WC: ~3.6K
A/N: Here's part four of Off the Record!! This is definitely the peak of the fic (which you'll find out why while reading đ) and the story is nearing probably at its midway point, but don't worry, there's at least 2-3 more chapters! I'm hoping this chapter is okay because I haven't had much time to proofread it (I'm very much a type-a personality and a perfectionist LOL) đ If you wanna be a part of my permanent taglist, you can comment here.

Monday morning arrives with a nervous excitement that settles in your stomach before you've even had your coffee. Today's the day. After weeks of editing, re-listening, trimming pauses without losing the conversation's natural rhythm, and making sure that every laugh, every thoughtful silence and every heartfelt answer remained intact, the episode with Michael is finally ready.
You arrive at the studio almost half an hour early. Liz arrives on time, holding two cups of coffee. "You beat me here," she says, setting the coffee down.
"I couldn't sleep."
"I figured. You know," Liz says, leaning against the doorway. "I don't think I've ever heard someone forget they're being interviewed."
You glance toward the screen. "He did."
"He did." She smiles. "And," she adds, "I don't think I've ever heard you laugh that much during an interview."
Your cheeks warm. "I was being professional."
"Sure."
"I was."
She laughs. "If that's what you wanna call it."
You roll your eyes, but you can't stop smiling. You walk over to the monitor where the finished episode is and you hover your finger over the mouse. One click. That's all it takes.
"You ready?" Liz asks.
You inhale slowly. "I think so."
"You've checked everything three times."
"I checked it four times actually."
"I know."
You laugh nervously, and click the mouse to upload the episode. For a split second, nothing happens: and then your computer begins chiming. One notification, followed by hundreds more. Multiple downloads, comments, emails and social media mentions come into Off The Record simultaneously.
Within ten minutes the episode has become the most-downloaded release your podcast has ever had. Liz clicks furiously on her keyboard and stares at the analytics, her eyes widening. "Holy shit."
You blink. "What?"
She looks up at you with a stunned look. "I think the internet loves it."
â
By the time lunch rolls around, entertainment websites are already quoting parts of the conversation, because for perhaps the first time in years, people were hearing Michael Jackson simply talk.
Fans comment that he sounded relaxed. Someone writes: "It feels like listening to two people just having a normal conversation."
Another says: "I've followed his career my whole life and I don't think I've ever heard him laugh this much."
You smile, because that has been your favorite part too. Suddenly, your office phone rings.
Liz answers. "Studio for Off The Record." She pauses as the person on the other end responds, then she looks toward you with raised eyebrows.
"It's for you."
You take the receiver. "Hello?"
"I listened." Michaelâs voice immediately makes your heart lift.
"You already listened?"
"Yes, I wanted to be one of the first people to hear it."
Your heart warms, and you can't help but smile. "So?"
"So..." You hear him laugh softly. "I forgot cameras weren't involved."
"There weren't any cameras."
"I know. I mean microphones."
You laugh. "I knew what you meant, I was just teasing you."
He laughs. "While I was listening, I kept thinking." He pauses. "My goodness...did I really talk that much?"
"You did."
"I'm sorry."
"Youâre apologizing for talking during a podcast?" You say, leaning back into your chair.
"I suppose that does sound silly."
"A little."
He laughs again. "I liked it."
"Me too, I liked hearing us." The words escape before you can think.
Thereâs a brief silence before he continues. "You said 'us,'" he says quietly.
Your heart skips. "I..."
"You did."
You cover your eyes with your free hand. "I wasn't thinking."
You can tell heâs smiling on the other end. "I'm glad."
"So am I."
"I've also been reading the comments," he admits.
"You said you didn't care what people thought of the episode."
"I lied."
You laugh.
"They're being kind." He says.
"They are."
"They're saying that I sounded peaceful." His voice grows thoughtful.
"You did."
"You think so?"
"I know so."
Silence settles comfortably between you.
"You know why?" you continue.
"Why?"
"Because you werenât performing."
Thereâs another pause, a bit longer this time. "I think you're right." He says.
â
After you talk with Michael for a bit, you settle back into the hustle of your work. The rest of the afternoon disappears beneath a mountain of emails, interview requests from companies such as Entertainment Tonight, congratulations from other podcast hosts and listeners thanking you for asking Michael different questions than everyone else.
A few hours later, you drive home back to your apartment. Once you unlock your door, you set your bag down, grab dinner and get comfortable: making sure that you take a long shower and put on your favourite pajamas. As you settle on to your couch with the book youâre currently reading, your apartment phone rings.
You get up and answer with a smile already forming. "Hello?"
"Guess what?"
You immediately laugh. "What?"
"I bought bread."
"Congratulations?"
"No, listen."
"Okay, I'm listening."
"I made toast." He says proudly.
You tilt your head, confused. "You made toast."
"I didn't burn it."
You smile, remembering your conversation. "You sound incredibly proud."
"I am."
"Well you have achieved something remarkable."
"I have."
You shake your head, laughing.
"I don't know why you're teasing me."
"Because it's fun."
"I worked very hard on that toast."
"I'm sure you did."
"It even popped up at the right time."
You laugh so hard you have to sit down. "You are impossible."
"I've heard that before."
"You've definitely heard it from me."
"I have."
The conversation stretches into another couple of hours as the both of you talk about anything and everything under the sun.
"You know..." he says after a while, his voice growing soft.
"Hm?"
"I miss you."
Your heart begins beating faster as you contemplate your words. "I saw you a couple of days ago."
"I know, but it still feels like a long time."
You smile to yourself. "It does."
"When can I see you again?"
You glance toward your calendar on your wall. "Saturday?"
"I can do Saturday."
"What would you like to do?" You ask him.
"Hmm..." You hear him thinking. "What if..."
"What?"
"What if we didn't plan very much?"
You laugh. "Just exist?"
"Exactly."
"I think I'd like that."
"So would I."
â
By Friday afternoon, the podcast has become the biggest episode your show has ever released.
Liz walks into your office carrying printed statistics and places it on your desk. "You might want to sit down for this."
You go to sit down, take one look at the numbers and gasp. "You're joking."
"Not one bit."
The downloads are almost double your previous record. Messages continue pouring in, radio stations continue to request replay excerpts, while journalists want interviews with you about the interview.
You lean back in your chair, overwhelmed. "I didn't expect this."
Liz smiles. "I did."
"You did not."
"I expected people to love the conversation." She points toward your computer screen. "They weren't listening because he was famous though."
"No?"
"They listened because the two of you sounded real.â She says.
You find yourself smiling, because that had been your goal all along.
â
Saturday arrives far more quickly than expected. You spend way too much time deciding what to wear again. You go and stand in front of your mirror, then you sigh. "This is becoming a pattern." You say to yourself.
Eventually you settle on a cream blouse tucked into a light blue skirt, comfortable enough for walking but just nice enough to make you feel confident. As you fasten a pair of silver earrings, your landline rings.
You answer immediately. "Hello?"
"Hi." His voice carries that familiar smile you've already come to recognize. "I'm outside."
Your heart flutters. "You are?"
"I've been here almost two minutes."
"You didn't call sooner?"
"I didn't want to rush you."
You smile. Michael Jackson, forever considerate. "I'll be right down."
As you hang up, you catch your own reflection one last time and finish any last minute touch-ups. You grab your purse and lock your apartment door. You head outside, letting the warm summer air greet you the moment you step out. Michael is leaning casually against his car, hands tucked into the pockets of a light jacket despite the warmth of the afternoon and his signature sunglasses perched on his nose. At the sound of the apartment building door opening, he looks up and smiles: the kind of smile that begins in his eyes before it reaches the rest of his face.
"There you are."
"I was beginning to think you'd driven away." You tease him.
"I considered it."
You raise an eyebrow.
"I got nervous." He laughs, raising his hands in mock defence.
You laugh along with him as you walk closer. "You've already admitted that once."
"I know."
"I thought we'd conquered it."
"So did I." His grin widens. "Turns out I just keep finding new reasons."
You stop a comfortable distance in front of him. For a second, neither of you says anything.
He looks at you with quiet admiration, taking in your outfit before meeting your eyes again. "You look..." He pauses, searching.
"What?"
"I don't think I know the right word."
"Try anyway."
He smiles sheepishly. "Lovely."
Heat rises to your cheeks. "Thank you."
"You always make blue look like it belongs to you."
You laugh softly. "I think that's the nicest compliment anyone's ever given me."
"It was the first thing I thought. By the way," He says, opening the passenger door and grabbing something. "These are for you."
Instead of a single flower this time, he holds out a small bundle of wildflowers tied together with a blue ribbon. "I picked these this morning."
"You picked them?"
"Yeah.â He admits, rubbing the back of his neck.
You accept them carefully, a wide smile forming on your lips. "They're beautiful. Thank you, Michael."
âThey're beautiful just like you.â He says, smiling.
Your blush deepens and you know youâre in for an interesting afternoon if he keeps up with the flirting.
âShall we?â He asks, extending his arm to you. You giggle. âYouâre such a gentleman.â
As you take his arm, he smiles. âI like to think I am.â
â
The two of you end up back at Neverland, but this time you walk around the theme park.
"I like this better," you admit as you stroll beneath an archway covered in climbing roses.
"Better than having an itinerary?"
"Much better."
"I agree." He walks beside you at an easy pace, his hand brushing along yours.
You blush and turn to him. "Y'know, if you want to hold my hand you can."
His cheeks turn pink. "I um...I didn't want to assume you wanted me to."
"You can, I don't mind."
He smiles as he slips his hand into yours. His thumb brushes lightly across the back of your hand, causing a shiver to go up your spine. The afternoon slips by almost unnoticed as you both continue to walk and talk throughout the Neverland theme park grounds, stopping occasionally when Michael insisted you get a snow-cone or when he points out his favourite rides. After a while, you both stop to sit on a bench that overlooks many of the rides. For a moment, you both sit there, holding hands.
"You know," he says after a while, "I've been thinking about something."
"Should I be worried?"
He hesitates. "Probably not."
"You hesitated."
"I always hesitate."
"Your pause."
"My pause."
You smile. "What have you been thinking about?"
"The podcast."
"What about it?"
"I realized that I don't remember answering questions" He looks ahead, watching a butterfly drift across the path.
You tilt your head.
"I remember talking to you."
The simplicity of the sentence makes your heart ache in the gentlest way. "I remember that too. You know what's funny?" you ask.
"What?"
"When I first started interviewing people, I thought my job was getting answers."
"And now?"
"Now I think it's helping people feel comfortable enough to forget they're being interviewed."
He nods thoughtfully. "I think you're very good at that."
"You helped."
"I did?"
"You trusted me."
He smiles. "I suppose I did."
After a while, he looks down at you. "I've never been very good at this," he says.
"What?"
"Letting someone know me."
You turn toward him.
"I've spent so much of my life introducing people to versions of myself." He laughs softly. "I don't think I've introduced anyone to me in a very long time."
You listen to him intently, letting him continue.
"And somehow, with you, I stopped trying." He smiles to himself.
You gently squeeze his hand. "I noticed."
He looks down at your hands. "You did?"
"Mhm."
"Were you disappointed?"
"No, I was honoured."
His fingers slowly curl around yours, just enough to say he doesn't want to let go.
"I've been thinking too and I've realized something." You admit.
"What?"
"I look forward to telling you things."
His expression softens.
"The little things." You continue.
"Like?"
"I'll hear a song and think 'Michael would like this'." You smile.
He laughs quietly. "I do the same thing."
"You do?"
"I'll see something ridiculous and think," He points toward you. "'I have to tell her'."
Your smile grows. "That's become my favourite part of the day, whenever you call and tell me things."
"Mine too."
Without thinking, you lean slightly toward him and of course he notices. "I don't know what's happening to me," he admits with a quiet laugh.
"I think I do."
"You do?"
"I think you're becoming important to me." You say, glancing down at your joined hands.
He grows very still. After a long moment, he whispers, "I was hoping you'd say that."
You look up.
"I was hoping it was true for you too." He continues.
"It is."
He doesn't hesitate this time. "It really is."
The world seems to grow quieter around you, and in the moment there's only the two of you. He studies your face for a long moment. "I keep wondering if I'm allowed to do something."
You smile. "What's that?"
He laughs nervously. "I don't know if I should say it."
"You can tell me."
"I'd like to kiss you."
Your heartbeat stumbles.
"But only if you'd like that too." His voice is barely above a whisper.
Your smile is immediate. "I've been wondering when you were going to ask."
His eyes widen just enough to make you laugh. "You have?"
"For at least ten minutes."
"Only ten?"
"Alright, maybe twenty or more."
He laughs, relief washing across his face. "I've been trying to talk myself into asking."
"I'm glad you did."
"So..."
"So..."
He smiles. "May I?"
Instead of answering with words, you slowly close the small distance between you, giving him every chance to stop if he'd changed his mind.
He doesn't. His free hand rises gently, brushing a loose strand of hair away from your face before resting lightly against your cheek. His touch is warm and careful, as though you're something precious. When your foreheads meet first, both of you smile.
"So, this is really happening," he murmurs.
"It is."
He searches your eyes one last time, finding only warmth there. Then, ever so gently, he kisses you. It's soft and unhurried, filled with tenderness rather than urgency. As he pulls you closer, you can feel his heartbeat - and the rhythm matches yours. When you finally pull back, neither of you move very far and you're both smiling.
"Hi," he says quietly.
You laugh. "Hi."
"I've wanted to do that for a while."
"I could tell."
"My pause gave me away?"
"It always does."
He shakes his head, laughing. "I'll never live that down."
"No." You smile, lacing your fingers through his again. "I hope you don't."
The silence that follows settles around you both and there's no urgency to fill it. You stay wrapped in each other's company, your thumb absentmindedly tracing circles over the back of his hand while he watches you with that soft, unreadable smile. Every so often your eyes meet, and each time the air between you seems to grow a little heavier, charged with something neither of you dares to name aloud.
Eventually, he shifts closer until your knees brush. His gaze flicks from your eyes to your lips, searching for hesitation. Finding none, he cups your cheek with gentle fingers before leaning in once more and kisses you again, harder this time. As his hands curl around your waist and he deepens the kiss, a moan escapes your mouth. You freeze for a moment while Michael chuckles, breaking the kiss. "You seem to enjoy this honey." He says, his eyes full of adoration.
You blush at his comment, especially the new nickname. "I, um...well maybe a little." You say, flustered.
He smiles. ""We could...continue this inside, if that's what you want and if you're comfortable."
"Wow, you've gotten quite bold Mr. Jackson." You reply, smiling.
"I suppose so. So...is that a yes?"
Your heart is pounding so loudly you're certain that he can hear it. Your gut instinct tells you this is a turning point: but not because of what might happen next, but because of who it's with. This is too important, you care about Michael so much and you want this to be perfect.
Michael doesn't rush you. He simply waits, his hand still in yours, giving you every chance to say no. His patience helps you give him an answer.
"Yes."
A grin spreads across his face. "Then we'd better get inside," he says, standing up with your hand still in his.
You giggle as you both walk towards his mansion. Before opening the door, Michael pauses, glancing back at you with the same tenderness that has been there from the beginning.
"You know.," he murmurs, brushing a loose strand of hair behind your ear, "you're incredible."
Heat rises to your cheeks and you laugh softly. "Michael, if you keep saying things like that, I'm going to start believing you."
"I hope you do."
Michael moves closer to you and presses one lingering kiss to your forehead, another to your lips, and then opens the door, guiding you inside. He guides you upstairs and clicks the door shut, then his lips finds yours again.
Whatever comes next would belong only to the two of you: a quiet continuation of the trust, affection and anticipation that has been growing between the both of you for weeks.

A/N: I FEEL BAD FOR LEAVING Y'ALL ON A BIT OF A CLIFFHANGER BUT I PROMISEEEE YOU'LL LOVE PART FIVE WHEN IT COMES OUT <3 I'll likely drop snippets while I'm away hehe đ also I want to point out that any side characters (i.e., Frank [who's now gone from the story] and Liz) are merely there so that the story flows and it's not just Michael and Y/N, but they're not important to the overall story! Also, we will get to the next podcast episode between Michael and Y/N, but it'll be much different from the first one (since their romance is progressing) đ thank you for reading pookies!
