"Please, tell me what I did wrong."

Title: Run Away With Me

A/N: this is in the same universe as Mac + Jack + Texas

He hadn’t been the same since he came back from the Kovac mission and it was obvious Mac was done with him. He’d been moody. Withdrawn even. Watching his best friend pack his suitcase not even acknowledging his presence hurt worse than anything Kovac did to him he was captured and tortured 14 months before.

“Mac? Mac will you please tell me what I did wrong? I’m sorry for whatever it was I did,” Jack pleads his voice cracking halfway through. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry please don’t leave me.”

Spinning at the sound of Jack’s cracking voice, Max feels his heart break immediately. Jack looks horrible, his nose is red and he can see the tears beginning to stream down his face. Reaching out and grabbing Jack’s hand Mac has to fix it because he can’t stand to him cry, especially when it’s over something he’s not done wrong, “Jack, I’m not leaving you. You didn’t do anything wrong, I promise I just need some time away from LA and the Phoenix. With everything that’s gone on in the last 3 years I can’t stand to be anywhere close to this place anymore. We got shut down, my dad died, I almost lost you, I guess I did lose you for a few months, Codex and Russ and Desi fucking off somewhere leaving us in a lurch.”

“Can I go with you? I know I’ve been withdrawn and moody but I think getting away could be good for me too,” he asks before realizing how needy he sounds and he tries to back away from Mac. He’s immediately tugged back into Mac’s arms and for the first time since he left left for that godforsaken mission he feels like he’s right where he needs to be.

“Jack, Jack, Jack,” Mac says nice and easy ,” I planned for you and I to run away together. I already talked to the powers to be and you and I have rest of our lives to do anything and go anywhere we want. Go pack a bag lover boy we got people to see and some horses to go take care of in the great state of Texas.”

“Texas?! Hell yeah hoss I’ll be 15 minutes then we can get this show on the road,” Jack exclaims excitedly running towards the door.

He’s gone before Mac can say anything else but it’s okay he’s got the rest of his life to kiss Jack Dalton. They’ve both got trauma in the pasts that need to be addressed from the last 3 years but getting back to the ranch is a pretty good start.
