Elphaba and Glinda continue their royal tour of Munchkinland, complete with reminicent stories and (maybe) the start of discoverating some courage.

"Elphie, we need to follow him."

"He… hates me."

"No, he doesn't."

"Yes, he does. And I don't know why." But she did. Deep down, she believed she knew why.

"I wonder if Nessa will be here," Elphaba admitted. "Maybe I should've taken her up on her offer to introduce us at your party."

"That day was overwhelming enough as it was. An official introduction would've made you call it a night early." The blonde brushed her hand against her friend's.

"Not an official introduction. Meeting him as my great-grandfather."

She softened. "I know. But today will go perfectly according to plan. There's no need to worry."

Elphaba frowned. "What were we before? All this time, were we…"

"I owe you an apology," Glinda said softly, biting the inside of her cheek.

"It's alright, Poppyseed. Glinda will fix it."

Glinda will fix it. The blonde shot the Wizard's back a look of exasperation, fixing her face before it seeped into her tone. "I will do what I can, Your Ozness."

She scoffed. "I don't need your help. I am the Grand Sorceress of Oz." She banged the long wand against the floor.

The ground shook, knocking Elphaba off her feet. She fell to the floor with a thump, a loud yelp escaping her throat as her side collided with the carpet. "Glinda, what are you doing?"

She led her just outside the ballroom, away from the noise and prying eyes. "How are you feeling, Miss Upland?"

"Tired," Glinda admitted honestly. She let her façade drop a bit in the presence of her mentor. "It's strange, but getting your dreams seems a little complicated."

"Elphie?" Galinda whispered once the doors closed behind him.

The princess swallowed her last bit of scrambled eggs. "Yes?"

"I need to leave the palace."

He turned to the Ozians. "King Pastoria and his heir are dead!" he announced, holding the wand above his head. He didn't hear the cheers that followed. He was so tired. He had a headache, and not just from the explosion.

Against his better judgment, Oscar followed her in. Once inside, the sorceress shut and locked the door behind her, but her cloak remained on.

"The king has spies everywhere, so you must be very careful," Maurani said, magically lighting a lantern with a snap. "You can't trust anyone."

"Including you?"

She turned, her face calculating. "You can trust me as much as I trust you, and I already know that you have no real power."

Cringetober day 9: Niche interest

"PART 3: The Insight"

Oscar pushed himself up. Perhaps his head injury was more serious than he thought. He was sure he was going crazy, or was in a strange coma-induced fever dream. "Actually, I'm –"

"In Oz's darkest hour, there will come, from the heavens, a great wizard bearing the name of our land, who will have the power to read the Grimmerie and restore peace and unity to Oz," Melena insisted, clutching her sister's arm. "And here he is. Here to claim his throne and riches of gold."

"Throne and riches of gold?" Oscar blinked, now suddenly intrigued by this insanity. Now, there was a possibility of him being honored and praised. Something he had craved, yet lacked, his entire life.

Lurlinemas passed and turned into the new year. Galinda waited until the deadline to return the contract to the Wizard because she knew once she signed and handed it over, it would be official. Her heart was full of excitement, but her mind was filled with fear.

She couldn't find the Wizard in the throne room or his office, and was about to give up until dinner, when a moving shadow caught her eye. She turned and followed it down the hall. She peeked around the corner and froze. A few windows down, the Wizard was standing, looking out over the city with his hands clasped behind his back. She quickly approached him, but he didn't react to her heels, nor when her shadow crossed his path.
