The blue light of his phone screen was the only thing keeping the dark at bay. Ni-ki leaned back against the cool leather of the couch, his long legs stretched out ahead of him, staring blankly at the glowing glass as it cast a cold, pale wash over the sharp edges of his jaw and caught the heavy, empty look in his eyes. He had been staring at the screen for three hours, desperately trying to drown out his own thoughts. For a little while, hanging out with Eunchae had worked. She was a good distraction. But the very second his key turned in the dorm lock and he stepped into the pitch-black hallway, the quiet had swallowed him whole. His thumb flicked upward in a mechanical rhythm, scrolling through TikTok in search of a lifeline. He was looking for any passing video or stray meme that might break the monotony and coax out the laughter that usually came so easily. But the screen offered only a blur of flashing lights and noise. Nothing resonated. Instead, his thoughts remained stubbornly snagged on a loop, replaying the friction of the afternoon.
It was becoming a pattern. They had always been the pair that clashed and recovered, their bond built on banter and affectionate provocation. But recently, the lines had started to blur.
Then, a soft voice broke the quiet.
Can we talk?
Ni-ki didn't answer right away. He slowly lowered his phone, his dark eyes finding Jake’s through the gloom. He offered no welcoming smile, nor did he glare; he merely gave a single nod, letting the gesture serve as a quiet invitation. He sat frozen, watching as Jake began to speak, his apology coming out in quiet, broken pieces. Whenever things got too heavy, his brain did what it always did: it locked up and shut down. He didn't want to cry, and he absolutely did not want to have a massive, tearful talk in the dead of night. But he was also too stubborn to just pretend nothing had happened, and way too tired to keep carrying the anger. "It's fine." His voice was low, devoid of the sharp attitude from earlier, but guarded as he shrugged, a quick, jerky movement of his shoulder, dismissing it. "It's whatever, I guess."
"no." the word came quietly, almost instinctively. jake shook his head once, a humorless smile tugging at the corner of his mouth before disappearing just as quickly. "it's not." he had heard those words enough times to know what they usually meant. they weren't forgiveness. they were exhaustion. "we don't have to talk about it," because honestly, jake didn't think he had it in him to have a heavy conversation that would open wounds that hadn't yet begun to heal. his fingers fidgeted with the sleeve of his hoodie, a habit of his when his anxiety spiked. "i've been making things harder on you for weeks."
the admission came easier than he'd expected. "every little thing you've done, i've had something to say about it," he takes a small pause before continuing. "and none of it was because of you." he paused there because that was as close as he was willing to get. jake let out a slow breath before finally sitting down on the opposite end of the couch, leaving enough space between them that ni-ki didn't feel cornered.
"i miss..." he started before stopping himself. "us just messing around." the correction came quickly, like he'd caught the original thought before it slipped out.
Sleep had become inconsistent lately. Some nights it came easily. Others, his mind refused to shut off, circling the same thoughts until dawn threatened the horizon. Tonight had been one of those nights. The television played on low volume more for background noise than entertainment, an untouched mug of tea sitting on the coffee table after it'd long since gone cold. He'd figured Jake just needed time to cool off. After everything that had happened earlier, the argument with Ni-ki, the tension that seemed to cling to every conversation lately, it hadn't felt right chasing after him. Jake wasn't the type to appreciate someone hovering when he was upset. If anything, trying to force a conversation would've only made him shut down more. So Sunghoon stayed behind, hoping a few hours away from everyone would do Jake some good.
Truthfully, he wasn't sure it had done any of them much good. The dorm had felt...off for weeks now. Conversations died quicker than they used to. Laughs didn't linger as long. Even when everyone was together, it felt like they were standing on opposite sides of an invisible line, each carrying frustrations they either couldn't or wouldn't put into words. The soft click of the front door pulled Sunghoon's attention away from the muted screen. His eyes lifted, finding Jake in the doorway. There was a noticeable pause before he reached for the remote, switching the television off entirely.
"Yeah..." His answer came simply. "Something like that." Sunghoon studied him for a moment, taking in the tired look that hadn't really left Jake's face in weeks. It was becoming familiar. Everyone was carrying something these days. Some were just worse at hiding it than others. "You? You doing any better?" he asked carefully "Or is it still bothering you?"
jake's eyes drifted toward the television as the screen went black, the room somehow feeling even quieter than before. he lingered near the doorway for another second before finally pushing himself off the frame, wandering farther into the living room without much direction. his hands disappeared into the pocket of his hoodie, shoulders rising and falling with a slow breath.
"i'm alright." the answer came a little too quickly, enough that even he didn't sound convinced by it. he dropped onto the opposite end of the couch, elbows resting against his knees as his gaze settled somewhere on the floor instead of sunghoon. "just had to get out for a while."
silence stretched between them, not uncomfortable, just familiar. there had never been much pressure to fill every quiet moment with sunghoon. after a few seconds, jake rubbed a hand over his face before letting out a quiet sigh through his nose. "tired" the word coming out so short. then his fingers fiddle with the ends of his sleeve, his habit whenever his anxiety crept in. "were you waiting on me?"
jake hadn't meant to stay out as long as he did. it hadn't been for any particular reason, either. he'd wandered through convenience stores without buying much of anything, sat on a bench overlooking the river until the evening air became cold enough to make him pull the sleeves of his hoodie over his hands, and walked far enough that his legs ached more than his thoughts did. anything to keep from going back to the dorm where everything felt just a little too quiet whenever everyone settled in for the night.
the front door clicked shut behind him as carefully as he could manage. shoes slipped off near the entrance before he padded farther inside, expecting most of the lights to be off by now. his phone disappeared into his pocket, fingers rubbing absentmindedly over the edge of the case while he let out a slow breath.
every bit of him felt off. maybe it was exhaustion. maybe it was the awkward silence that had followed him out of the company building earlier. maybe it was neither. he didn't bother trying to sort through it.
his gaze drifted through the living room before finally settling on the familiar figure still awake. for a brief second, something almost apologetic crossed his face before it disappeared just as quickly beneath the tired expression he'd been wearing for weeks.
"you're still up?" his voice stayed quieter than usual as he leaned against the doorway instead of moving any farther inside. "couldn't sleep?" @farmingaura
jake had spent months convincing himself that he was okay. that he had accepted the new direction of the group. that this was just how things were now and they had to keep moving forward. he smiled when he needed to, showed up when he needed to, and pretended that the changes didn't bother him as much as they did. somewhere along the way, pretending became harder. the exhaustion. the pressure. the feeling that everything had changed overnight and everyone expected them to act like it hadn't.
he kept telling himself he was handling it, but he wasn't. instead of admitting that, instead of saying anything about how frustrated and lost he had been feeling, he had taken it out on the person who he viewed as his little brother. niki. which made him feel even worse.
it was rare that the dorm was empty except for the two of them. lately, it felt like everyone had found reasons to spend less time there. schedules helped, but they weren't the only reason. something had shifted over the last few months. conversations ended sooner. meals were quieter. everyone seemed to disappear into their own rooms whenever they had the chance.
jake didn't question where everyone else was. he wasn't sure he wanted the answer. he found niki in the living room and lingered near the doorway for a second before taking a few slow steps forward.
"hey." his voice came out quieter than usual. "can we talk?" he stopped himself from getting any closer, leaving enough space between them that niki could decide whether he even wanted to entertain the conversation. a small breath escaped him. "i know earlier was bad." his gaze dropped to the floor. "like, really bad." silence settled between the words while he searched for something that didn't sound rehearsed. "i shouldn't have said what i said. it was wrong of me, and i know that."
he rubbed the back of his neck absentmindedly, unable to look up right away. "you were joking around. that's what we do." his train of thought slipped away, the apology he'd rehearsed in his head suddenly out of order. "you didn't deserve any of it."

katarinabluu: zephyr. in gangnam. katarinabluu: i'm on my way there. i'll be waiting for you.
jake: got it. i'll be on my way. eta is 20.
katarinabluu: i'm not one to usually do this katarinabluu: but katarinabluu: come with me to a bar?
────── @jaaake
jake: yeah, i'll come. which bar are we meeting at?
the gym wasn't exactly where jake expected to find a sense of home. between the metallic clang of weights, the hum of treadmills, and whatever playlist was currently fighting for its life through the speakers, there wasn't much about it that reminded him of australia. and yet, somehow, the second he spotted a familiar face across the room, the feeling settled in anyway. a grin immediately pulled at his lips.
"aye, there he is!"
jake abandoned the dumbbells he'd been pretending to enjoy and made his way over, shaking his head as he got closer. he hadn't seen chris properly in what felt like forever. schedules had a habit of getting in the way of things lately.
stopping beside him, jake reached out to give his shoulder a light shove before grabbing a nearby towel to wipe at the sweat collecting along the back of his neck.
"how've you been?" he asked, genuinely curious. "besides getting ripped. do you get bigger each time i see you?" jake asks, hand already testing out chris' arm.

🌟 Jake [weverse 20260423]
Her fingers loosely, absentmindedly, trace over her chest, playing with a necklace that she's wearing. A soft huff escapes her as she watches a video, something silly, mind-numbing, not at all important but distracting enough to pass the time.
8:55pm
Karina stretches, a little languid and lazy, before moving off the bed and towards the door. She never actually heard back from him, never knew whether he would arrive or not, but something in her says to go and check anyway. There's no sound as she walks quietly through the apartment, hair loose and falling down her back while the robe slips open and shows a little more skin than appropriate.
Not that anything about this would be considered as such.
The knock comes as soon as she reaches it and a pleased smile plays on her lips as she opens it. There he is~. That charming smile looking at her like he's here for any reason other than what's offered.
"I do admire a man who knows how to be on time." Karina opens the door wider, stepping out of the way as she invites him in. "And one who can follow instructions." There's that teasing tone, the one she uses only when needed rather than often. The one that keeps men coming back for more.
jake’s gaze flickers the second the door opens, quick and instinctive before it settles back on her face like it never left in the first place. it’s automatic, the way he smooths into it, into the version of himself that knows exactly how to respond, how to exist in moments like this without thinking too hard about anything else. "guess i’m full of surprises tonight."
his voice is easy, light enough to match hers, like he didn’t almost sit in his car and drive off instead. like showing up was always the plan. he steps inside when she moves, brushing past her just close enough to register without lingering. "instructions weren’t that complicated," he adds after a beat, glancing back at her over his shoulder, the hint of a smirk tugging at his mouth like it belongs there. it’s all practiced. effortless in a way that doesn’t require him to think about anything beneath it.
not the quiet that followed him here, not the empty spaces he’s been avoiding filling with anything real. not the way everything lately feels just slightly off, like he’s a step behind in his own life. he just leans into the doorway further inside, head tilting slightly as his eyes land back on her, expression unreadable for half a second too long before it shifts again.
"besides, i did tell you that i came fully trained."

The brush of Jake’s shoulder lands and stays longer than it should in his head. Heeseung lets himself lean into the railing instead. "Mm," he hums at the mention of practice, like it’s just another passing detail. But his jaw tightens faintly, something flickering behind his gaze before it disappears just as fast. "Sounds about right."
He doesn’t ask anything else. Jake’s teasing earns a small exhale... almost a laugh, but not quite. Heeseung dips his head slightly, nudging back when Jake bumps him again, softer this time, easier to respond to than anything else being said. "Dramatic?" he repeats, glancing over at him briefly. "You’re the one who showed up late." His chuckle comes out just enough. For a moment, he considers saying something more... something real, something that explains the pauses, the distance, the way everything feels just slightly out of place. He doesn’t.
"It’s less crowded..." he says instead "Figured you’d appreciate that more than a noisy cafe or something."
jake lets out a quiet scoff at that, shaking his head a little as he leans more of his weight back against the railing. "i wasn’t that late," he smirks. "you’re right, though," he adds after a moment, glancing back out at the water. "this is better." it’s quieter. easier to exist in without having to fill every second with something.
his fingers tap lightly against the metal railing, restless again before he pushes himself off it with a small exhale. standing still suddenly feels like too much, like if he stays there any longer, the silence might start pressing in where he doesn’t want it to. "c’mon," jake says, tilting his head down the path, already taking a step before fully looking at him. "let’s walk or something."
"i’ve been cooped up in practice rooms all week," he continues, voice lighter again, slipping back into that casual rhythm even if there’s a bit of tiredness dragging underneath it. "if i stand in one place any longer, i might actually lose it. plus," jake adds, nudging him lightly as he starts moving, "you owe me at least a decent walk if you’re gonna drag me out to your secret sad-boy river spot." it’s teasing, easy on the surface, but he doesn’t look at him for long after, gaze drifting ahead instead as he falls into step beside him.

katarinabluu: my place. 9 o'clock. don't be late x katarinabluu: [ katarinabluu sent an address ]
The woman places the seed, gives him the option. There's no expectation for him to show up but she doesn't give him a chance to question if she's serious or not.
If she wasn't — she wouldn't have sent the address.
Relaxing on her bed, satin robe loosely tied as she scrolls through her phone, not quite waiting for him to show up — but definitely wondering if he will.
jake reads the message more times than he needs to, thumb pressing down on the message to copy her address as if his body already made the decision.
8:52 finds him outside her place anyway, engine off but keys still in his hand, shoulders slumped forward as he stares through the windshield like he might find a reason to leave if he waits long enough. he doesn’t. he never really does lately. it’s easier not to think about it, about anything, really. when there’s somewhere else to be, someone else to focus on, even if it’s temporary. especially if it’s temporary.
by the time he actually gets out of the car, he’s already smoothed everything over. expression neutral, steps steady. he doesn’t knock right away, just leans there for a second, jaw tightening before he finally lifts his hand and taps against the door. when it opens, he doesn’t say much at first. just a small, easy curve of his lips, something practiced and light that doesn’t quite reach anywhere deeper. "your package is here"
It has been a while since they managed to catch up, to hang out and do something that wasn't to do with their work, and Chris knows that. "Yeah, it's been too long. So much has been happening."
Between tours and schedules and comebacks galore, Chris knows that they both have had their fair share of chaos lately so knowing that they'll be able to sit down and actually hang out causes a slight amount of tension to ease from his shoulders. It'll be nice to be reminded of home again.
He laughs and shakes his head, "don't worry, half the time, do we ever know what is happening with the game? As long as my team wins, I'll be happy." They are surrounded by staff the moment they are off the stage, helping them remove their mic packs, guiding them whichever way they need to go. "Wash up and then meet at mine in a hour or so? I've got some beers in the fridge so we can just order food when you get there."
It feels like such a normal thing to do, invite the bro over for a game and food, not thinking about what schedule they have on tomorrow or even what fans will say. Just two men, enjoying their bonding time over rugby league — like they would back home.
jake nodded along as chris spoke, a quiet understanding settling in his expression at the mention of everything getting hectic lately. "yeah, it’s been a lot," he admitted, voice softer for a second, like he didn’t need to spell it out for him to get it. there was something grounding about it, though standing here, talking like this, like no time had really passed.
he huffed out a laugh at that, shoulders loosening as staff started to gather around them. "honestly, i just go off vibes half the time," he joked, dimples showing as he glanced over. "if everyone else looks stressed, i assume something important happened."
as his mic pack was being taken off, he shifted a little closer, nodding easily. "yeah, that sounds good. i’ll head over after i clean up," he said, already sounding more relaxed at the idea. "missed that, you know? just normal stuff like this." his grin came back. "don’t start without me though. if your team wins before i get there, i’m calling it rigged."
The river was quieter than he remembered. Heeseung stood near the railing, hands tucked into the pockets of his hoodie as a soft breeze brushed past him, carrying the distant hum of the city. It wasn’t late enough for the crowds to disappear completely, but it was quiet enough that no one paid him any real attention and that’s what he needed. Quiet. Space. Something that didn’t feel like a stage or a waiting room or a conversation he hadn’t prepared for. His phone sat heavy in his pocket, the last message still open.
“I’m here.” He’d typed it three times before sending it, deleting words that felt too formal. Anything that sounded like things had changed more than they should’ve. They hadn’t. At least… that’s what he kept telling himself.
Heeseung exhaled slowly, gaze drifting across the water as it reflected broken pieces of light. He wondered if Jake would notice anything different. If they would be different. His fingers flexed slightly in his pocket. He hadn’t seen Jake alone like this since... No... he cut the thought off before it could settle. A small shift of his weight, and then he glanced over his shoulder briefly just to catch Jake arriving.
"Hey," he muttered under his breath, smile barely forming.
@jaaake
jake almost doesn’t show up. he sits in his car longer than he should, fingers tapping restlessly against the steering wheel while his phone screen dims and lights back up again. nothing about this should feel off. but everything lately does, and jake’s gotten pretty good at dodging anything that might force him to actually sit in it. still he ends up here anyway. he steps out, his eyes find heeseung quickly, lingering for just a second too long before he starts walking over.
"hey," jake echoes, voice lighter than he feels. he slows just a little when he gets close, like he’s not sure if he should go for something more some kind of hug, but he doesn’t. instead, he settles beside him, shoulder brushing his in a quiet half-second of contact before he leans back against the railing.
"you’ve got good timing," he mutters, glancing out at the water instead of right at him. "we just finished practice not that long ago." his tongue pressing briefly against the inside of his cheek before he huffs out something that could almost pass as a laugh.
he bumps his shoulder against heeseung’s again, lighter this time, trying to pull things back into something easier. "didn’t think you’d go all dramatic and pick a riverside meetup," he adds, glancing over."what is this, some kind of movie scene or something?" his gaze drifts back out over the water, quiet for a beat before he tilts his head just enough toward him again. "or are you just trying to impress me?" he says, softer, the tease slipping back in even if it doesn’t land as smoothly as it used to. he nudges him again. "kinda worked, not gonna lie."

A hand clasps on the other man's shoulder as they wait for the female idols to start moving off stage. "Hey man, how's it going?" He grins, knowing fans are going absolutely wild over the interaction. Lately, Chris has been talking about hanging out with his Aussie Ois and Jake has happened to be one of them. "What are you doing after this?" He looks over his shoulder and waves at some of the flashing cameras as they begin to make their way off stage. "I think there's a game on soon, was going to have a couple and watch — if you're down?" While he may not talk about it a lot, Chris is a huge sports fan — especially when it comes to league.
jake’s face lit up the second the hand landed on his shoulder, grin coming easy like it always did around chan. "hey, been good," he answered, giving his arm a quick squeeze in return, dimples showing as he glanced out at the crowd before leaning in a little. "feels like it’s been a minute since we actually got to talk."
he followed chan’s gaze toward the cameras, offering a small wave of his own before looking back at him, interest already piqued. "a game?" he echoed, brows lifting slightly. "you already know i’m not saying no to that." his smile tugged wider, a little more relaxed now that they were moving off stage together. "couple drinks, good game… yeah, i’m in. just don’t get mad when i start yelling at the screen like i actually know what i’m talking about."
