 1767) and that of his execution day (July 28, 1794) are the same and both phases are one, which means a very thin crescent moon, almost a new moon but just a day older.

The fact that the night sky held the same moon for the start and the very end of his life really kills me

I’m fully convinced that this SJ is an angel who happened to fall from heaven and forced to live among the mortal. He’s always thoughtful, virtuous and tries so hard to reconcile the committee members to prevent destruction.

But he knows his limits. In this scene, after talking to Lebas, his smile fades away. He sits alone in his room, silently looks up, with a resigned and sorrowful look in his eyes.

Thermidor is slowly approaching…
