30ml/1oz of Cointreau or Triple Sec”

10ml/0.3oz of Fresh Lime Juice

90ml/3oz of Cranberry Juice

Chill your martini glass

Pour your Vodka, Cointreau/Triple Sec, Lime Juice and Cranberry Juice into the Boston Shaker

Add Ice up to the brim of the shaker

Shake hard

Strain into your Martini Glass

Garnish with a slice of Lime Or Orange if you want to.

30ml/1oz of Vodka

Orange Juice

Cranberry Juice

Fill the Highball glass with Ice.

Pour the Peach Schnapps over the ice.

Pour the Vodka over the ice.

Top off the glass with equal parts Orange and Cranberry Juice.

This drink is typically garnished with a slice of Orange, on the side of the glass.

So, I’ve been thinking about this for a while now and I’ve finally made a decision so…

I really like making cocktails, I love it, and I want to do it more and more, but it’s just too expensive to be able to do as much as I want to, so, I have decided to create a Patreon. This way I’ll be able to offer to you the option, if you would like to see more cocktails more often, of supporting the bar. 

Now, I do not expect anyone to feel like they have to give me money, this is simply an way of letting those who wish to help support this blog do so.

So, Lets talk Alcohol safety! Throughout this post I will be referencing data and other figures that are present in the RSA (Responsible Service of Alcohol) guide in Victoria, Australia, however I will try to make as much of the information applicable to everyone.

For some context, a RSA is a requirement for ANY person to obtain before selling or serving alcohol in Australia, it teaches Alcohol safety, how to identify when a person is drunk and how to safely deal with a person if they’re drunk.

So, what are the golden rules?

DO NOT serve anyone underage (I will go in depth more later)

RECOGNIZE intoxication and try to not serve anyone to the point of obvious intoxication

DO NOT serve anyone who is already intoxicated

DISCOURAGE people from taking part in activities that could cause harm to either themselves or others. 

Alcoholic Content of drinks

A standard drink is usually defined as a drink that contains approximately 10 grams (or 0.35274oz) (disclaimer: A standard drink in America is approximately 14 grams of pure alcohol) of pure alcohol.

This amount is usually contained in:

30ml/1oz of Spirits

60ml/2oz of Port

100ml/3.8oz of Red or White Wine

100ml/3.8oz of Sparkling Wine

285ml/9.6oz (a pot) of Full Strength Beer

It is important to remember that a standard drink and a standard glass size are not always the same thing. Wine is usually served in 200ml/6.7oz glasses, which is about 2 standard drinks.

Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC)

Alcohol is absorbed into the bloodstream as you drink, which carries alcohol to the brain, this is where it beings to effect you, causing the loss of inhibitions and judgement.

BAC is the amount of alcohol in the blood stream and is measured by the number of grams of alcohol in 100ml of blood. For example, a BAC of 0.05 means that 0.5 grams of alcohol is present in 100ml of blood.

The effect of alcohol on a person can be different due to many different factors, some of which are:

Age

Size

Gender

Amount of Muscle Mass

Health

Age

Medication 

Illicit drugs

Sobering Up

So, how do we sober up? I’ve had many arguments with people, friends, family and anything in between on how to sober up, many believe certain foods, other alcoholic drinks, cold showers, coffee, vomiting, urinating etc etc is the way to sober up. Despite how widely believed all of these are, many of them do not work at all and the ones that do only account for less than 5%-14% of the alcohol in your body COMBINED.

So, how do we sober up? Time, 90% of the alcohol in your body is processed through the liver, which means the only sure way of sobering up is by waiting. A Healthy Liver can process about 1 standard drink an hour (10 grams of pure alcohol) which means the more you drink the longer it takes to sober up.  But Izzy! What about the other 10%?! The other 10% of alcohol leaves your body through your lungs (breathing), Sweating and Urination.

So, most of you think of being hungover when talking about sobering up, so first, what is a hangover? While the causes are not entirely understood at a biological level we do know that it is caused by excess drinking of alcohol, A hangover is an intense state of dehydration. Make sure to drink plenty of water during any drinking sessions and after!
