~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When one attempts to go on with their life, it is because a change as happened.
For her, the biggest change.
No longer was she apart of the land of the living. But she was not dead either.
Nonetheless, she still went on with her life.
Sure, she could no longer enjoy her favorite foods. All human food, all tastes like carboard or soap. No taste at all. She could no longer bathe in the sun on a nice day. The moon was just as nice. For a while, she had to call out of work. As the smell of blood made her 'nauseous'. She was sick. A stomach bug. Her boss of course understood. She was very loved.
"Take all the time you need! Just call us whenever you're ready to come on back." They told her.
She prayed and prayed. Prayed for forgiveness. Forgiveness for a sin she never took part in. For the thirst she now struggled with. The thoughts she could no longer control.
Even more, for the hate she had for the man who 'saved' her life.
At first, she would not have any more contact with Louis. She didn't want too. When she first awoke, he explained what happened. How she was attacked by a creature of the night. How he had saved her and would train her in all she needed to know. The changes that were happening in her. She cried. Cried and for the first time in a long time, cursed at him. Told him to leave her alone. Running away from him, she was determined to figure this all out herself.
It was only when she couldn't help her thirst, and she slipped up. That she only had one person she could call.
She was angry at herself. “I’m so stupid.” She muttered, waiting for Louis to come and help her.
“What happened?” He asked, kneeling down to examine the body.
“He…He was hurting a woman. And I just…I couldn’t help myself…”
Louis showed her the ropes. How to clean up. When to stop. How to control the thirst. How to make food taste better to blend in.
The person who had cursed her, was now her only hope at moving forward.
Time went on. And slowly, she found forgiveness for him. She had too. Eternity was too long to cling to such pain.
The two formed a friendship once more. More so built on survival, more than anything.
She went back to work. Continuing on with life as usual. Finding more ways to feed than just blood. Anything, to be able to stay as human as possible.
Her feeding was only upon those who deserved it. Refusing to harm anyone innocent. She learned how to read people. Their minds, how they worked.
She never saw it as a suffering. No. Rather…a justice. And slowly, she began to see her vampirism as a gift. A gift to bring peace and protection to those who needed it.
The year was now 1971. It was September. She was older. Mentally at least. Physically she still looked twenty three. She had stayed at the bookstore where she worked still. Taking night shifts as often as she could. Saying how she got a second job and it would take up most of her time during the day. No asked questions.
Her thirst more under control.
Life, for the most part. Had become extremely normal.
On the 23rd, she was in the bookstore once more.
The time was 7:30pm. The clock ticking seemed more prominent now. Everything did. Her senses being heightened freaked her out at first. But of course, she grew used to it.
Not expecting anyone in, she continued reading her book at the counter. She was drinking her ‘Tea.’ More so, she has pricked her finger, and dipped into the drink. Allowing the blood to make it more tolerable to drink.
She was in her own world, when the bell ringing from the door opening snapped her out of it.
Soft footsteps. A soft heartbeat. And a male, by the smell. She could hear it, letting them approach. Closing the book gently, she raised her head to see who it was.
“Welcome in, is there anything I could do to help? We just had a new shipment of poetry come in!” Her voice spoke, just as it had a hundred times before.
But what she didn’t expect, was that Michael Jackson would step into her bookstore.
“No thank you mam. I’m just browsing.” He smiled at her. Dressed in a simple black sweater and jeans. A white collar. His smile was sweet. Gentle. Genuine.
“Alright,” she nodded, “Just let me know if you need anything!”
He walked off, looking around the bookstore. And she couldn’t help herself. Listening in on his thoughts. Usually, human thoughts were remnant on a few things,
Sex. Food. And I wanna go home.
Michael’s wasn’t any of them.
His mind instead was focused on the words found on the pages of the books he had found. Some were funny.
‘And she still didn’t leave him? Girlfriend, that man has your nose wide open!’
‘No feeling. No warmth. It’s just too sad.’
But the ones that really caught her attention, were the ones about her
‘Gosh, she’s so pretty…Her eyes. I’ve never seen anything like them.’
She was used to it. Many costumers would have thoughts about her. But many were not so kind. So, she learned to silence her mind. To not read them.
But his mind, in the short amount of time he was in the shop, was one of the gentlest she had ever seen. It was almost relieving to listen too. Some people caused her headaches. Michael felt like a cup of lavender tea on a sunny day.
Eventually, Michael slowly approached her once more. Coughing to get her attention. She pretended to be shocked. As if she wasn’t intensely listening to his footsteps to see when he would finally walk up to her.
“Hey! Find everything okay?” She asked, setting her book aside. Giving him all of her attention.
“Yes mam,” He replied, his voice sweet. “Just this please.”
Taking the book from him, their fingers brushed. But she remained calm. Pretending not to notice when his heartbreak picked up.
“This your first time in here?” She asked, making small talk.
“Oh? Yes! I-I mean. I’ve lived here for a while. But I never really came in here. Always sorta passed it.”
“Wow, just ignoring little ole us down here. How rude.” She teased, shaking her head at him. Taking her sweet time wrapping up his book.
“No, no! It wasn’t like that-“
“I’m teasing you baby.” She chuckled, hearing his heartbeat pick up even more.
“Oh, right.” He chuckled as well. Relieved. The last thing he wanted to do was offend her.
Especially a pretty woman like her.
“So,” he cleared his throat, “How long have you worked here then?”
She placed his new book on the counter, leaning forward slightly and crossing her arms. “Well, for a good few years now. Started when I was 17. It’s not much, but I do enjoy it.”
He nodded, smiling at her words. Simple living. How he wished he had that.
“It seems nice here. If I could I would work here.” He shrugged, “Oh, and how much?”
“Depends, you renting or buying the book?”
She nodded, chuckling at his nervousness. Finding it adorable. “It’s cheaper to rent it. But if you like it so much, you can come back and buy it permanently.”
He nodded, “Then I’ll rent it.”
The transaction was quick and easy. The two continuing to chat. He asked about her favorite types of books. She told him. And asked him about his. He said how he loved mostly fantasy books. Where the hero always prevails over the villain.
“Alrighty, you are good to go!” She smiled at him. Handing him his receipt. “The book is due back here in about a week. But we don’t charge late fee. Just bring the book back in good condition and we’ll take it.”
He nodded, “Thank you so much.” Beginning to walk away, but he turned around after internal conversation. “Hey, what’s your name? I don’t think I’ve seen you around here before.”
‘Well yeah. The sun would kill me.’
She told him her name, “and yours?” She extended her hand out. Making him come back over and shaking her head.
“Michael. Michael Jackson.”
“Oh yeah! Now I recognize you. I wondered why you looked familiar.” She lied. But she could see into his mind his need for some normalcy. “The store owner loves your music.”
“And you?” He asked, suddenly growing confident.
She smiled again, chuckling, “I like your music. Especially that new album of yours that came out.”
“Oh yeah?” He smiled, feeling proud. More specifically, thankful. She wasn’t bombarding him with questions of an autograph. Nor asking him for any sort of favors. Mostly how normal she had treated him after she recognized him. No screaming. No freaking out. Just a simple smile and a compliment.
She liked his music. His work.
It made him even more proud.
He smiled at her once more, ‘She’s so sweet.’
He finally said his goodbyes. Forcing himself to start leaving. Knowing bill would want to go back soon.
Turning around as he pushed the door open with his back, “I’ll see you soon!” He said to her. His voice filled with a new excitement. His footsteps going further and further. Until she watched him go into his car and drive off. One heartbeats turned into two. So she knew someone was thankfully with him.
She sighed as he drove away. A small flutter in her chest. Knowing that she most likely would actually never see him again. Michael would probably come in the daylight. He belonged to the sun. The world of life.
She belonged now to the moon. The world of darkness.
So for now, she would take whatever sweet moments she could.
