[oculus was out drinking again. Took a crawl for almost a whole block before deciding that the shaking in his legs was to the point that he needed to go home before it got worse.]
[he slid down to the elevator floor on the way up, repeatedly tapping his head against the wall sluggishly. He started crying some time during bar 3, he estimates, and it was painfully obvious it would be starting again the second he found his room again.]
[he tried to stand up to get out of the elevator once the door opened, but fell to the floor again. Dorian found him after maybe a minute of Oculus having been there, lying facedown to cry a little.]
- @its-a-movement
"Gray?"
[Dorian asked, a bit surprised as he ran to oculus' side, trying to help him up only for oculus to collapse on top of him]
… papa?
[he leaned into Dorian. His hair is all messed up and his tie is just… gone. He sniffles a little to try to stop crying around who he thinks is Vox.]
"..no, I'm not Vincent"
[Dorian whispered, tilting oculus' head up enough for him to see his face]
… ohhhh… close enoughh…
[he smiles at Dorian, though the second he gets his head out of Dorian’s hands, he buries it again to hide his tears.]
You’re llike a dad to mme anywayys…
"how about we get you out of this elevator?"
[Dorian asked, helping oculus to stand up, stumbling a bit when oculus leaned his full body weight against him]
Ookay…
[he murmurs a soft “im sorry” when Dorian stumbles.]
I rememmber you carrying mme when I was ittyy bittyy… whered you go aafter the accident anywayss…?
"I uh, I moved away. Couldn't deal with it anymore"
[Dorian explained simply, guiding oculus out of the elevator]
… yyou could’ve stayyed with uss… we alll knowwe needed it…
[he stumbles, but he tries to at least keep himself somewhat upright.]
[Dorian caught him easily, holding him upright]
"I just.. couldn't bare to live there anymore. Sorry, gray"
[he nestled his face into Dorian, still crying a little.]
It’s- itsokayy… i thought for awhiile that yyou died with everyyone else- and- mmomma had totell mme you just… moved away…
… ithink i was mmad yyou left for awhile too.
"I can understand why.. I would be mad at me too"
Nno- don’t do that- dad- i wasa dumb kid-
[he cries a little more into Dorian’s shoulder.]
aand i missed you- mmore thanthe anger-
"I missed you too, gray.. I just.. I thought you had died with everyone else.."
Oh-
[its a little broken sound- accompanied by more tears seeping through Dorian’s shirt.]
I- ii looked ffor yyou- inthe hospital inn case you visited- everyysingleday-
[he doesn’t try to talk after that, just sobs quietly into Dorian. There’s the occasional “im sorry,” mixed in.]
[Dorian holds Oculus close, whispering occasional "it's okay" or "it's alright"]
Ggod, iimsoo pathetic when imdrunk-
[he sniffles and tries to stop the tears.]
Why am i like this, Dorian?
Why am I such a shitty person?…
"You're not a shitty person..." [Dorian reassured him] "I promise.."
No- nno I aaaamm-
[he wipes his eyes.]

"gray, we're in hell" [Dorian reminded him] everyone here is terrible"
You’re not.
[he fiddles with Dorian’s hair sluggishly. He tries to be as gentle as he can considering how out of it he is.]
… howwlong were yyou alone?..
"Only a few years" [Dorian reassured him] "I started to work in crystal mines"
… iif i hadtried tto find yyou before ii died- wwould i have mmissed you?
[he’s quieter now, voice softer. He still smells of cheap liquor and sadness.]
"Gray, it's alright.. I wasn't mad at you at all"
iif id ttrieda little harderr iiknow you’dve livedlonger- and-
[he nestles in again.]
wwouldyou have diedbefore i eveen gotthere, dadd?
"Gray, I slipped.. it's not your fault I died"
ii- iknowthat- but… ijust- iwish iicoulldve sseen youagain before-
[he goes quiet. Sniffles again.]
can i stay the night with you tonight, dad?
[he says it the way he used to back when he was barely over eight- a little sad, a little scared, quietly.]
"of course you can.. you never needed to ask" [Dorian told him softly, gently ruffling his hair like he used to]
[He smiles softly. He’s pulls his head pack so Dorian can see it. His face is- well- messy, to say the least. His eyes were red and puffy from crying- and who knows what else- and his nose was red from rubbing it.]
thankyou.

[he doesn’t try to talk after that, just sobs quietly into Dorian. There’s the occasional “im sorry,” mixed in.]

[There had been news across Hell that a little girl had arrived. She was what, 13? 14? Far too young to be in hell. And there were more news that came with it:
Alastor had adopted her.
Now, of course this was a shock. Everyone was surprised by this - Vox included. However, Maris worked/stayed at the hotel, so of course-. . .
Of course the little girl had fallen right into Oculus's hands, as Alastor didn't want her to be left alone to wander hell, and Maris needed to run some errands.
She sat on the floor of Maris' room, sewing a tear in a dress with shakey hands. The sound of the door startled her, and she turned quickly.]
@intourhandsicommendmyspirit
So he took you in, huh?
[he scanned her for a moment- trying to see if there was anything to clue him in on why she was here so young. He sighed, going over to the corner of the bed and sitting down.]
Can’t say I’m surprised, though. Im sure you know as well as I do that he’s only doing it for power.
[he looked at her hands- the shaking- getting up before sitting down on the floor this time. He let himself drop his act a bit.]
Let me help with that, okay? She taught me to sew- eh- maris, I mean.
Oh-
Um- okay, if you want to, I guess-
[Shifted to hand him the needle first, then the dress. It was clear that Alastor had at least picked out her outfit, or at least in the clothing that made it up; a basic dress with a sweater over top. She didn't know who she was; of course Alastor would keep her away from TVs.
She stared at him for a moment more. Despite litterally being in Hell, she was still childlike - especially in her eyes, in her gaze.]
Do you have a style that isn’t his?
[he took the dress from her. He took a few seconds to look over the tear before beginning to work on it. He tried to stay a little intimidating, just in case anyone happened to come in during their time, but for the most part he tried to be down on her level.]
Why are you staring at me like that? I don’t even know what you want. You’re not going to get it by staring at me, either.
[he never knew how to handle children- Maris could likely attest to it- and pushing them away was the best option he had, to his knowledge.]
. . . Papa told me to study people, that it would be helpful here.
[She spoke rather quietly, a bit shy. If anything, half her time here had already been spent hiding behind the nearest adult. Her gaze didn't waver, though, except to flick down to him sewing.]
. . . You're way better at that then me, I could hardly get the thread through the needle.
Give it time, I’ve had the last fifty years to practice. You’ve only been alive for, what, ten? But, you do have the best teacher you could ask for.
[he chuckles. He pauses sewing for a moment.]
Though, as much as I hate to admit it, your papa is a smart man. He’s right, studying people is a skill I have to use down here a lot.
[he resumes sewing, sighing. Mentions of Alastor always made him mad. His own papa made sure of that.]
Thirteen.
. . . Why ? What do you do?
[She tilted her head, her gaze turned hesitant. It was unclear what Alastor has told her so far, and what she knew of this...world.]
News and television. If it’s got a screen, I’ve been on it.
[he finishes sewing, tying a few knots in the string to get it to hold before motioning for scissors.]
Alastor won’t let you near screens, though. Even I know that.
Oh.
[She picked up the scissors, handing them to him rather carefully.]
He doesn't like them, he told me. They aren't good for me since I'm growing-. .
He’s afraid of competition, that’s what. He’s just mad that Voxtek has better entertainment than his shitty, washed up radio show.
[he takes the scissors, snipping the thread before sitting them down between him and scarlet.]
How’d it get torn anyways?
I think-. . I think the radio is okay-. .
. . . It- it was before, that was the dress I came here in. It torn before-. .before I was here. Yes.
Televisions better, you should give my talk show a watch sometime.
Oh. Well, that's a shame. It's a nice dress... does it have any other tears?
[She shook her head no.]
Papa would never let me. I'm not allowed near the TVs, like I said.
Oh- Maris never told me your name-?
Oculus, but if your papa asks, it’s Stephen. He doesn’t need to know that I stepped foot here.
[he sighs.]
I would allow you around them. Don’t they sound fun? At the very least, they’re better than radio.
[She shrugged.]
We weren't allowed a TV before I died. My un-. One of my family members did it though, TV. I don't remember what. He said it was for grown ups.
Hm. Maybe it’s best you didn’t get to watch TV then.
[he has a gut feeling about her uncle. Something was off, he figured, but he didn’t press further.]
Not all television is like that though. I made a couple of kids programs back in my day.
[She shrugged again.]
I dunno. Papa said no, and-. . I don't want him to be angry.
Oh! I didn't introduce myself. I'm Scarlet.
Well, Scarlet, sometimes papas can be wrong. He was wrong about my papa, you know. Hell, even my papa was wrong about my potential.
[he chuckles.]
But you don’t need to worry about that.
But-. . .
But he said he'd teach me everything. He can't be wrong, he wouldn't be a good teacher, and Maris says Papa is very smart-
[he tsks at her disapprovingly, shaking his head and frowning.]
Scarlet… oh, scarlet, people can lie and be just as smart as they were before. I’m not stupid and I’ve lied plenty of times.
But-
But why would he lie? To me?
[She frowned at him.]
Adults have their reasons. Not that I claim to know them.
[he sighs dramatically. It is obviously faked.]
But, if I had to guess, I’d assume it was for power. He’s always wanting more deals and more souls. I wouldn’t put it above him to manipulate a child for that. A crying shame, too, since you’re so nice.
[She tilted her head at him - honestly rather confused. She didn't quite understand.]
I don't-. . . understand. But I'm not- I'm not important, or anything-. .
A child in hell is important. You’re an easy target for him to sink his teeth into. I knew he was a piece of shit, but I never thought he’d sink this low.
[he chuckles and ruffles her hair.]
But, that’s the good thing about me being your friend, right? I can call it as I see it.
We are friends, aren’t we, scarlet?
[She flinched away from him - very skittish about him raising his hand, but she didn't really have anywhere to go. He'd begun to remind her of her uncle. She didn't respond verbally - just a nod.]
. . . Do- do you know when Maris will be back?
I don’t, unfortunately. A shame, though, I’d love to chat with her.
[he gets up, stretching. His back faintly pops and he winces.]
I need a favor from you. Since we’re friends and all, it shouldn’t be much trouble, right?
. . .
What-. .what favor?
[She seemed a bit more timid now - bordering on nervous.]
Your soul. I want it.
[he says it so naturally, as if he’d done this many times before.]
Either way, somebody is bound to own it eventually. Alastor would’ve gone after it, and pretty much every other overlord wants their it too.
[he crouches to her level, sticking out a hand. He was too happy about this- as if he was trying to make it sound decent.]
Think of it as a blessing, that I’d be the one to have it. Everyone else is just unpredictable.
[She flinched at his hand again - taking a scoot back.]
Papa said-. . . not to give anyone anything, unless he was there, or even Maris, and- and he's not here and Maris isn't here-
[She frowned at him. She didn't like this one bit. The way she was sitting, she shifted to be sitting on her hands.]
Scarlet, scarlet, scarlet… someone was going to make a deal eventually, regardless of your papas wishes.
[he chuckles. It’s sounds wrong now.]
I don’t think you understand who you’re talking to. Scarlet, souls are very important to me. Prized, even. Do you think I’d treat it like any asshole on the street?
. . . . Maris or Papa isn't here. We could- we could wait, until Maris gets back-?
I don't want Papa to get mad at me for not listening. That'd be bad. Really bad.
Scarlet. It’s just one handshake. Plus, I already know Maris would approve because I’m her son.
[he moves his hand closer to her insistently.]
And if you’re worried about him, well, I’d be more than happy to defend you.
Well- well you said, earlier, that it would be better if he didn't know you were here. So why- why would you go see him and "defend" me if he shouldn't know you're here?
And- and I wanna hear Maris say it.
Because then I’d have leverage. It’s not safe for me if he knows just yet, but if you just shake my hand, I’ll be safe to keep being your friend. Wouldn’t you like that?
[he entirely ignores the mention of Maris.]
. . . . Nuh-uh. I want Maris.
I wanna listen to Papa. Nuh uh.
Scarlet. Please. It’s just one favor, is it not? I can even give it back to you later if you want it. Nobody will even have to know anything happened in terms of deals here, right?
But- but what if Papa wants it? Then I can't give it to him. Then he'll have to come get you.
And I still want Maris.
If your papa wants it, that’s his own problem. He should have tried to get it sooner.
You can get her afterwards. I won’t stay for much longer, and I don’t want to have to call my papa to let him know I’ll be late for a meeting because some child decided that I wasn’t worth her time.
I don't want to give you anything without Maris.
[Her tone changed drastically - almost like a cornered animal beginning to get loud to try to scare off danger.]
I'm not going to without her.
[he tilts his head like a confused dog, unused to not getting what he wants. It’s one thing that changed about him when he got to hell- he got used to a world where he always got his way.]
[so he improvises. He goes to the door, quietly locks it, and stands in front of it. He stares at her for a moment, shaking his head in dissatisfaction.]
I’m not moving an inch until you change your mind, little lady.
No.
No. No no noNo No no No No No.
No. No. No.
[She definitely seemed more like a frightened animal now - she skittered her way into a corner, bringing the discarded scissors with her, curling in on herself and clutching the scissors.]
When I said I wasn’t going to move an inch, I meant that, kid. I’m not coming towards you, so why are you so afraid?
[the most he does is crouch down again. He thinks it makes him look less intimidating- it doesn’t.]
nonononononononono
No don't do that.
Don't. Do. That.
[She kept the scissors clutched to herself.]
… okay then.
[he shifts to sit down on the floor.]
Only because you asked so nicely.
…
Telling people to do shit with that tone is unbecoming of a little lady such as yourself, you know.
Unlock. Unlock. Unlock door.
[Her voice has a little bit of a static to it now - not as strong as Alastors. More jittery, like a radio loosing connection.]
[he has the audacity to chuckle at her- to smile, even.]
Not with that tone, little lady. Ask a little nicer, will you?
[he rolls his eyes at her, getting closer to the door.]
Unlock. Unlock. Unlock.
[The static seems to grow - she gets a bit of a green tint around her. Very Alastor. She also stumbles to her feet, still holding the scissors.]
Unlock.
Woah there, little lady. I might not look like it, but I’ve had to deal with plenty of kids holding scissors, and I know pretty well that you should put them down before somebody gets really hurt.
[he talks to her in the tone you’d talk to a five year old who just said “shit” without knowing it was bad.]
Unlock the door.
Unlock it.
[her hands shook despite how she was clutching the scissors.]
Look, I know you’re scared, but until you agree to the deal, I’m not going to.
So stop asking. You’re being a brat about this, you know?
[he just stares at her in disapproval.]
. . .
[Her whole being seemed to just - shift. It was unsettling; there was a sudden calm, almost.]
Unlock. The door.
Right now.
Not happening, little lady.
[he doesn’t notice. He’s never taken a child for someone he needs to study as closely. Children usually show their emotions, he thought.]
Put the scissors down, and then we’ll talk. Okay?
[The corner she put herself in is next to a dresser. She sets them down on the dresser next to her.]
Unlock. Door.
What do I get out of unlocking the door for you, Scarlet?
[he watches her carefully, to make sure she doesn’t grab the scissors again.]
. . . .
I'm hungry.
[She states it plainly - but there's clearly something off about her. Her eyes almost look distant, like she's seeing through him.]
Does Maris not still keep snacks in her drawers? Or was that only for me?
[he doesn’t like that look in her eyes. He’s never felt intimidated by a child, so he pretends not to be afraid of her.]
Stop looking at me like that.
Papa gives me snacks.
I like Papa's snacks.
Unlock the door.
I said “we’ll talk,” not “I’ll unlock the door for you.”
[he groans in frustration.]
Your papa isn’t here to give you snacks. If he was here, he’d have stopped me before I even got into this hotel.
You have snacks.
[Her eyes have sort of glazed over now.]
Unlock the door.
I’m not going to unlock the door, how many times do I have to say that to you?
[he’s getting visibly annoyed at her, having the occasional eye twitch and scowling.]
[She took a step forward.
Not so timid. Not very scared.]
Hungry.
[Her eyes are glazed over.]
I get it now, okay? Check her top drawer, she probably has something for you.
[he stands only to be more intimidating to her.]
Just stop being a whiny bitch and be quiet for a minute if you’re not going to listen to me!
[She takes another step forward; almost like a cat stalking a mouse.]
. . . . I don't want her snacks.
I want Papa's snacks.
You’re not getting his fucking snacks!
[he takes a step forward to get closer to her out of pure anger.]
You’ve done nothing but whine about your papa the whole damn time I’ve been here rather than listen to me!
