Oh, I have a bed, I just do not see the need to use one. Why would one lie down when there are countless subjects and projects to peruse?

No lead up to this, just come out and ask me it? This of all things? Excuse me, I have...something incredibly important I need to attend to that isn't this.

OOC (spoilers for King of the Dead novel):

I assume you mean Irik, Azalin's son, and not his beloved brother. His son was 19 when he was executed as a traitor to the crown by Azalin's (or The Azal'Lan as he was known as at the time) own hand.

Most of his reputation, in my game, was passed down through his prominent apprentices. I did ask my players what they thought of him once they were out of Hazlan; my players said that Hazlik seemed super intimidating because if his apprentices were strong adepts of magic and those who displease the zulkir are generally dealt with, then how strong is Hazlik?

I personally think it depends on whether Hazlik has something to gain in the interaction. When my players encountered him, because Hazlik knew he had something they wanted, he felt carefree enough to casually flaunt his magic power. That definitely caught the party's attention and made them less likely to speak out of turn and consider their words a bit more carefully. Hazlik is a man who likes to keep up appearances about being the strongest caster out there, and he's more then willing to casually show off if it means getting valuable allies or pawns to do things for him.

If he feels as though the party can threaten him, then instead of using his spells benevolently (in my game on a first interaction I had Hazlik grant the party a Heroes Feast and give a couple minor magic items among a few other things), I'd use his spells in a much more "I will show you how easily I can destroy you if you piss me off" kind of way. Once Hazlik felt a bit threatened, I had him kill one of his apprentices in front of the party. I can't quite remember the spell I used but it was enough for the party to be like 'ok so we're not getting on Hazlik's bad side, yeah? Cool.'
