MY HEART!!!! 💘
I’m not even sure how it can keep getting worse anymore?
But somehow it does.
It. always. does.

INFO FROM HAIKYUU GUIDEBOOK
a very long on going(?) post of informations i collected from twitter :)
yellow
summary: in which miya atsumu discovers his person– his “yellow”.
pairing: miya atsumu & fem reader
warnings: none i guess??
words: +5.3k
a/n: i’ve seen so many tiktoks of people showing their ‘yellow’ & it makes me :’), so i wanted to write something based off of it and the song!
— i did some research on atsumu to try to have a better understand of him (even tho he’s one of my favs lol) so if the characterization is off, i apologize! if you have feedback on how to better write him i would appreciate it! (also finding out ‘tsumu had no friends growing up had me so EMO like my poor baby)
and everything you do yeah, they were all yellow.
You were all Atsumu ever knew. Well, besides his brother who was always there. But even on the days where Osamu wasn’t, you were there.
Sometimes there’d be bickering between his twin here and there, sometimes it’d lead to more than just some petty insults thrown back and forth. There’d be days where he wouldn’t speak to Osamu– probably for the dumbest reason– and he’d always find his way to you to rant about how annoying Osamu was.
You’d always laugh at how angry he tried to seem, yet you could see through him so easily. If it was a big argument, usually by the third day of not speaking to his twin, he’d get very anxious and you’d always be the one to save the day by somehow getting them to speak. Whether it be making the two over six-feet-tall boys sit together and talk about their feelings. (To which they’d always end up apologizing to each other in about five minutes). Or you giving each of them their favorite snacks and telling them it was from their twin, one of them making their way to their twin to apologize for “being dumb”.
In fact, it had always been like that. You had been the peace-keeper since you were kids. Whenever they were angry at each other, you’d always find a way to fix issues between them. You couldn’t imagine life without the twins, they brought happiness into your life and made your days a whole lot better. Neither could they imagine life without you. Especially Atsumu.
“‘Tsumu have you done the worksheets that were assigned yesterday?” You asked, leaning by the door that led to the Miyas’ backyard where you found Atsumu practicing, like always.
He shook his head, not even glancing towards you, far too busy to look in your direction. His eyes were only focused on the volleyball he kept throwing back and forth.
“Me and ‘Samu finished studying by the way, I can help you with some homework and studying if you’d like,” you smiled, yet all you got from the thirteen-year-old boy were grunts he’d let out as he tried to perfect his sets.
“‘Tsumu? You’re currently not doing to well in our English class, sensei asked me to try and help you. I know I may seem annoying but-”
“You’re not annoying,” he quickly cut in, still not looking in your direction. He didn’t very much like being disrupted while he practiced, but he didn’t mind you surprisingly.
He had always hated noise whenever he was practicing his serves or serving during games, yet he could never feel anger at the sweet voice that belonged to you.
“Give me a few more minutes and I’ll be inside soon to study.”
You nodded with a smile, “I’ll be waiting ‘Tsumu.”
If it weren’t for your reminders and constant help towards your best friend, Miya Atsumu wouldn’t know what to do. You were the one who could always snap him out of his moments, the one who would always scold him whenever he was being to harsh on others, and who’d– to his dismay– make him apologize to the girls he’d be extremely rude to whenever they’d confess their crush for him.
“Why do I have to apologize? It’s not my fault I don’t like her!”
“Atsumu, it’s not nice to laugh in people’s face whenever they confess their feelings,” you said, “now go.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
“I’m not doing it.”
“Atsumu.”
“Fine,” he rolled his eyes. He hated having to apologize, but he’d hate you being mad at him even more. He’d once ignored you, and you didn’t speak to him for days which only led to him following you around like a lost puppy all throughout school.
… i wrote a song for you and all the things you do and it was called ‘yellow’ …
“‘Samu told me you had a bad day today, what’s wrong?” You asked, sitting down on the left side of his bed– ‘your side’ of the bed as he claimed that he ‘hated’ when you sat on his side.
The fifteen-year-old boy sitting across from you only stared at you with a blank face. “Nothing’s wrong, he’s just being annoying like always.”
“There’s something definitely wrong, you know how I know? You don’t have that annoying smirk on your face, and you’ve been pretty quiet today too, ‘Tsumu. I don’t want to bother, but you know I care about your feelings and you can always speak to me.”
“You could never bother me,” shaking his head not ever wanting you to feel like you’re a bother to him (not that you could ever be), “today was just awful. Before I got to practice this morning, some of the upperclassmen were talking about how they disliked me– more so how I acted– but still.”
“‘Tsumu, you’re a good person and the opinion of a few people shouldn’t matter.”
“But that’s the thing,” he sighed, his voice coming out softer that before, “it isn’t just a few people. It’s most of the team, probably even the entire school. I’m the rude, selfish, and arrogant twin— the one everyone is afraid of and probably hates.”
Your brows furrowed, almost in disbelief that he could think of himself in that way. His head placed on your shoulder as your fingers ran through his blonde hair, you let out a soft sigh.
“You’re not selfish, nor rude or arrogant. You work your ass off everyday practicing to be able to perfectly set to everyone on the team, you try to always make the best possible toss for them, and you think that’s being selfish? Spending so much of your time improving to make the team even better? Time you could spend on others things, but you don’t because you want to grow as a player and help your teammates as best as you can. You’re not arrogant either, you’re confident in yourself. It’s a big difference, we all know you’re amazing, why would you have to be ashamed of your talent?”
“Sometimes you can come off as rude, but I don’t think it’s intentional sometimes. But either way, teasing is in your nature and some people just don’t understand you’re not actually serious most of the time. Plus, you have expectations for your teammates and you want them to give their everything, just like you do. There’s nothing wrong with that, you want the hard work to pay off.”
Despite how popular the Miya Twins were throughout school anywhere they went, Atsumu had always had trouble making friends. Especially when he was younger. Truthfully, Atsumu didn’t have any friends growing up (besides you and Osamu– which he didn’t even know if he could count his brother because he was automatically his friend). Whenever you weren’t at school or Osamu was busy with getting help during break, he felt the loneliest.
He wasn’t used to having friends, and it was usually why he didn’t know when he had gone too far during a joke. He’d bicker with his brother and call each other names, but he knew Osamu never took it to the heart because they were brothers. And as for you, he could never be rude to you because he cared so much about you, the last thing he wanted was to hurt your feelings and lose you. But you always reassured him he’d never lose you, you’d known him for too long now and you knew his teasing was never something serious.
“They don’t know the real you, and maybe they don’t even deserve to.”
After minutes of silence, only audible sound was the rush of air that would enter through his bedroom window, he spoke up. “You think my smirk is annoying,” he said with a pout as he looked up from his hands to face you. His eyes finally meeting yours, no longer seeming sad.
You rolled your eyes, “that’s what you got from all that Atsumu? I hate you.”
He let out a laugh, “please, you could never hate me. I am Atsumu after all.”
“Well hate is a strong word, maybe I don’t hate you. Maybe I just only dislike you.”
And maybe I love you. . well at least that’s what he had wished to say in the moment but the last thing he wanted was to ruin a moment like this with introducing what he thought were unwanted feelings.
“Maybe I only dislike you too,” you laughed. The sound of your laugh making him smile.
You were the one always there to reassure his heart. To make him feel important, to let him know that he had someone who cared for him even if others didn’t. That he had a person to save him whenever he felt like he was drowning— to reassure his heart that he’d be okay.
He felt that happiest when he was by your side. He knew he could be himself with no worries, with no fear of judgement, and that he could be just Atsumu. Not the ‘arrogant and childish Miya twin’ everyone knew.
Not to mention everything you did was perfect in his eyes. Well, you were perfect to him.
All the little things you did for him was enough to make his heart flutter and cause the butterflies in his stomach to appear. Just hearing your laugh was enough to make his cheeks a rosy color and make him smile like an idiot.
From the small jokes you’d make to hear him laugh during your walk to school. To the study sessions you’d force him to have with you because he’d always forget to study for major tests, or how’d you bring him lunch whenever he was running late because he overslept after staying up late practicing. And even stopping by the gym before heading home, to remind him to drink enough water during practice and get enough sleep when he got home because “we can’t have Japan’s next best setter die from dehydration or lack of sleep.”
He loved everything about you. From the way you took care of him and his heart, how you looked after him, and how you always showed how much you cared about not only him but all your friends. You were the sweetest thing on earth (as he would tell you).
No one could ever take your place in his heart, despite how many girls chased after him (and his brother) the second he entered Inarizaki High. He sometimes didn’t even understand how you could be so kind you were to everyone despite how rude some girls were towards you for just being friends with him and his brother.
…you know i love you so i swam across, i jumped across for you, oh what a thing to do ‘cause you were all yellow…
There was not a thing Miya Atsumu wasn’t willing to do for you. He’d do absolutely anything to keep your heart safe and happy. And whenever something was bothering you, it was no longer just your problem but his as well because he’d never let his “pretty girl” be upset.
“Tell me where he is, please,” he begged, his eyes showing desperation as he tried his best to get you to tell him where the ‘ugly little boy’ who decided playing with your heart was funny.
“Atsumu, no, you’re going to end up arguing or fighting with him and I really don’t need that now. Especially not when you’re already dealing with fixing your grades to be able to start upcoming games, getting in a fight is the last thing you need.”
But seeing you so upset was the last thing he ever wanted to see.
“We never said we were dating, I guess I just thought he’d finally be someone who wouldn’t use me for once and it was my mistake for thinking he wouldn’t be the same,” you added, your tears no longer running down as much as they had been when you had found Atsumu.
“But that doesn’t give him the right to lead you on for months, leave you, and then kiss someone in front of you!” He argued back in a somewhat soft tone, anger still evident in his voice though. He didn’t know whether he was more angry or upset.
“You’re the most beautiful girl inside and out, as cliché as that sounds, it’s the truth and it’s his fault for not seeing that. He doesn’t deserve you, many people don’t deserve you.”
He wanted to be that person. He wanted to be worthy of your heart. But his self doubt was what prevented him from ever trying to be that person, he didn’t want to ruin things between the two of you and did he really think that he was worthy of your heart?
Maybe if he’d set his doubt aside, you’d finally stop spending time with people who weren’t worth your time. Maybe Atsumu would stop comparing everyone to you because you’d finally be his. He was filled with the fear of ruining the friendship that could never be replaced.
“But I know that there’s someone who is worthy of you and they’ll protect and cherish your heart, pretty girl,” he spoke softly, placing a small kiss to the top of your head.
Many things were on his mind, but all he wanted to do was just hold you. And it was what he did, his hand rubbed small circles on your back as he kept you close to his body, never wanting to let go.
Atsumu loved you, and as much as he wanted to listen to you about ignoring the idiot who hurt you, he couldn’t. Atsumu had never seemed as scary as he did when he faced him, and you knew something had happened between the two of them. Because the next day, the douchebag ended up apologizing to you and asked for forgiveness for what he did, which was extremely strange for someone who had seemed so rude and cocky the day before to then end up actually seeming so apologetic the next day.
Atsumu definitely had something to do with it, but you never questioned it. How could you when he was doing everything to make you happy again, no one but the blonde-haired boy occupied your mind.
What else could occupy your mind besides Miya Atsumu?
“Hey! It’s not funny! I tried my very best,” he pouted as he showed you his attempt at making a sushi roll.
“‘Tsumu, it isn’t very difficult,” you said, unable to contain your laugh as you looked at his horribly rolled up ‘sushi roll’ that instead looked like a lump of rice with all the contents sticking out, “how did yours even end up looking like that!”
“Osamu’s the one good at this cooking shit, thought ya knew this,” he rolled his eyes, yet his heart did leaps as he had finally seen you genuinely smile for the first time in a week. He had been trying his best to cheer you up after what had happened with the “dumb ugly idiot who sucks” (as he called him). He had meant something to you— which Atsumu hated but he was doing everything he could to make you forget him.
“Ya know if you keep making fun of my amazing sushi rolling skills, I won’t ever make those damn cookies ya love,” he added. Atsumu was not the best cooker or baker to be frank, but he somehow knew how to bake one thing and that was your favorite cookies, of course. (You really did love them, he had to bake them quite often because you always found yourself craving them).
“I take it back! I take it all back!”
“Hm. . not very convincing but fine, I’ll make them when I decide to though, since I can forgive you for making fun of me but never forget!”
“I’m sorry! I’ll do anything, but can you make them now though?” You asked with a smile, hoping it was enough to convince him.
“Definitely not.”
“Please!”
“No.”
(He did end up baking you the cookies though. Your night in fact ended with rewatching your favorite show and eating a weird combination of oddly shaped sushi and cookies).
… and it was yellow…
Atsumu had been in denial of his feelings for you for a long time, it was never because he didn’t want to have feelings for your or anything. In fact, he didn’t know anyone else that he could ever truly feel something for besides you.
You were absolutely beautiful, everyone loved you and he knew that by how much people adored you— and the way you’d get little gifts by your desk from different boys almost everyday who happened to have a crush on you. The fact that you were apart of his life was enough to keep his heart content forever.
There were countless of times where’d he think ‘this is when it all began, right?’— when he’d ask himself when he’d fallen in love with you. But in reality, he had began to fall for you from the beginning without even knowing.
It had been during the middle of his junior high. He remembers how dreadful it was when the teacher picked out partners for projects and read out the pairs to the class. He hated it because he’d never get paired up with Osamu, and because he also had to work with some random person in the class who’d probably be too afraid to speak to him.
“I’m guessing you’re Atsumu right? I’m (name) and we’re partners for this assignment,” you smiled, looking down at the boy who’s face was filled with confusion.
Why were you actually nice? And pretty? And how come he’s never seen you? Does he really not pay attention to anyone that he didn’t notice you?
“Do you want to work on it during lunch? Or after school?” You asked, taking a seat next to him.
Why did you actually seem like you didn’t mind working with him? You literally spoke to him with a smile… why weren’t you afraid to talk to him? He had no doubt that you’d probably heard about how ‘rude’ he was because that was the reputation he was stuck with.
“Lunch break is fine.”
“Great! We can work on it during our breaks throughout the week starting tomorrow, see you soon, Atsumu,” you smiled, gathering your belongings and giving him a small wave as you exited the classroom to head to the cafeteria for the break.
He didn’t even get the chance to say goodbye, but the smile on your face had made his cheeks redden the slightest. The small interaction left him with so many questions. Like how he really, really, really wanted to know who you were and why you were nice to to him. He was used to everyone just avoiding him.
Also why did his face feel so warm? Did he have a fever or something? Atsumu was clueless.
The two of you did meet during lunch all throughout that week. You’d usually offer him some of your snacks– you’d share them as he let you listen along to his music. It had been a while since he had spent lunch with someone that wasn’t his brother and his annoying friends. Despite usually being with them, Atsumu always felt out of place with them.
But with you, for once he finally felt like he had an actual friend.
When it was the day before the project was due, he felt a bit (a lot) saddened. Although he had spent little time getting to know you, he’d miss spending lunch with you.
He’d miss whenever you smiled at him every time he shared something about his day, or your laugh and how easily it would make his lips curve upwards into a smile. He enjoyed how easily you found it to talk to him, how kind you were, how you’d always listen when he spoke about his day. Overall, he really enjoyed your company.
Maybe it was weird to want to miss someone who he only really known for about a week, but he couldn’t help it. You were probably the first person in a while to genuinely want to talk to him and actually seem interested.
Although he didn’t want to stop speaking to you just because you’d no longer need to spend time on the assignment, he couldn’t find it in him to let you know.
Maybe you were just being nice for the sake of your grade on this assignment and didn’t actually want to be friends? And he assumed he was right when you packed up your things and left after class had ended, you two no longer needing to really interact anymore due to the project being finished. But just as he was heading out the class, letting out a small sigh realizing he’d be alone again during lunch and back to his old routine, his eyes quickly found yours.
“Hi Atsumu! Well, um… um I-I’m not sure if you’re busy or spending time with anyone– which I totally understand if you are– but would you maybe. . like to eat lunch together? I really enjoyed talking to you but it’s okay if you don’t want to you know? You can say no of course because–”
“I’d really like that!” He almost exclaimed, his cheeks heating up as he began to feel a bit embarrassed at how overly excited he had probably seemed. ‘Overly excited is an understatement’ he thought to himself, cringing at how weird he probably seemed. Possibly lonely.
Atsumu felt overjoyed though, he was glad to know that the way you were acting with him previously had been genuine (and that he’d get to see your pretty face again).
Although he had people he could call his friends, none of them were as important as you were to him. He cared for them all, but when it came to you, his eyes would only focus on you.
He became softer whenever he was around you, which Osamu would tease him about every single time. Just the mention of your name and his cheeks would turn a rosy pink and his lips would form a genuine smile. Atsumu didn’t really understand why he would have such a reaction to you, he was friends with a few other girls in his grade but no one could pull a reaction from him like you’d do.
What he thought of just as a friendship at the time, was the beginning of the friendship (and crush) he cherished most.
No one compared to you. He knew that from the beginning, he’d be crazy to let you go or do anything to hurt your feelings. He could never do something like that to you, not in a million years, and especially not when you had been such an angel to him since the moment you met.
In fact, you were the first person to ever really be nice to him and be genuine about it. Most of the time it had been because he was Osamu’s twin brother and they needed to be nice. Atsumu could always see through most of them– how their words never seemed genuine whenever they tried to start a conversation with him. They most of them didn’t really care about what Atsumu had to say, they just had to be nice because Osamu would probably be upset if they weren’t.
You’d bring him small snacks, or get him a drink from one of the vending machines some days. They were small gestures, but they were enough to make his entire day. You thought about him, you cared, he meant something to you.
There were always thoughts that popped into his head as you’d smile at him when you handed him the snack. He’d always try to get you something as a thank you– although you’d tell him to not worry about getting you something, he enjoyed seeing you smile as he’d bring you your most favorite snacks the very next day.
You didn’t mind staying after school at the library for him when he needed to study. Or walking near his home to wait for him and Osamu so the three of you would talk to school. Or being there to help him during his practices.
He loved how caring you were towards him, that you didn’t expect anything from him, and neither had you cared about what people said about him. Plus, the Atsumu everyone seemed to talk about was nowhere near your Atsumu. The Atsumu that would walk to and from school with you, who would spend his time baking you cookies whenever you were upset, or who cuddled with you after a stressful day and reassure you everything was alright.
Yeah, Atsumu also loved everything about you.
From how caring, selfless, and kind you were. He loved how patient you were with him whenever he was in one of “his moods” or how understanding you were and not once had you ever judged him. He loved your little habits whenever you were nervous, he loved your smile, and your laugh. He loved every single thing about you.
Definitely, no one compared to you, not in a million years, not ever. No one had your beautiful heart, and no one was at beautiful as you. What had he done to deserve you?
Being appreciative of you was an understatement, he was beyond thankful for have been able to meet you. To have been assigned as partners on that assignment, to have been able to get to know you, and to have been able to fall and be in love with you.
You took the time to get to know him, you were there even when he’d shut you out instead of him being a “burden”– he thought he was burden but he could never be that– to you, you were there through the ups and downs. Not once did you ever leave his side, and for you he was eternally grateful.
Maybe he didn’t know when exactly he had fallen in love with you, but since the moment you walked into his life– his life had become brighter. Because everyday forward with you by his side had filled the gap his heart had always felt.
You were the center of his universe, you were the light he had been missing and now that you were here, his world was brighter. It was cliché to say that you brightened up his world, but it wasn’t far from the truth. You had been the one to make him smile and laugh everyday, cheer him up on bad days, and the reason he looked forward to everyday. Everything seemed to be much more beautiful to him when he was happy, you were the reason for his happiness.
You were the most important person to him. The person he probably– actually he knew he did, it just had taken him a while to realize– loved most in this world.
No matter how much time passed, he didn’t think it was possible to not get butterflies in his stomach around you. The smallest things made him love you more and he didn’t think it was possible for his heart to hold so much love for one person only.
You stayed by his side throughout Inarizaki High, through college and pushed him to continue whenever he felt like he was slowly giving up.
When his brother had admitted to him that he wasn’t as passionate for volleyball as Atsumu was and didn’t want to continue with the sport– it had affected him greatly. Because what had kept him going for years– trying to beat his brother at their little competition– was now over and instead of feeling like he had won, he felt like he lost and was lost.
He felt lost because his brother would no longer be by his side during long practices or stressful games. For the first time he’d be alone in the place he thought he’d never be lonely. Sure, growing up he may have been a bit lonely for some times (at least until he met you) but volleyball was where he always had someone. Osamu had always been by his side, and he didn’t know what do to without him.
But you couldn’t let him give up now, he needed to continue working hard because you knew it would pay off. His talent couldn’t just go to waste and the last thing you wanted for Atsumu was to give up what he loved most.
Osamu promised to always be there, even if it wasn’t with his presence on the court, he’d always be there for his twin. Knowing that you and Osamu were there every game was enough, it was what continued to fuel his passion for the sport he loved most. You were happy to see him still continue doing what he loved.
—
“I’m proud of you.”
Atsumu turned to face you with a smile, “for what?”
You shrugged and returned the smile, “I just am, ‘Tsumu.”
Atsumu didn’t miss the gleam in your eyes when you had looked at him with a smile. Your eyes shone bright as they now focused the night sky in front of the both of you. It was a beautiful night, and he couldn’t think of a better way to spend it than with you.
He had picked you up from your job after his training, you were a bit suprised to see Atsumu’s car when you had exited the building. He placed a kiss on your lips the second you were seated in his car. “We have somewhere to be,” he told you with a grin, not elaborating onto where that somewhere could be as he drove away.
And it was how you found yourself at the same place you’d usually go to whenever Atsumu was stressed or just wanted to talk to you with no interruptions. The both of you always sat on the top of same small hill near his old neighborhood to gaze at the stars, that seemed to shine brighter tonight.
This was one of the places he could find peace and comfort, yet being here always brought back a nostalgic feeling.
“You’ve just come so far, ‘Tsumu and I’m so happy for you,” you explained, you honestly didn’t know where all of this was coming from. Maybe because just a few weeks ago Atsumu was offered to play with the MSBY Black Jackals and you couldn’t be more happier for him.
“And I’m happy you’re here with me.”
There was no way anyone could wipe the smile on your face, it was permanent as long as Atsumu was with you.
Atsumu was happy with his friends and the new ones he had recently met, with his job as a professional volleyball player, and with you. He was happy with his life and he loved everything about it.
“I love you,” he added.
You meant absolutely everything to him, there was not a single thing he wouldn’t do for you. Everything about you was perfect. Althought Atsumu sometimes had trouble expressing all the feelings he felt for you and telling you everything he loved about you, you didn’t need any words to let you know because you knew already because the feeling was mutual.
“I love you more than anything in this entire universe, Atsumu.”
Your words were enough to make his cheeks feel like they were on fire. You told each other I love you quite often, but those words never failed to make feel the way he felt the night you had told him ‘I love you’ for the first time during your third year of high school.
Your head now laid on his shoulder, his arm was wrapped around your back, pulling you into his body.
You were his everything. You were his best friend. You were the person who understood him best. You were his soulmate. You were the person he loved most in his life.
You were his yellow.
His heart felt so immensely full as he looked down at your face, your bright eyes staring at the starry night, your lips still formed in a smile. Your beautiful face seeming slightly tired from a long day of work today.
He smiled at how beautiful the stars seemed tonight. Or maybe it was at the small box in the pocket of his jacket that his fingers were just itching to pull out. Or maybe it was just at the mere sight of you.
look at the stars. . look how they shine for you and all the things you do.
I feel like one day, I’m gonna wake up, and everyone will have just given up on me. I wouldn’t even blame them. I feel like a lost cause. I wanna give up on me, too.
What’s your typical day like?
i wake up. i malfunction. i call it a day

“You said you’d stop working two hours ago.”
Peeking towards the direction of Osamu’s voice, you see him leaning against the doorframe, arms crossed. How he manages to look so effortlessly sexy in a pair of grey sweatpants and a black t-shirt baffles you, but you’d be lying if you said you don’t enjoy it.
“I’m almost done, ‘Samu.” Glancing at the bottom corner of your screen, you sigh when the clock reads 03:17AM. After realising the time, your brain decides to make you painfully aware of how stiff you are. It feels like you’re frozen in this shrimp-like position. Taking a minute, you roll your shoulders and crack your neck.
“That’s exactly what you said then, too.” Osamu makes his way where you’re sitting at your desk, bending over to rest his chin on your shoulder. “What’s got you so busy today?”
