Thank you for sending this to me, anon! I thought I would combine this in one post so it can be found and shared more easily. What can I say? ITV understood nothing. It’s like Fellowes, the producer, the channel and their DA marketing apartment are of the same mind. Disturbing.

WARNING: ITV’s response might cause sudden bounds of nausea, furniture throwing and spontaneous implosion.

I complained to ITV about the lack of warning for the scene of Thomas in the bath full of blood. This is their reply (sorry its long but I thought you’d appreciate it)

“Thank you for your recent email regarding Downton Abbey. Across every series of Downton Abbey and amongst the drama, romance and comedy, the show has always included shocking and surprising story lines. It is the unpredictability of these moments that have contributed to the enjoyment of the show.

The scene you refer to was, as you appreciate, brief and not graphic. Had there been more of a build up, or follow on, to a ‘depression storyline’ we may have responded differently. This is what we have done recently in Coronation Street where the character Steve MacDonald suffered from the condition where we offered a helpline.  However, within the story Thomas is offered support of a kind appropriate for the period.

We are very sorry the scene distressed you and we apologise for that as it is ever our intention to offend. Your views will be forwarded on to the producers so they stay informed regarding this subject. Thank you for taking the time to write… blah blah blah.”
