This is Bradly Earl Walker. He is 44 years old and if you ask him how he is, he will always answer with "Dying Slowly" but that is because he was diagnosed with a very rare progressive neurological disease known as ALSP or Adult-onset Leukoencephalopathy with axonal Spheroids, or HDLS Hereditary Diffuse Leukodystrophy with axonal Spheroids. Before his diagnosis in 2009 he was a goofy, paintball playin dude, working in construction and livin in North Carolina with his parents, twin brother and his family. In 2006 he got married and that is when things started to change. He started having panic and anxiety attacks, he came home after installing plumbing, heating and air at clients' homes but immediately went back because he felt he didn't trust his own skills anymore. His demeanor changed and according to his wife "became an asshole" and that is how she knew something was wrong. What ALSP does essentially, it "causes brain tissue known as white matter to waste away (leukodystrophy), forming lesions in certain brain areas due to disease-causing variants in the colony-stimulating factor-1 receptor gene". Or in layman's terms, his brain is deteriorating. It has affected his speech, his cognition, his short-term memory, his personality.. things that we don't think about doing like holding a spoon, going to the bathroom are some of the things he needs assistance with and he has now developed dementia. Hangin out with the guy for a few weeks, I have noticed it is kind of like hanging with a little kid that doesn't talk very much. He knows what he wants and what he wants to say but he just cannot get the words out. You see he tries and you can see it frustrates him. The thing about ALSP, is that people who have been diagnosed.. didn't live very long. Bradly Earl has lived 16 years and a few months "Dying Slowly" as he puts it. I told him he is a fighter and he told me that he is tired of fighting. I can see the goofball kid he used to be and sometimes I see that "asshole" side too and I can see how hard it has been on his family and especially his wife.
