I’m tired, but the funny thing is: I’m not actually doing much, at least I don’t think I am.
I feel so tired all the time. Too tired for small tasks I can probably finish within an hour. I put off all these things I need to do because the sheer amount of it all has me overwhelmed to the point of paralysis. The fact that I’m unable to move myself to do anything makes it worse because my tasks pile up even more.
"Take a break” is the default reply to most people who ask for help overcoming cluttered thoughts. Another one I get is simply “don’t let it get to you.” But what happens if I can’t?
I’ve been diagnosed with social anxiety, and it extends beyond social relationships. This is because my anxiety comes from how much I care about how people perceive me and my work, so naturally it affects how I do my job as well. It’s so mentally taxing that I come home just wanting to hit my bed immediately so I can sleep and dream the problems away.
I can’t. They’re in my dreams.
The situation I’m in feels like a constant snowball coming to get me. I find myself looking for anything that might help alleviate the pressure I feel, most of which comes from myself. Anything that can help my mental state whether it’s playing games, getting snacks, or taking a long undeserved nap.
One time, one of my officemates was going out to get coffee and asked me if I wanted anything. I told her I’d love an espresso, a clear signal that I needed something to get me through another day of work I didn’t want to do.
Apparently, the reason for my order was obvious even to the barista preparing my drink. My coffee came back with writing on the cup saying “The best way to get things done is to start,” and this hit me so hard I couldn’t help but laugh.
Laugh I did, but the writing on the cup of coffee was as significant reminder for me that the solution was simple, and that I just ind myself unable to or refusing to do it. It sounds so easy, but it honestly makes me want to cry.
For someone like me, who recently finds herself starting things out already drained, finding the energy and motivation to begin something is usually the most exhausting part about the entire process of getting things done. Maybe it is for you too.
I know what I need to do, and it’s simple. All I need to do is start and hope I get to a point where I’m actually comfortable enough to enjoy my peace.
People have always had discussions about media playing a major role in shaping societies and lives; about how its power and reach can affect people to the level of their decision making and how they perceive their actual environment. But to what extent is media supposed to be able to touch us as individuals that represent a bigger part of our society?
In one of my college classes, we were asked to view some films and reflect on what we learned from watching them. All of the movies were centered on aspects of media such as its influence, acceptability, roles, and workings. I chose writing about two of these, The Truman Show (1998) and Our Brand Is Crisis (2015).
I chose these two movies specifically because I feel like they show how much media can influence the real world but each represent two different aspects of the influential process: The Truman Show representing the side affected by the media, and Our Brand Is Crisis representing the side of he media that affects society.
In The Truman Show, it tells the story of Truman Burbank (Jim Carrey) a man unaware that he has had his whole life played out on television living in a fake town, orchestrated life events, and even with hired actors playing the roles of the people in his life. The studio manipulates Truman into decisions that lead him to stay in the fake town. These manipulations range from events in his life like the staged death of his father in water, to subliminal everyday messages such as Seahaven (the fake town) being names as the best place on Earth. As an adult, Truman realizes there is something wrong when a studio light falls out of his fake sky. He starts wondering about his environment and notices the weirdness of some people’s actions and the seeming fake-ness of it all. At the end of the movie, he is eventually able to escape with the audiences of his life applauding him.
This is actually a movie I watched as a young grade school kid, and even then I was amazed at how a person could be fooled or in a stronger word, manipulated by media in such a way that it makes up their whole life. However, re-watching the film now that I am older made me see deeper into the movie and reflect on it more. The media here is not just the program tricking Truman by making his life a show for the whole world to see. The media is present in the life that they had made up for Truman itself. It is present in the way that his fake world is created, the orchestrated events in his life that push him into making certain decisions, and the ways that his world operates from day to day. Being able to see these forms of media actually bother me because of its hyper-real nature. It makes me wonder how much of our lives are actually there just because of media and its influence.
Representing the media’s side, in my opinion, is the movie Our Brand is Crisis. Here, Jane Bodine (Sandra Bullock) is a political strategist taking on another job for a politician running for president in Bolivia. In the run of the movie, she is convinced to come out of retirement to redeem herself with a bonus of going up against her old rival. She works in bringing up the votes for a politician using unethical methods such as framing crises and muddying the image of the rival politician. Her client politician eventually wins the presidential election but it turns up bad after she realizes that her candidate has agendas and ulterior motives that is not in the best interests of the mass.
The movie represents those people working for the media industry. These are the people who in turn create and influence media. The media portrayed here is practicing unethical ways of presenting media to the people and trying to turn in into their favor. An example of which is mudslinging the opposition, and framing events in the country that make their client seem capable and worthy of their votes. It shows how carefully planned the materials that are shown in media are before they are released to the people. It also proves how strong a force media is into shaping realities and beliefs of the society. In the movie, I admire her interview at the very start as she presents herself as a disillusioned media practitioner that knows the dark side of media all too well. Bodine shows that she is aware of how dirty the media can get, especially when mixed with politics which is under her field of expertise. As someone who might get involved in the same jobs myself, it struck a cord in me to be careful about media.
Personally, studying communication, I am actually glad that there are movies like that, those that present media in different ways. Media is not always good and fun. It has a tricky side that we should all be aware of. In both movies, there is a manipulation that alters reality or at least affects it enough to become true. There is a large possibility for me to work in media someday and I want to be aware of everything that is happening around me. I want the truth to be presented in media, not just things that are meant to affect us for the benefit of a few, not just for entertainment. There should be some meaningful but ethical use of media that allows it to be free but sustainable without the support of those with agendas. Like Jane Bodine, I want to be aware of the manipulative nature of media but not to the point of becoming as disillusioned as she has that I give into the system.
As an individual, away from being a student of communication, I think that the general public should be free to make informed decisions guided by the information presented in media but not so that they are subliminally controlled by what is presented in the media itself. We all have to be aware of what actually is. I understand that media is part of our world and cultures, but after watching these types of movies, you yourself might wonder: How much of the world is actually real?

Neverland Manila has been known to bring some of the best international acts here to the Philippines, and just this August they brought Zedd for his True Colors album tour!!!
The concert was on Saturday, August 8, at the SM Mall of Asia Arena. This was another treat from my boyfriend as we celebrated his birthday a little late (side note: It was your birthday, but thanks, babe!). I wasn’t really able to take a lot of pictures or videos because I might have been enjoying a little too much, but here are a few I managed in between enjoying the concert.

Belated Happy Twenteenth!
We were a little early and managed to be one of first people inside. When we were inside I got even more excited as the people who came to watch started to pour into the venue.
And it starts!
Once the visuals and music started to play, you could feel the buzz in the air as everyone started to cheer.
The Legend of Zelda - Zedd is known to be a TLZ fan, it wasn’t a surprise to hear him incorporated it into his work.

I know the pictures aren’t all that great. I didn’t bring a camera because I wanted to enjoy the actual concert and not bother any other people attending. That was a good call since some other concert goers had gigantic phones blocking the view. Some seemed like they had there phones up the whole time to record the concert (I really admire their arm strength though).We were actually closer than it looks, but we decided to move back as it got a little crazier. After all, you should go for the music.
The graphics and of course, the colors, were incredible. It made listening to the music and the entire vibe of the concert even more enjoyable. The lights and the graphics were visual candy that matched the music to the beat. I even saw one my best friends, Kathleen, in the upper box before the show started. Meanwhile, Marco and I had a great time with the jumping crowd down below. I wouldn’t have spent it with anyone else.
With all the craziness, awesome company, and the great music, the whole experience was really fun. It was even better than I expected it to be. I can’t wait for the next Neverland Manila event!
This one was an unplanned side trip while me and my boyfriend were going around SM Mall of Asia during August. We were actually killing time until going to the Zedd concert on the same night. We had at least 4 more hours to spare and we decided to check out the Exploreum to pass time. Yes, it’s yet another post about as museum type place.
It was relatively small, since it was just a feature inside a mall. However, it was still a good place to check out, especially since there were only a few people while we were looking around. Also, we only stayed for less than an hour because we planned to go around everywhere else and eat. It also had a lot of interactive pieces and cool models displayed. These are a few pictures we took while looking around.

They had a lot of round contraptions going on at the Exploreum, don’t they?
The first one is they Gyro ride where you get strapped in the middle and then you get to spin around like those cool machines shown in astronaut movies. I wanted to ride that one so bad but there wasn’t any personnel around to assist us. The second one was some sort of bike like the ones you see from Tron: Legacy, I don’t know if it actually works though. The third one is a fancied up bike that lights up a light bulb. I gt to watch Marco act like a guinea pig in a science experiment!
Marco, is that you? Sexy hahaha!

They even have a planetarium type auditorium inside. It’s called the Dome Theater!
Me and Weirdo
I remember back then, the site of the Exploreum wasn’t really called that before. I went there once back when I was in grade school I think and it was called the SM Science Discovery Center. It was really cool back then, it was like how you’d think of the Mind Museum today. It even had a part on the second floor where they would teach kids how to build robots, sadly that part is closed off and empty in the Exploreum today. I heard it just got renewed as of 2014, so I guess that would explain why it doesn’t seem to be at par with its predecessor yet. Still, it’s worth a look. The place is still nice with a lot of cool features like the X-ray Body Scanner, a grid that measures how fast you run compared to different animals, and scale models of different automotive technologies.
Philippines needs more places like these and if people continue to flock to them, they’ll have a better chance of improving your experience there when you visit!

Last June, I got a little “surprise” and got to visit The Mind Museum at Taguig! This post is actually really late, but it’s a shame not to share.
It’s absolutely amazing! The place isn’t just filled with stuff to look at, it actually has a lot of interactive features and installations that visitors can play with during their visit. It’s the type of educational museum where people would really enjoy instead of being bored to death like kids on some lame field trip.
Definitely a place worth going to with friends and family.
The trip was actually a surprise from my boyfriend for our 4th monthsary. He knows I love going to museums and places like these so he picked me up at home and drove us to Taguig! Thanks Weirdo!
